  • Is Emerald Flat worth It?
Before you drop $92.00 for a gallon of paint, shouldn’t you know, is Emerald Flat worth it? That is a lot for a single gallon of paint. First, let’s review some quick facts:
    Is it:
    • Zero VOC
    • Low Splatter
    • Water Clean-up
    • Can it be matched to any color?
    • Mildew resistant
    • Primer and paint in one
    • Smooth finish

At $94.00 retail, is Emerald Flat worth it?
    How does it Cover?
The Emerald Designer series is known for three things:
    • coverage
    • washability
    • unique color selectionSmooth

    Coverage Grade 10
I gave Emerald Flat a challenge by having a dramatic color change from white to dark blue.
I found the coverage of Emerald Flat to be excellent. At $92.00 a gallon, it better cover well and it did.
    Workability of Emerald Flat
The workability of the paint is an important factor. I good painter can spend 8 hours brushing a single gallon of paint. If it is difficult to work with, meaning:
    • short working time
    • paint doesn’t spread smoothly
    • doesn’t like to bond or make firm contact
it can decrease productivity, and increase fatigue.
The workability of Emerald Designer Flat was none of those things.
    Workability grade: 10
I found the coverage of Emerald Flat to be excellent. At $94.00 a gallon, it better cover well and it did.
Is Emerald Flat worth it? How about Touching-up
Flat paints have two distinct advantages over all other sheens. First, they hide imperfections. Secondly, the touch-up well. Therefore, if you are not likely to wash your walls but prefer to break out a can of paint to touch up walls flat paint is your paint.
    Touching-up Grade: 7
Unfortunately, Emerald Flat did not touch-up well using this dark color. Perhaps a lighter color would have touched up better.
    Washability
How well a paint can clean-up determines its washability. Since we ask the question “Is Emerald Flat worth it,” it better has excellent washability.
    I stained the walls with:
    • crayon
    • red wine
    • pencil
    • coffee
    • mustard and catsup
and allowed the products to dry on the wall. I then cleaned it with Krud Kutter, Simple Green, and bleach/water mixture.
I want to determine if either the stains or the paint come off.
    Washability Grade:
All stains came off except a slight bit of mustard stain. It seems that the Tumeric could not be removed even with all those cleaners. With that said, this is exceptional washability for flat paint. Only PPG Manor Hall Flat paint had better washability.
    Durability
Durability refers to how does the paint hold up to the cleaning. Is there burnishing? Did any paint come off?
Typically when walls are cleaned and rubbed by a cloth, even a micro-fiber cleaning cloth, it can burnish the paint.
There was no burnishing or altering of either the sheen or color after cleaning
Durability Grade 10 out of 10
Determining the Value Of Emerald Flat
Is Emerald Flat paint worth it? To answer this, we need to take the positive and negatives grades and compare them to other comparable paints, such as Ben Moore Arua or a much cheaper paint PPG Manor Hall Semi-gloss.
    The short answer
is, I prefer Emerald flat over Arura because of the workability. Arura is very thick and spreads like cake batter.
PPG Manor Hall Flat is about $50.00 a gallon and has only slightly less coverage and workability than Emerald Flat. However, PPG Manor Hall exceeds or is equal to Emerald Flat when comparing washability and durability respectively and touch-up.
Because Emerald Flat retails for $92.00 and PPG Manor Hall retails for $50.ish I would say Emerald Flat is not worth it.
If you watch the video, I say it’s the best flat I have ever used. This is true, but it only a hair better than Manor Hall yet twice the price.
If you can get the Emerald Flat on sale for the $64.00 price tag, I would be much more inclined to buy it over PPG Manor Hall for the coverage and workability alone.

I just used this on aluminum doors exterior doors and wood interior doors in full gloss, sprayed with airless and ff tip and brushed and rolled 1 door just to test it out. as far as painting with it, it some of the best paint I've used, lays out beautifully with brush and roller and the doors i sprayed looked like sheets of glass with the gloss finish, but even on the wood doors i didn't find it very durable, i get it has a long cure time but in renovations where there are other contractors or when home owners are in the home at night its scratchabilty is to easy. I am also out of the customers house before this cure time is up so I can't speak to its durability after that cure time is up but it is frustrating on the job when you come in every day and have to do touch ups... and on that note i will say touch ups blended in unbelievably for a full gloss paint
so needless to say after that rant i have mixed feelings about it and don't know if i'd recommend in high traffic areas or doors, which is a big flaw for 100$ a gal paint

I’m confused. I called sherwin Williams. As I wanted matte. They said flat and matte in the emerald line is not same washabilty and durability as satin. And flat and matte have to be very gentle. With lightly dampened cloth. To avoid future damage. So I’m confused.

I use emerald flat on all my customers walls . In 25 years I’ve never used a better paint . It covers the best , works the best , cleans the best , touch ups the best .
I wonder the REAL chemistry difference in emerald select vs emerald . Is it just the starting point of specific base colors for the purpose of certain colors ? Or is there really a component of different raw materials and manufacturing process ?
It’s hard for me to think regular emerald flat could be improved upon .

    • @streamscreen
      @streamscreen ปีที่แล้ว

I think the main difference is the emerald designer edition has some custom colors that can only be tinted in the ultra white base, and emerald has the extra white base but not the ultra white base.

In reviewing the quick facts questions, (Is it:); I noticed the one that says 'Can it be color matched in any color'. Most of the time that doesnt really have to do with the type/quality of the paint you're putting it in, it has to do with the scanner/colormatch machine being used to match the sample provided by the customer. I could be using for example BEHR Marquee paint, (supposedly best one coat coverage, supposedly best customer satisfaction etc) as my paint that I want to match this color into.
But if the scanner being used by the paint associate is not calibrated, not high quality, doesn't take an accurate color measurement; it's not gonna matter what quality of paint you use. The colormatch isn't going to turn out well.

      @klappenbergersonpaintingha2933  3 ปีที่แล้ว

You are correct if the scanner is not calibrated or of poor quality or the person behind the counter is incompetent all bets are off. However, I can say that in my experience, there has been much improvement in matching colors. Thank God.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will put it on the list. The next couple of reviews are going to be about which Ben Moore covers the best. I compared 7 different Ben Moores white semi-glosses. Ben Moore has a new product called Command and I review that as well. And the third will be on which cabinet paint has the most durability against oils.

Can I expect the same performance from Duration Home flat? I’ve been told that Duration is actually more washable/durable despite Sherwin Williams marketing Emerald as the best.

    • @klappenbergersonpaintingha2933
      @klappenbergersonpaintingha2933  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Krysty, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. SuperPaint flat has poor washability. The best washing flat I've used for the lowest price is PPG Manor Hall. Manor Hall flat is excellent. Emerald Flat is good, not great. If you switch to a matte finish, the washability increases dramatically yet the sheen is still close to a flat.
