    I changed the cover of my first book a couple of months ago because it had never done well and I think it didn't illustrate the book as well as I thought. It now sells double the amount with no ads or promotion... It is worth it.

    Thank you. Just purchased your book on how to self-publish after watching your two videos on the pros and cons of traditional vs sel-publishing. Then I watched this video, too. Both very informative and actually helped me make the final decision to self-publish as I want to donate all of my proceeds. Thank you. This was so timely as I have been really battling between the two options.

    Joanna. I absolutely love your videos. Such a hoot to learn you have a Masters I Theology. I am learning so much from your videos, and your enthusiasm is inspiring. I'm hoping to earn my keep in the Christian non-fiction genre. Just started on my second book this week. After listening and watching your video, I'm going to begin my search for a book designer. Thanks for doing what you do. Have a fantastic weekend and God bless.

      Thanks Horace, my Theology degree was a way back (1994-1997) but I still use some of what I learned in my thrillers! Happy writing!

      Very true and also good to know. Easy to think that people ahead in their careers have it all figured out and perfect, but in reality, we are all always learning, growing, and evolving.

    Hi Joanna, I am looking at getting a book cover designed on fiverrr & need to provide a background image from depositphotos to the designer.
    I like the one used on the below two books. Would you happen to know what keywords to search on depositphotos to find images similar to this.
    "Seeing the Supernatural: How to Sense, Discern and Battle in the Spiritual Realm".
    "Glory Carriers: How to Host His Presence Every Day".

    Hi, Joanna. Love your videos. They are so helpful. I also love your books. I read 'One day in Budapest' and just finished 'Desecration'. I have a question. In the notes of Desecration, you say that you use US spelling but some British words. Can you give some advice? I am not a native English speaker but I plan to write in English and I don't know which spelling to choose - BE or AmE. The story takes place in the UK and the characters will be from the UK so it's obvious that they'll use British words. But what about spelling? Why did you choose to use AmE spelling?

    • @thecreativepenn
      @thecreativepenn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use American spelling because British people understand that words are spelled differently, but (many) Americans don't. I had typos reported on my first book based on British spelling, so I switched to US to avoid those complaints. Hope that makes sense!

    This is one of the few areas where i'm going to disagree, principally out of necessity. I can't afford to put $500 on a cover (let alone $2k for the four books I have currently in the works) and while I don't doubt Jane's quality of work , your arkane/map walker covers are excellent, when I look at cheaper the designers in the more $100 end of the market they aren't doing anything i can't do myself. I don't exactly have book design chops, but I've been a photographer a long time and I know photoshop and indesign backwards so i'm happy that I can do better than the cheap end. Something like Rock Hard Neighbour would take me about a couple of hours tops. I'd agree that we should pay a designer if we can, but I do think its important to remember than not everyone starting out as an indy has that kind of cash - or might have to choose between designer and editor (which is where I am - I chose editor)

      Absolutely - and Canva.com is a great place to get free/cheap covers as well - and if you are good at covers, then go for it. I look at the very sorry example of the cover I tried way back and it's terrible - so a pro design is a non-negotiable for me

      I think it also helps that the genre i'm writing in - Lee Child, Matt Hilton and so forth has a vogue toward simpler covers than the Dan Brown type waters you fish in.
