  • At this taping, the band had a confederate flag backdrop, which in 1975 was still in wide use in marketing campaigns for bands, TV shows and other entertainment and products.
"Free Bird" is one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most iconic songs, released in 1973 on their debut album, "pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd." The song gained immense popularity and became a staple of their live performances.
Their performance of "Free Bird" on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975 is legendary. The Old Grey Whistle Test was a British television music show that featured live music performances from various artists.
The song's structure includes a slower, melodic opening that builds up to a powerful guitar solo section. During live performances, this solo section was often extended, allowing guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins to showcase their exceptional skills.
Their performance on the Old Grey Whistle Test is celebrated for capturing the essence of the band's live energy and the impressive guitar interplay between Rossington and Collins. It's considered one of the standout performances of the song and contributed to its lasting impact on rock music.

Old grey whistle test is a goldmine for a ton of bands, especially from the 60s and 70s....Ed King had already left... Stevie Gaines hadn't joined just yet.... I saw them at Oaklands " Day on the Green " Skynard opened before Peter Frampton...he headlined the show....needless to say Frampton was really good! ........but Lynyrd Skynyrd completely stole the show!

Freebird live at the Day on the Green in Oakland is probably the best version of this song. They have their classic 3 guitar lineup again in Oakland and it is epic. Ronnie had a nasal problem in the Old Grey Whistle version, and only 2 guitars in the band, the Isle of Wight version is better also. No one reacts to some of their lessor known songs. so pick one of those out. Songs like Every Mother's Son, All I Can Do is Write it, Was I Right or Wrong, Am I Losin or Comin Home to name a few. Van Zant tells some great stories in these. And you're right the album that has some of the early stuff is very under rated.

Ronnie Van Zant had some type of head cold of flu here , that's why his voice is a bit weak .He was still great . Also ,they had recently lost 3rd guitarist ED King . So they were a man short here also .

Also , they full show here at OGWT has much better sounding songs thann this one. You should check out the full performance. It was really great and of course someone upgraded it to 1080P HD ! You can clearly see Ronnie was barefoot ,as he was at most all their shows .
