I learnt how to technical draw when I was an archaeologist (plans, stratigraphy, and artefacts) in the 1990s/early 2000s. I carried this over to my writing, often creating objects, maps, plans, and even 3D representations of buildings for projects to help bring my worlds to life. I thought this would give me a decent background for cover design. I was wrong. It's a completely different beast, but one I am enjoying learning about simply because I love creating things and have the software skills and mindset to apply it. This is a fantastic interview, thank you. I clicked away to buy Stuart's book about 20 mins in.

What? You mean I can't do it in MS paint?

Canva is free for creating covers. Or slight change for Canva Pro depending on your budget. Also, Creative Fabrica.

Am I understanding that you can’t use the images from your book for merchandise (book marks, bags, etc)? I hired designers for the book cover and interior and was hoping to use some of the images for bookmarks but now I’m wary...

Just ask your designer. It's probably fine but you need to check licensing as that is often different for merchandising than it is for covers.

You can specify merchandising rights. For instance, I negotiated with my hybrid publisher to have the right to make and sell such giveaway merchandise using the artwork for my novels.

Ive been trying to figure out how to self-publish for a week. It's tonnes harder than writing the book.

Did you say that the authors name NEED to be on the cover. I have used my business domain name, Bringing Forth The Best In Our Kids, because we have had a team making the book,
