How to Remove User Names from Existing Track Changes in Microsoft Word

- Learn how to replace existing and future user names connected to all Track Changes comments and edits with the default label Author. **Note that this process will also remove time stamps (time and date) from comments and edits.
This tutorial was created in Word 2016; however, the steps are the same for Word 2019 and Word for Microsoft 365 and similar for Word 2013 and Word 2010.

Thank you for posting this very informative and accurate how-to. I am third-party editing a novel for a publisher, and realized, in horror, that my full name was plastered all over the tracking comments. Having spent a week editing, I had no wish to redo all that work. I tried a few other (complicated) work-arounds, but they didn't change it.
Your fix was simple, despite the fact that, in my panic, I didn't click "save" when closing the doc (because my brain said I hadn't really changed anything). Third time around, I realized my error and all is well. Now, it says "author". Whew. Much appreciated.

You just saved the day for me. I'd copyedited a 95 page document and THEN noticed the comments were in my full name, not my usual initials. I need to stay anonymous with these edits. This fix will be acceptable!

Hi, thank you for watching my video! Unfortunately, it's not currently possible to change the user name to anything other than "Author" for existing comments and edits. I hope that Microsoft will offer more flexibility in future releases of Word.

Excellent instructions! Is there a way to rename "author" to something else?
