My place to come to when I need upliftment, joy, even tears - always a treat, always the very best. Thank You (and to see my now absent friend at the oboe!)
Bach arranged this piece based on a hymn by a German hymn writer Joachim Neander. The hymn in English is called Praise to the Lord Almighty. You will hear the theme came our quite clear at the last movement. Sadly not a lot of churches in India sing this song, even in the Baptist North East hardly anybody knows this song, except may be at more sophisticated institution like Patkai Christian College.
Thank you Netherlands for these stupendous performances. Every single one a priceless gem to be cherished and conteplated. Thank you for keeping the incomparable Bach alive for us all. A fecund man of brilliance bursting with musical genius. I listen to your superlative performances whenever I can. Keep up the tremendous work. You give us mortals your immortality!
For me this is one of his most approachable cantatas. We know the Chorale, and to hear five settings of it, all beautiful, some very ingenious, is sheer delight. Lovely Miriam Feuersinger gives another performance to treasure.
Apart from the sublime performance by all the artists, and the perfectly recorded sound track I find that the video is the icing of the cake. Always spot-on. Just look at the facial expression of the cellist Lucia Swarts and Dijkstra at the end of the alto aria from 6:49 and the following 10 seconds. Wonderful!
Absolutely nuts. Imagine what went through peoples minds when they heard this, although this type of music had been around a while still. but never to the unapologetic level of Bach.
The second movement was transcribed by Bach himself for the collection of organ chorales called the Schubler Chorales. Bach was a prolific transcriber of his own works. See how many times he transcribed the fabulous Preludium for violin in E major = Sinfonia of Cantata No. 29 "Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir"

Vocally instrumentally and in terms of counterpoint this cantata is remarkable. The Alto aria with the violIn in particular. The duet that follows is a testament to Bach's skills at counterpoint. The next movement has a tenor with cello and a trumpet playing the chorale melody.
