  • After many requests following our retrospectives of the old Dragon Ball Z games, we are returning to Legacy Of Goku. However, we're doing it in a new way! Today, we dive deep into this Gameboy Advance relic which was critically panned and see if it's truly as abysmal as they say...

    Remember Legacy of Goku II only happen cause Legacy of Goku 1 was selling like hotcakes back then despite the game not being quite as good. Back in 2002 the Dragon Ball Z hype were hot in North America and the urge of getting a chance to play the very first ever North America Dragon Ball Z game was exciting. Remember before the GBA, PS2, GameCube era, there was never a Dragon Ball Z game released for NA yet and as Toonami brought the DBZ anime to a more wider western audience, the DBZ hype was big. Almost as big as the Pokemon hype, I remember getting excited seeing DBZ been showcase on GamePro magazine saying there will be DBZ games coming for PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and GBA, as soon as the games are coming, my excitement got the better of me. I end up buying all DBZ games back then whether or not they're good or not and I'm glad I did cause because I help bought LOG1, the money I throw at Webfoot lead to them improving the game with the sequels.

  • @Crow_Rising
    @Crow_Rising 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I genuinely believe in the concept of judging games not just as individual experiences, but also as combined groups. The Legacy of Goku series for example. You can look at each game individually, but taking into account that they are a series together and that certain ones came before others contextualizes them. Judging Legacy of Goku 2 as a standalone game by today's standards, it might not hold up as well to a new player as it might someone nostalgic to it. However, starting with the first game will contextualize it to them to where they might be able to see what improvements were made in the second game, and they will be more capable of appreciating those little details. It doesn't guarantee they will like they game, but they might at least be able to acknowledge that it was an improvement.
    However, at the same time, I don't think that people should get so obsessed with judging games as a group that they forget they are individual experiences. It's logical to compare to what came before or since to a certain extent, but it's also important to remember that each game is also it's own thing. It's important, I think, to examine games from both perspectives. It's normal and natural for us humans to have preferences and biases, but we should try to put such things aside when trying games out for the first time. A game being old or made in a particular style doesn't necessarily mean you won't like it, and you can't know for sure unless you can give it a genuine chance. We can't even trust mainstream opinions to tell us what we will and won't like, the only way to know for sure is to go in as blind as possible and give it a shot. Reviews should be treated as a guidance on what to expect, not a mandate on what to and not to like.

    This game will always be special to me because of how I got it (I don't have my copy anymore) but even as a kid I knew it wasn't the best game, the sequels were much better.

      Same. I wished for LOG2 for my birthday but got LOG1 instead. Like a good kid I of course showed gratitude, but my dad could see I wasn't happy, so he took me to Toys R Us to trade it for the sequel... I thought... in actuality he bought me the sequel and let me keep the first game too.

      @@PikaLink91 I had anxiety as a kid so instead of sleeping in my bed I would sleep on the couch in the living room so I could see the light from my mom's room, this bothered my stepmother for some reason ( mom didn't care and my therapist said it was actually kind of a common thing for kids to do) so my dad made a deal with me to buy the game in exchange for sleeping in my bed.

    I used to enjoy the Legacy of Goku trilogy as a child, but looking back on it... The gameplay doesn't feel like Dragon Ball Z.
    It's basically a Secret of Mana knock-off where the Z-Fighters have a puny and limited amount of combos, powers, and abilities.
    The trilogy would've been much better on 3D consoles like the GameCube where there are more controls and less limitations.

  • @kindasomeviews

    I can't tell you how god awful Legacy of Goku 1 was. Even as a kid i could tell how shit it was, especially coming off of the Budokai games and the other GBA entries. I remember being so excited to come back to Legacy of Goku 2 on the bus, meanwhile the first game just rots away, staring back at me, giving me PTSD flashbacks of fighting unfair dinosaur fights to barely beat Raditz and everything 2-shotting me to death on Namek. If it weren't for the Solar Flare spam2win, this would be next to impossible to beat, even you're maxed out

  • @dblsomeday

    I played this one after LOG2 and my god was it a major step backwards. Admittedly, I still loved it because I was a major Dragon Ball fan as a kid and loved anything that had to do with the series. But I just remember it being sooo hard. I eventually beat it but I remember never playing it again after that.
    I was actually able to secure a CIB copy a year or two ago just so I could have the complete GBA DBZ collection, but I still don’t plan on revisiting it any time soon lol.

      To this day I’ve never been more disappointed with a game, going from LoG2 back to LoG1 was such a huge bummer for me bc the saiyan/frieza saga were my favorites

    • @Rude_Boi

      How could it be a step backwards if you went back to the first game from the second ? Lol LOG2 is a huge step forward from it's predecessor.

  • @tamerkoh
    @tamerkoh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will say, LoG1 at least has good bangin' music. There's a lot of great tracks. Starting with LoG2, the music would then be based on the Faulconer soundtrack, with some liberties. And then in Buus Fury, it's full recreations of tracks from the Faulconer soundtrack, very few liberties. They all sound great though!
    But yeah, LoG2 was a massive improvement over LoG1. Though, it did introduce something I really hated, that came back in Buu's Fury too: The Level Gates. Surprisingly, despite LoG1's broken combat mechanics, you never actually need to grind in the game. I did a playthrough of it, just passing through all the areas once, and killing whatever comes across me, and did just fine. Goku ends up at Level 23 by the end of that, 2 levels under the max. But at least nothing stopped you from doing that.
    Starting with LoG2, however, now you're forced to do these grind sessions every now and then, just to open the gate and continue, and I hate that. It completely kills the pace of the game; shouldn't I be allowed to enter an area, and take my chances?

When I got to the store it was sold out... which made me sad. This game was on the shelf though... So I ended up getting this instead. I got home, started playing and felt that actual dagger your were talking about in the video. One of my earliest cases of buyers remorse.

    The Infogrames IS Atari

    Legacy of Goku 1 is broken and difficult from the controls and cryptic game play fetch quest missions
    Legacy of Goku 2 is more balanced of the 3 games, it is not easy if you go rushing into levels with out preparing but it is also not hard if you have the right character and level, the fetch quests are not that bad
    Buu's Fury/Legacy of Goku 3 is way too easy from the equipment sharing for boosting EXP quickly and the games items especially with all of the characters you can get high levels fairly easily, Legacy of Goku 2 was just the more balanced game from difficulty and challenge to items given

    Legacy of Goku is good but short. LoG 2 was just so good that it made LoG look worse than it was. The music in LoG was great, I still love that Namek theme.
