Jaime!! Thank you so much for this video! I had been having a problem just this week with my battery dying on my '03 350Z and couldn't figure out why. We had been going through batteries (about 1 a year for the past two years-bad batteries I think) so I thought "here we go again". I went out today to jumpstart the car and took it for a drive and to get gas. I left the car running at the pump so it wouldn't die again and noticed that the brake lights were stuck on. I came home, pulled the fuse and went to research the issue. Your video was the first to come up and I was so stoked that in a matter of a 3.5 minute video the issue would be fixed and without spending a fortune too!! Thank you Jaime you are a life saver!!
@@713jtmechanic8 of course!! And I can promise you as long as we have our Z (he's an old man now, lol) if we have an issue your page will be the first my husband and I go to for repair how-to's!
Great advise. I had just replaced the brake light switch to fix the issue and could not figure out why it wasn't working. I turned out that the grommet fell apart as well. Thank you for posting and saving me a ton of time!
Sir. I salute you! I struggled a bit until I stopped .. and twisted the switch body 1/4 turn so it came out and then I moved the grommet from the unused lower hole up and pushed it in place and followed by locking the switch body in place. Works. Thanks a lot!
Happy the video helped. Just a suggestion, keep an eye on your brake light for a couple days. A friend of mine had same problem. He used the unused grommet and fell apart a couple of days later.
@@713jtmechanic8 Good point. My car is also a 2004 .. so those grommets are 18 years old. No problem for me .. other than the usual problem of getting a new OEM replacement .. doubt the magical fares at Amazon carry it. :)
... and .. you win the prize! Yesterday evening I found the brake lights on .. and the "NEW" grommet on the carpet in pieces .. as you suggested .. it fell apart in only a day. I have a new grommet coming but in the meanwhile I simply stuck in a piece of 1/8" x 3/4" x 1" plastic with double-sided tape which should work until I get the part.
@@eTraxx wow! The grommet fell apart quickly. Go to the comments on this video and look for Carl Burch. Click on it and read my reply to him. The part # for grommet is on my reply. Thank you 🙏🏼
This helped me in currently dealing with this problem so everytime i get out the car i disconnect the negative terminal so my battery won’t die as fast
Very helpful video but be aware that if you remove the upper anti-lock switch it has to be reinstalled within a adjustment depth. If installed to far into the bracket your brakes will lock up and the car won’t move. I know because it happened on my car.
Very late comment but this also just happend to me ! If you happend to have any laying around, a simple bolt with a nut will also work for this too & than you will never have to worry about it again 👍🏽
Do you have a tip on getting the little grommet in the hole? I put some soap on it, but it is really hard to get to and hold on to. I'm thinking about putting tape on the end of a screw driver to force it in the hole.
It can be tricky. I use spray silicone, but the soap is a clever idea. I used the thinnest flat head screw driver and gently squeezed the grommet in the hole.
What is this rubber plug part called? Mine crumbled and fell out so I am trying to find a replacement for it. For the car engineers...why did they even h=make this hole behind the brake.
I have dorman part # 74015 and it looks just like the one you remove. But it is not staying in because it is too small on the end that goes in the hole
Thank you for your positive feedback. Go on the comments look for Carl Burch comment and click on my reply. Part# is on comment. I believe Carl Burch’s comment is below your comment. I found it on a Nissan parts online. Dealer will have it. The part # is Nissan ORM
Nissan calls the grommet "stopper rubber" part # 46584-S0100. I suggest to call your local Nissan dealer to purchase part or parts. They may have to order themselves.
Thanks so much for doing this vid, I'm having this problem. So basically, the issue is that the grommet is supposed to be there, but fell off at some point, so you borrowed the one from where the cruise control switch would be and moved it up to the brake?
My grommet broke and fell out. And that made the lights stay on. So I replaced it and now the lights still stay on. They were working before the grommet fell out. So I don’t know what happened.
@@713jtmechanic8 just figured it out. I have the two switch set up and didn’t know it. I had just had to replace the clutch grommet yesterday so they broke one day apart and was the only reason I even knew to check for grommets. But didn’t know the brake pedal had two. Apparently the lower one has been missing for a while. (I just got the car a month ago.) it’s the top one that works the break lights and I didn’t know it was there so I was messing with the lower one when I commented before. I’m betting the lower grommet missing is why my cruise control hasn’t been working since I bought the car. About to fix that one take it out for a spin and see.
Does anyone have an idea on what the other switch is for I got a new brake light switch and my lights are still on and yes the grommet is still in tact
Great Question. In my experience, I never seen brake lights stay on after a master cylinder plunger adjustment. Brake lights stay on either switch problem or the rubber gromet on brake pedal. I suggest to check the brake pedal. It should be be making contact to switch. Good luck.

I believe it’s for the clutch. Neutral Safey switch.
What causes the grommet to fall out ?
Good question! Most grommets fall out due to high temperatures in the interior during summer season. The rubber grommet becomes weak and breaks apart.
