Nick Drake - Things Behind The Sun

  • From the album Pink Moon
Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
    Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
    Your night or your day
    Who'll hear what I say.
Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are
    Don´t too wise
For down below they never grow
They're always tired and charms are hired
    From out of their eyes
    Never surprise.
Take your time and you'll be fine
And say a prayer for people there
    Who live on the floor
And if you see what's meant to be
Don't name the day or try to say
    It happened before.
Don't be shy you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done
    If only you see
Just what you are beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day
    In autumn for free
    Yes, be what you'll be.
Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
    Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
    Your night or your day
    Who'll hear what I say.
    Open up the broken cup
Let goodly sin and sunshine in
    Yes that's today.
And open wide the hymns you hide
You find reknown while people frown
    At things that you say
    But say what you'll say
About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people round your head
    Who say everything's been said
And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain.

David Parsons unfortunately, from what I've read, he had terrible stage fright and that affected his exposure through public performance and appearances, etc. Not many knew of him, and I think that had to do with his lack of commercial success; cause it surely wasn't because of his superb musicianship, voice and songwriting.

His guitar playing is so good, his singing has that sleepy hazy tone to it that goes well with the quick plucking and the lyrics have this frightening fatalism to them that makes you smile even though things seem so depressing and bleak in Nick's view

I think Nick Drake is the greatest singer-songwriter who've ever lived on this earth. His stark observations of life seem so true. His view is one-pointed, pessimistic, yet he's the most honest and pure one-pointed musician I've ever heard. If you want to listen to happy truths, then Drake's not the one to listen to.
However I find his melancholic music very soothing somehow.

Usually I don't like the comments dealing with the 'dislikes' (such as '6 people are spoilt by Lady Gaga' etc.) to videos of vintage music tracks. But this time I just have to ask: what's the point in watching a video like this, listening to such a profound, touching music, and then thoughtlessly clicking the 'dislike' button? Why are there people who do that kind of things?
It remains a mistery to me.

I was lucky when I first heard him at an all night concert with the nice and yes in july 1969 I understood and really liked him immediatley, as if he d always been around. its good that due to better media availability many people are discovering him. wish Id recorded him. he gave off such a tranquil aura. this song and river man stood out to me.

@ProducShuns His playing is amazing, especially considering the fact that he never overdubbed anything. Everything on this album is done in one take. A few guitar parts are overlaid, if course, but he never used dubbing to correct mistakes. Amazing.

    • @karlbreuer5719
      @karlbreuer5719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Will Braden , not overlaid his tuning lets the song sound like 2 guitars.
I have been practicing him for years & then picked up his book.
Only 5 songs standard tuning brother.
He truly was genius. Hard enough to write one song yet almost 30 most alternate tuning.

    • @roryo7700
      @roryo7700 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah as Karl alludes to, I believe nothing on the album Pink Moon is overdubbed except for the piano on the title song, Nick's playing is so unique and rhythmic that it gives the illusion of multiple guitars

    • @roryo7700

hello again. its interesting to see the interpretations that have arrived to the lines of the song, and there are probably many more good ones out there. Ive thought of similar, but more direct expressions of his sentiment. George Harrison on" love you to " on revolver talks of people standing round ..wholl fill you in with all the sin they see, and Arthur Lee on " you set the scene " from forever changes mentions the people wearing frowns... wholl screw you up but would rather screw you down...

They'll only smile to see you while
    Your time away......
We all may look up to see the person fall from the sky to their death. We watch to the very end. When the moment has passed, we look down and carry on our lives; like cattle momentarily disturbed from eating grass. Something happened, but we won't absorb the gravitas as it stops us from remaining in our safe place.
