I made this video for the indie author fringe fest... it combines several of my articles on book cover design, that have over 100K views. If you're interested in learning how to design a book cover that sells for any genre, this video will help - for more detailed, technical videos on book cover design, check out the link above!
GET HELP: I help authors with book cover design templates and tutorials because I believe everyone deserves to tell their story, regardless of budget. And while it's possible to design your own book cover that's "good enough" to publish, investing in a professional cover will absolutely boost sales and make marketing so much easier (not to mention, save you a ton of time and frustration).
If you’re looking for a hassle-free book design service that will get it right the first time and deliver a cover you love (or your money back) - visit www.creativindiecovers.com and see what we can do for you!

Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.
On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.
If you're a writer, artist, or entrepreneur, make sure you SUBSCRIBE - then let me know what you need help with, and I'll make a video just for you! Here are some resources to get you started:

What we need is like a tinder for book covers. You just swipe if you like the cover or not. I think that's the exact sort of feedback you'd really want. Because that would encourage people not to give a lot of thought to it.

    This is sooooooo helpful!!!
Everyone just says you need a better cover or it looks amateurish without saying why, or how to fix it!!!
    Thanks for giving details!

When I was an early teen, I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy. I answered a poll from a publisher, and they asked why I chose their book. One option was “cover art.” I realized then, that the cover was the reason I picked it up and read the back cover story plot, then I read a part in the middle and bought it.
But, what I liked about the cover was that it held images which also appeared on past covers of great stories: a knight with a sword, a strange landscape, a dragon... were typical of my books.
I just realized, I should search the best sellers in my genre and see if there are any iconic images, cover art gestalts, if you will.

Great! yeah covers are kind of symbolic short code, to let you know very quickly what the genre is (not the story).

Just a note on covers being representative and clear rather than creative and different.
This exact principle pops up in copywriting, that you don't want to be clever or funny, you want to be clear so that you can make the sale.

Thank you for this concise presentation. I was struggling with a cover for the young reader. I made the mistake of asking on FB and got all sorts of different things! After listening to you I went with one sharp picture that fit the genre and the main character and used a sharp contrasting color for the font. It has the blink factor!

Great video. Thank you for sharing. As much as I like playing around with photoshop, designing a book cover for my first novel is not something I am going to take on myself. I'm going to leave that to the professionals. I loved hearing your perspective on the choices you make and why. I enjoyed all 43 minutes of the video. :)

Thanks Derek I appreciate your shared expertise, just one thing bugging me here - fonts V typefaces
"Gary Hustwit, director of Helvetica, agrees. "Most people other than type designers just say 'font,'" Hustwit says. "Among graphic designers, though, I'd say it's a generational thing. A lot of the older designers I've met, like Massimo Vignelli, always say 'typeface. - In brief: A font is what you use, a typeface is what you see."

    • @DerekMurphycreativindie

from $350 to $850, which is a pretty common range for good design. www.creativindiecovers.com

How many books have you sold and what make you an expert on Book Covers. Thanks

    • @DerekMurphycreativindie
      @DerekMurphycreativindie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Experience mostly... I think I've made about $100K designing covers, back when I was doing it full time (I don't anymore). A lot of covers, needing to make sure my clients sell books so they can come back for more... but it's also pretty easy to avoid ugly design (background in fine art, studied painting in Italy, etc).
I'm not sure how my covers for my books really proves anything, it's so hard to measure, but I have sold over 100K books too so I'm doing OK.

Considering the United States was the first country to manufacture nuclear weapons and is the only country to have used them in combat, with the separate bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, I don’t think ‘arrows of Islam’ should allude to Islam waging war with nukes. Then again the author of that book is probably a racist delusional veteran who doesn’t know a single person who practices Islam.
But thanks for the clarity on designing book covers. Great video
