    It’s not all one big dream. It’s just weird, and you supposed to just accept that. It’s fairly faithful to the comics. Definitely worth a read.

      @@chand911well it has lines word for word from the comics but Ramona's personality was completely different and stephen wasn't shown to be gay and they obviously didnt have everything in it like the robot fights or a lot of Nega scott. Edgar Wright wanted scott to end with knives so he made Ramona Unlikeable and the finished the movie but the writer of the comics said it had to be Ramona so they just changed the ending. They also didn't explain Scott is really good at fighting like he is in the comics.
      Its faithful in it's own right but also very different.
      Edit: They did make changes like Envy killed Todd in the comics and other things. They are both equally good though but are different

    • @CrownlessKing88
      @CrownlessKing88 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@blaketfg9374 that’s more what I meant was there’s a lot of Word for Word lines, and just the main story beats are the same. I know however, they left out a ton of plot points. And yes, there are some major changes or things that just didn’t happen but for the most part when I remember it was quite similar like I think there is a whole fight between Ramona and Envy that they didn’t use in the movie. It’s been a long time since I read them but I know that they’re not exactly the same or anything there are many differences, but there are many things that are the same.

    • @blaketfg9374
      @blaketfg9374 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CrownlessKing88 Oh yeah for sure, and the things they didn't have time to explain that happened in the comics they would throw in quick easter eggs for. Like Scott fighting a purple suited dude to be with Kim, he actually did that and wasn't being sarcastic. Or the girl with the bionic arm that Todd cheated on Envy with just being in the background. It's faithful in it's own right. They are making a full show that's animated with the cast from this movie. I wonder if it is going with the style from this movie, with Ramona being less emotional and such, or if they are going to be more faithful to the comics.

    I think its important to note that him dating Knives is one of the tells that Scott is kind of a loser at the beginning of the story. He has nothing going on in his life and is a "nice" guy. Any character older than Knives sees through it and get that he's actually a more indirect form of evil, also hinted to by Nega Scott being a pretty chill dude among other things.

  • @andrewmcmurray9580

    This whole movie is an allegory of relationships as a whole. Any time we start a new relationship, we have to deal with all of that person's evil ex's, not in a physical way, but as the scars they left on the partner. It's why the fights get more difficult as the movie goes on; the more recent the ex, the more raw the lingering psychological effects of that relationship. In the end, it took both of them working together to defeat Ramona's big ex, just like how it takes both people in a relationship to work through big traumas. There's so much to be said about this film and its many layers.

    A few things here (sorry if it gets long):
    Edgar sent them to a martial arts bootcamp for 6 months before filming so they could actually look competent during the fights.
    Each of the evil exes have their number attached to them in some way (2 on Chris Evan's trailer, Brandon wearing a shirt with the number 3, etc.)
    When you said "crank it to 11", if you pause the screen, it is actually goes to 11 in Japanese, so they actually did that.
    Unfortunately the movie came out before the end of the comics. The twins were robot master builders in the comics.
    The coins (you can see it best after Gideon's defeat) are actual Canadian coins (You can easily see the Twoonie ($2) coin as it is copper surrounded by silver.
    The actor that played Matthew Patel is actually a Bollywood actor, which does sort of fit when they broke into song during the fight.
    They cut from the Comic that Todd was cheating on Envy with the drummer (who has a bionic arm)
    As some others mention, Mae Whitman who plays Roxie is a prolific voice actor. She did Katara in Avatar the Last Airbender, She did Tinkerbell, and she also did Batgirl in a bunch of DC Animated shows.

    I think this is one of those movies that you are just supposed to sit back and enjoy, don't think too much about it. The transitions are INCREDIBLE. If you look at some of the breakdown video essays on this movie, it's crazy how the director sort of hid how disconnected Scott is in the first part through transitions - there's a back and forth between him and knives and the camera keeps switching making you think that it's all happening in one place, but if you pay attention to the background THE LOCATION KEEPS CHANGING with transitions of cars, people, clothing racks. It's really cool.
    Plus the music is so rad.

    here’s some fun pilgrim facts
    Many of the characters were boxed off of people Bryan knows irl. Wallace is based off his former roommate, Stacey is based off his sister Stacey, and the name Scott pilgrim came from a song by the band plumtree called Scott pilgrim.
    speaking of plumtree, scott wears a plumtree shirt during the fight with matthew, allot of lucas’s movies are named after plumtree songs, and some of plumtree s music appears in the movie !! (scott pilgrim and go! for example)
    In the film, Stacey worked at the same place irl Stacey worked. So when your watching the movie, Stacey’s name tag is actually the name tag the actual Stacey used !!
    X’s are place subtly in the movie. If you watch the background, you’ll see how much x’s are scattered around
    each ex is associated with theres corresponding number, and is placed subltly throughout the fights. while scott is associated with the number zero
    Bill hader is actually in the movie, he plays the narrator !! (doesn’t show up on screen)
    In the movie, the twins don't speak due to the casting office forgetting to write "identical mid-twenties attractive English-speaking Japanese twins" into the casting call so they accidentally hired 2 guys who dosnt know any English
    in one draft of the script, the film ended with Scott being a serial killer who imagined all of it and killed Ramonas exes in cold blood
    Bryan Lee O’Malley got the idea for the comics after finding out wife had 3 exes all named Matthew
    every actor had to actually learn to play their intrument from scratch except for michael cera who was told to play worse so that he wouldnt outdo the rest of the band
    rival bands are named after video games
    canonically stephen stills is gay, just closeted and heavily internalized
    there’s a scott pilgrim game !! in the end credits, the sprites from the game were used !! (+ the extra life)
    edgar wright told the actors to not blink during the movie to give it more of a comic book vibe. the actors only blink a few times.
    bryan’s brother designed the 8-bit universal logo at the beginning of the film !!
    anyways i definitely reccomend checking out the comics lol.

    Think of the film as a video game. The dream sequences are like secret levels and tunnels into Scott's mind. Each ex is a boss fight. There's a ridiculous amount of subtext and Easter eggs for gamers, film geeks, and comic fans. Also, the original creator of the graphic novel was hugely inspired by video games. Toronto's a cold place in the winter and I'm guessing he spent his formative youth playing games like most kids back then.

    I'm really not a Michael Cera fan, don't care for Super Bad, but I LOVE this movie. The editing, the diologue, the music, so good. The cast is stacked. I love how the fights surprise everyone, but after they go right back to normal.

    The author of the comics wasnt very active in the SP community when i was active in it but from what i understand, he basically said that both a literal interperetation and any metaphorical interpretation involving mental health, dissociation, and relationship trauma are valid

    I absolutely love this movie and one of my favourites, its just fun and unique and I've seen it so many times. An easy watch if you want to watch something diferent from the normal type of movies. Try not to view it as the standard movie structure, its more a wacky, graphic novel style. I love introducing people to this movie who haven't seen it. I just vibe with the style of it. You really get the graphic novel feel that this was based on and its cool

    9:39 Even though it wasn’t shown here, and it probably wasn’t mentioned, it took Michael Cera 33 tries to nail that no-look, package-in-trash-can shot. The director wanted to make it practical, instead of Green Screening and CGI. Also, another fun fact, Michael Cera and Brandon Routh were the only ones who actually knew how to play their instruments. Everyone else had to be taught.

    The best explanation I've heard for the movie is that it's the comic book version of a musical - instead of people breaking into song and dancing around with no one questioning it, people become badass and start fighting. Notice that no one in the movie bats an eye at Matthew Patel busting in and fighting, but they all look puzzled when he starts singing,

    Scott Pilgrim is supposed to be an argument against both "girls only like the bad boys" and the "manic pixie dream girl" because Scott and Ramona are both pretty shitty partners. Ramona is non-committal and floats between boyfriends on a whim (she says she only dated Chris Evans character till Brandon Routh walked by, dating twins), while Scott is immature and selfish (dating Knives out of ease and convenience, being a bad friend and mooch). They only get their happy ending when Scott grows up and Ramona commits.
    Also he wears a zero shirt and drinks coke zero because he's a possible Ex, 0.

    Everyone already told you but nothing is a dream, everything is real, they just live in a videogame world basically, everyone inside their universe kinda knows it

    So yeah this is basically Surrealism, reality with a touch of fantasy or scifi fantasy mixed in. Your not supposed to take it seriously as your just supposed to have fun with it and be nostalgic for video games and anime tropes. While not the best written stories Scott Pilgrim is a fun time with interesting characters and a good lesson with the idea of letting the past go, accepting it and moving on with your life.

    Actually Scott is a pretty selfabsorbed ass. He cheated on Knives (who he used as a rebound), cheated simultaneously on Ramona, the breakup with Kim was iffy too, he leeches off Wallace, the list goes on.
    He just wasn’t as big of a jerk as the 7 evil exes.
    Which is also why’s NEGA Scott is so super nice, because he’s the ‚negative‘ the complete opposite of Scott. 😂

  • @drudle
    @drudle ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's kind of surprising y'all saw Scott as a shy, nice guy. Scott is .. hardly the nice guy. He's an incredibly huge scummy asshole. He was written to be as scummy as possible.
    He uses Knives to get over Envy, treats her badly, cheats on her, cheats on Ramona, was called out as ending his relationship with Kim badly, and was called out as being a "jerky jerk" who is a known womanizer. And through it all he refuses to accept responsibility for any of his actions until the final five minutes.
