- Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
Your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say.
Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are
But not too wise
For down below they never grow
They're always tired and charms are hired
From out of their eyes
Never surprise.
Take your time and you'll be fine
And say a prayer for people there
Who live on the floor
And if you see what's meant to be
Don't name the day or try to say
It happened before.
Don't be shy you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done
If only you see
Just what you are beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day
In autumn for free
Yes, be what you'll be.
Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
Your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say.
Open up the broken cup
Let goodly sin and sunshine in
Yes that's today.
And open wide the hymns you hide
You find reknown while people frown
At things that you say
But say what you'll say
About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people round your head
Who say everything's been said
And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain. - เพลง
This was how I found out about Nick Drake, and i'll be eternally grateful to Mars Volta for introducing me to him.
I knew all Nick Drake's songs before discovering this cover by The Mars Volta, featuring John Frusciante on acoustic guitar. I usually dislike Nick Drake's covers but this one is great, respecting the original mood and style and adding some ethereal singing and effects. Great cover!
me too :)
Me too!!!
My respect to The Mars Volta for covering such a tremendous forgotten poet.
This version is so strange-beautiful. They found a way to remain original even as they, basically, do the same song, same guitar . This one grows on me slowly..
I don’t understand how I’m only discovering this in 2023.
has anyone noticed john frusciante on acoustic guitar...funny how can you recognise him only by one, two, three, four in the beggining :D
Damn, I came from my smile is a rifle thinking the same thing.
unfortunately that pretty much happens cause he has no teeth of his own due to drug abuse
@@nunomartins4265 What so he can't talk now because of his dentures? Some of us just know his voice man but you go right ahead relating everything about him back to his drug abuse in the 1990s if that makes you feel better. Nearly got through one small comment section without someone feeling the need to bring that up but no.
For those that not like the “radio frequency” this represent the darkness behind the normal voice, like things behind the sun.
It may be, doesn't mean I enjoy it
But then I don't have to enjoy it to like it
But this, neh
There may be more symbolism in terms of sound, but I don't think that necessarily enhances it
Desde 2010 buscaba esta cancion en esta version que alguna vez la escuche en la radio.
My favorite cover of all time. Nick Drake is a gift...so is Volta.
I just looked up lyrics to Things Behind The Sun so I could practice it for a cover I'm planning to do of the entire Pink Moon album in one take, and stumbled across the Mars Volta lyrics, so now I'm here. Not quite the same feeling as Nick, they voltafied it, but it's still eerily haunting. And frusciante played acoustic on this?? Crazy, how someone with such little music inspired some of the greatest musicians we know today
Did you ever finish this cover?
@@mytemporallobeisshapedlike1796 still in my books to be recorded, haven't gotten the practice in
Great cover! Great band! Great Nick's song!
Man, they really do a great job on this one. Miss TMV.
Good news
Hermoso cover.
such a beautiful song. i wish i would of known about it sooner. needs more plays.
this is awesome love mars volta jeh!!!
Best cover ever
this grew majorly on me
@RolandofGilead541 You know who else is a gift? :D John Frusciante. Him, the RHCP and The Mars Volta I owe my inspiration to. Awesome musicians. :D
Agreed!
Where does anyone find time in their life to hate The Mars Volta? Forget personal taste and everything, the fact is they are probably the greatest band on the planet right now. Every album is completely different to the others, and every album is a 9/10 at least. Love this song, love this version, still love Nick Drake. Open your eyes.
No dude
@@eightytwo8282 YES
That is an opinion
1000% true
They are the greatest band of all time, and that's a fact. ⚡⚡
mmm, I like it a lot, has a really eerie vibe to it though the original is beautiful :)
Simply beautiful!!
which album does this version is included?
Just find. Bonus track from a DVD rarerecords.com.au/store/cd/the-bedlam-in-goliath-4/
I like the feeling that im listening to some sort of disembodied machine elf from a DMT trip. Its very warbly. But its a stylistic choice.
Agreed! @HawkSuddenStrike
Would be great if didn't sound like there was a spirit box running in the background. Is lovely but I like Nick Drake's better with music instruments and no added sound affects. I liked yours though, will even look for another version from you guys that is singing and music. I am sure you have a version like that.
@rochabeatlesfan i tottaly agree. a big part of art in general (at least in my opinion) is interpretation
@Dezz1106 yeah it gives him away
Where was this originally released? First time I’ve ever heard this song!
@doughboycod2 Well, it's his song isn't it? ¬¬
Listen the original, the real thing!!!
@jrlsth Yeah, Lazy. Right...
@scullyscoliosis I prefer Nick Drake's version, his voice fit it more.
Nope. He turns in his box.
I need this song from tmv (I already have drake's). Does anybody know where or how I can get it?
Australian (and probably Japanese also) bonus version of Bedlam album CD :)
I love The Mars Volta and I love Nick Drake. I love that The Mars Volta love Nick Drake, but I hate this.
na!dont beet the original.
It's as if the balls were cut off the original song.
this cover is so much better than the original!! so much more to it. another good one is weezers cover of paranoid android, lot better than the original, it never hurts to be open minded!!:)
stop the drugs man.... ur brain will apreciate it.
you had us at the first half not going to lie
radio interference. off station. irritating.
Is the representation of the darkness behind the normal voice, like the things behind the sun.
I think this is a good cover considering that they decided to stay in time. The original is good but Nick didn't sing in rhythm at all. He's like literally behind the whole time.
But isn't that, among other things, what made him interesting?
What? No he wasn’t. He was completely in time with the rhythm.
What do you mean? He's not off at all
I love creative re-imaginings of good songs.
My personal distaste for the Mars Volta aside, I just found this cover very, very dull. I can admit that they're a group of talented fellows that are more than competent with their instruments and that is actually what irks me more about this performance. Whoever the guitar player is didn't seem to spend any time trying to actually learn how it's played. It's not "creative" to do it wrong. It's just lazy.
it's John frusciante. he left out every other bass note and I think it's puts more depth in how the highs ring put.
"wrong"? he played every chord when he was supposed to, even followed the right rhythm, it's right. not exactly right but it's still what things behind the sun is supposed to be
ruined it
i absolutely love the MarsVolta...... and yes, they ruined it.
What is that Whining in my EAR? Oh yes... It's the Filth that is Over Production vs. MP3 Shimmers of Poor Quality.
terrible
Yuk... sorry but yuk
Agreed!
