@@andypeterson8013 It was a fatal mast bump in an R22 while sending text messages to a barge captain he had just buzzed on the lake below! There were no witnesses so we can only speculate what caused it but since he often flew @ the limits of the aircraft it was probably a low G pushover as he was showing off for the boat! The R22 has a semi-rigid rotor and definitely has limitations on stunts which is why the wicked RedBull stunt chopper uses a rigid rotor system! Sending text messages probably didn't help his ability to react to the mast bump!

Flown in lots of places, fixed and rotary. NZ Heli pilots have to be the most skilled and excellent I've flown with. All that deer recovery work in really challenging terrain, the preference for the MD 500 series aircraft and private ownership and operations away from traffic, built a skill set and "stick and rudder" feel that is unique to NZ. Doubts? Go book yourself a heliski holiday in the the land of the long white cloud. Unforgettable for the skiing, pristine environment, and the flying. Highest per capita private ownership of helicopters anywhere in the world. This is because a farmer there needs a 4WD drive... and a chopper just to get to chunks of a "ranch". Check out "The last great adventure", an old doco on deer recovery industry at its zenith. What they did with MD 500c and D models will blow your mind... Crazy? yes but brilliant...

Great landing. Not difficutl to do. Being there, done that while flying the OH6 , precursor of this MD500, many years ago. 60 - 70 knots, 50-100 feet, dump the power, bleed the speed before and on the roll/pedal turn, back on the power, and settle it down. As someone said before me long ago, " a helicopter's manuverability is only limited by the pilot's imagination and skill." Still, impressive to watch from the outside.

It's a beautiful thing that guy gets to do. While the landing was cool and impressive, the far more impressive thing to me is flying a heli in those conditions. I've wondered how the Kobe Bryant thing happened and did a heli sim flight in similar conditions, as well as flying at night in the mountains with almost no visual reference. Despite fully understanding the instruments, the thing is helis are an incredibly unstable vehicle and keeping the instruments stable without visual cues devolves into a shit storm. At least for me, in the sim. So this guy flying confidently through heavy fog is pretty impressive to me. I pull those landings all the time in the sim. Flying in fog for me is a far less confident experience.
