As a very long time Gibby player I moved over to PRS due to one very big reason. That damned neck joint!!! I just outgrew the limitations and needed more freedom but loved everything else. PRS solved all of this for me and it was an easy transition. So great job here and they are both great in what they do. I’d take that DGT.

A great player such as yourself makes all the difference!
The sound between the 2 guitars is not worlds apart on my end. I think perhaps the question is which one do you prefer to play? How do they sit in your lap and how was the playing experience different? I wonder if the PRS was more comfortable and ergonomic overall?
Is there anything lacking on the DGT that you would change?

    • @gabriel_guitar

Thank you so much mate, that’s very nice of you!
I’d say the PRS is a much more comfortable and ergonomic guitar, and in terms of playability the necks are very different both in terms thickness and upper fret access, again the PRS is effortless to play. The only thing I’d change about it is the tuners, I’d add locking tuners, but that’s an easy fix.
All that being said, the Gibson wins in terms of character to me, for all it’s flaws I still pick it up more frequently, but that’s very much a matter of personal preference. Objectively speaking I consider the PRS to be a superior guitar 🍻

I have owned Gibson guitars and Epiphone Guitars and Paul Reed Smith SE guitars I'm going to be fair about this comparison with Gibson you are talking about a design that was developed in the middle to late 1950s not that many refinements to the Les Paul Standard I'm going to say this there is a very noticeable difference between a Les Paul Standard that has the Deep neck tendon then one that does not as far as sustained an overall acoustic Dynamics the Paul Reed Smith Guitars even the SE models are 30 to 40 years advanced in their design characteristics a combination of both Fender and Gibson inside of one guitar. So I don't think this is a fair comparison even the core model would not be a fair comparison because it's like comparing in F4 fighter a modern F-22 Raptor

Hi 👋 Gabriel, another excellent comparison video! 📹 👍🏻
Been looking into getting my 1st PRS & heard the hype about the SE DGT. Most people's demos of this guitar are non metal tone demos so your video here really helped me get a better understanding 👍🏻
I think all PRS SE guitars come with Wide Thin necks which is difficult for me to play. But not this DGT which has a unique thin neck. And the 85/15 pickups can give you the modern metal tones.
Your guitar probably has the 85/15 S set but u dialed in the tone so good, it sounds just as good as your LP Standard.
Thanks for taking the time to record this & sharing it with us 👍🏻

Hi mate, thank you, really appreciate it!
Indeed, these guitars can sound rather similar. In terms of neck profile the PRS is very comfortable, not too thin not too thick, it’s just right and it’s almost effortless to play. The pickups are the PRS DGT "S" Humbucker Set which sound phenomenal, specially considering the price point. 🍻

Another great video. 2 things surprised me, especially since my favorite 2 guitars are PRS custom 24s and Les Pauls. I was surprised the DGT had more mids and sounded better in the mix and that the LP was a little more scooped and sounded better in the isolated tracks. I would’ve guessed it the other way around.

Thank you mate, very cool of you. It’s interesting for sure, the PRS sits slightly differently in the mids and it doesn’t have too much high mids which I guess makes it more “mix-ready”, my Gibson at least seems to be quite a bit brighter and less forgiving, any pick noises or squeaks will get picked up. Every guitar has its own "sweet spot" in regard to amp settings. Tipically PRS pu´s are voiced diferently that Gibson PAF´s. In this example howhever it is hard to tell the difference between both guitars (of course YT compression doesn´t help...). I own 4 PRS cores and one modded SE (outstanding after being modded) and 8 LP. All have different sweet points, they all have sonic idiosyncrasies. Relevant to the listener ? Most certainly no, but oceans apart in the players mind. That´s why we, guitarist, keep on buying new guitars - which is rather idiotic.
Anyway, all in all an execellent entertaining and informative video.

All great points my friend! These 2 guitars sound surprisingly close even without TH-cam compression, I try my best to match how I play on both of them to make it a fair comparison, and once you put it in a mix context the minute differences are barely noticeable. They obviously feel very different to play though, the pickups react differently and in terms of playability they’re worlds apart, this particular PRS has one of the most comfortable neck profiles I’ve played to date even though I love the 50s neck on the LP. PRS´s pickups are, typically, voiced differently than Gibson´s. So they have different sweet spots, therefore different eq settings (has a rule of thumb...). More precise highs por PRS, more powerfull and sweet medum, low medium for Gibbys. We are aware that Gibson set the tone paradigm for humbucker guitars back in the 50´s, but whatever the guitar industry currently produces may (and should) go beyond that. And there is no better or worse, just a matter of taste.
Never played the DGT SE but have a few PRS (Cores and SE) as well as LP´s which I both like and use them ramdomly.
One remark: don´t know all the PRS´s pickups on SE series, and certainly not the ones on this highly praised DGT, but those I have used were just ok, and the guitar would definitely benefit from an upgrade.
All in all a great video and outstanding play with really beautifull tones!

Absolutely, totally agree with all the points mentioned. In terms of pickups on the SEs, I think the DGT "S" are by far the best, the way they integrate with the electronics, how they split and how they sound with the volume/tone rolled off, it's just fantastic, it's one of those rare cases where if you change the pickups on the guitar you're kinda ruining the instrument. But yeah, in general I'm not too fond of the pickups on the SE line either.

Even though the PRS is a cool guitar it has no historical mojo. Iconic players will have to play historic music for it to have a seat at the head of the table. Also the pickup switch is in a dumb place. Les Paul has it right where that’s concerned.
