    The short skids were the original, the high skids are slightly stronger on the inside and allow better clearance off the ground for off airport landings. The main reason for the left seat, is so the original company Hughes, could claim seating for five passengers in its advertisements, 3 in the front, one squeezed into a center jump seat kit, and 2 in the back compartment. They also did this when they marketed their piston helicopter the 300. My first lessons were in the left hand seat in the 300. The instructor would have me friction the collective, then move my left hand to the cyclic, then with my right hand use the radio on the instrument panel, then reverse that to normal.

      Thanks for sharing this. There is so much kinetic energy that the rotors are moving so long after shutdown. Does the 500E have brakes?

    A real pilots machine the MD stands for McDonnell Douglas but they had nothing to do with the design and development of this aircraft, it is a Hugh's helicopter born and bred.

    I have that one both VCR recording and DVD. The 500 can be flown from either seat, primarily as the fuel tank is evenly across the floor of back cabin, for weight and balance purposes, would though depend on which collective has the starter button though. In many of those old films, the editor either by accident, or the director wanted the audience to see the action moving in a certain direction, so the film segment was spliced in backwards thinking the audience wouldn't notice.

      That goes for any helicopter since the control stick is on both sides but in military like the uh series the Peter pilot flew the helo while the commander sat in the left seat

    Nice video of the Hughes MD-500E model.
    The "Buzzard" ones used in the Rockstar GTA IV & V are the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse

      Play the game online. Really wish they had realistic and correct sound effects for the Buzzard, Valkrie, Frogger and Maverick. Among others. Would really add to the game immersion.

    This is how the GTA buzzard needs to sound. They got its sound wrong in the game. It doesn't sound like a Huey, more like a buzzsaw coz of the fast and small main rotor!

    Why did the pilots get out and then shut off the engine? Seems like a somewhat dangerous thing to do.

      No not exactly the safest helo operation behaviour

    • @javacup912
      @javacup912 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +HDaviator Nothing dangerously, really. Controls are friction-locked and she's at idle. The engine needs a 2-min cool down, so get out, gather you things, and when the time's up, roll off the throttle and batt off. Just good time management and safe operation.

      Plus the Hughes MD-500 is a far cry from the safest helicopters given that its safety record is not the best.
      But at the same time, I'm shocked at how the pilot got out of the helicopter and left the engine running. That I heard is a VERY BIG NO, NO!!!!

      Options just like you would get on some cars

    • @javacup912
      @javacup912 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nelson Melamund The size of the skids are optional when ordering the ship. The older C models ordered by the military, use the short down tubes, but most civilian version choose the longer down tubes, especially if they are doing any type of external load/water, to clear grass. The landing light is hot enough to burn grass if it's too close. In a nutshell, it's preference of the customer.

    • @stevansweeney
      @stevansweeney 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +javacup912 Thank you! Another question, why does the command pilot sit in the left seat on a 500 when the rest of the industry generally puts the pilot on the right side? And why the right side?

    • @nelsonmelamund1225
      @nelsonmelamund1225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One good reason I found was because of rotation, the fuselage tends to roll lower to the left side, putting the left skid down first, therefore the left seat pilot can better judge touchdown. This video seems to illustrate that.
