Superglue (Cyanacrylate) hardens because of the humidity in the surrounding air. You can speed this up by blowing at the joints because the air in your lungs has a higher water amount than the surrounding air (unless you are working in a sauna). While hardening it gets similar to 2 component glues.
I thought your soldering technique was really good and the entire installation was beautifully done. A demonstration of excellent workmanship and attention to detail. Greetings from Arizona.
Hey, thank you very very much, I do take pride in what I do, but I also understand the road to improvement is a long one. Thankfully my car was made in 02 so I got cruise controll😉 I'm happy you enjoyed and found my channel, lots of this type of stuff lol
Cyanoacrylates are common staking adhesives for post-manufacture modifications. The way you're staking those wires is very similar to how it's done in-industry. Nice job! Your soldering technique isn't bad, but please make sure you're using either No Clean fluxes or you completely clean up 100% of the flux you put down, or you're going to be facing down corrosion in the future from un-activated flux residues. For stripping those 30awg Kynar wires post-installation, check out the Xuron 501 adjustable strippers. Should make your life a lot easier. Good job!
I installed a chip like this in a older model ps2 once, and to my surprise it worked. I literally screamed out like Emmett L Brown " IT WORKED!". That was a pain in the ass.
Selling my PS2 with modchip today, for a fellow who will use it much more than me, so its super fine. Also just bought my first jelly flux and hotair to recap my Amiga which was successful. Super helpful video even for other electronic tasks, cheers! =)
I would like to see a video about ps2 mod chips I was young back in the days when they came out..I have only used clones in the past..but you can’t find them anymore or is to expensive..
I'm working on my vintage chip collection... LOL! they are REALLY hard to find, i'm going to try to get a few more then i'll do the video, It's really interesting to me, all the different chips and how they're all the same, but not really.
@@vdochev yea, the freemcboot memory card is very convenient. However I use a modchipped system to make those memory cards, so they still serve a small purpose.
@@ThirstWorldTTV You can make one without the modchip, but, yes, modchips do serve purpose. Really good soldering skills on the video and AMAZING cable management! BTW, have you tried modding a Wii? I heard latest models are pretty hard to do, because they started chopping off the legs of the bios chip.
@@vdochev thank you very much. I havenot modded a wii yet! But I do have a very old original modchip for the wii. The d2ckey chip. Pretty intense hard install and I'm greatly looking forward to it! It WILL be on TH-cam also.

You could tell the wires could have used some flux. The solder was turning chocolately especially with those first two wires on the crystal. Ever since I started building keyboards, I now appreciate flux a lot more thinking the rosin core was good enough when I didn't realize that flux burns away. Major appreciation on what you do and I am super jealous of your wiring.
@19:50 - Popping it back together. It is hard to see as the video is going quite fast, but the metal cage grounding pins seems to be really close to your wiring. This is something that I recommend paying a lot of attention to, as you risk a short - possibly right at when turning it on, or in the future when the plastic has given away. Especially if going through those large center holes, the clearing may not be as good as you'd think - and there's usually ground all around. Use a via instead, if absolutely necessary. Nice job, I thought it was a DMS3 chip. Brought back lots of memories from all the consoles I used to mod with all kinds of different chips (enameled wire and without glue) and replaced lasers :-)
there are these little sections that are cut out of the metal cage, and they are bent like little fingers, each "little bent metal finger" is touching the ground plain, it goes all around the cage, what i do when i run wires along the ground plain is flatten those little metal fingers. so they are not touching the wires. i actually ment to showcase that in this video but forgot and the video was relatively long aswell. but you are ABSOLUTELY correct. and you used to do these back in the day? THATS SO COOL. I love meeting people who had done this when it was relevant. i'm very late to the party lol. Thank you very much for watching and checking out my channel
Pure nostalgia... this takes me back 15 years to fun with a slim PS2 and a Crystal Chip... must be somewhere... will try and dig it out. I seem to remember a few vias that needed fibre glass pencil treatment... maybe that was specific to the slim version?) I approve of the 'wire management' :o)
I use the scratch pen on the slims on almost all of em. But a some revisions of ps2 fat need it too. Always a handy tool to have. Im so happy you found this video

I'd like to request that you do a video or 2 that's more of a step by step, how to kind of deal. That aside, excellent video. The solder work on this one was stellar.
Im huge into PS2 modding, ive never done the chip soldering though, if you did a tutorial or a chip video about differences it would be hell'a cool! I got a ps2 stored fully functional and with a mod chip for the only porpuse of modding the case, like painting it and stuff, anyways, do more of these vids!! I subbed and this video goes straight into favs
Just doing that mod and have 12 of 21 connections soldered. The next step are the connections close to the modchip that have to be soldered directly to the chip. I had no idea how to do that because it is so tiny and even i have a microscope my hand-eye-coordination is not that good to use it for soldering :-) So i googled and found your video which shows me at 4:00 exactly how to do it. Will try it later that day. Thank you.
Nice clean install. I like seeing people that take pride in their installs like you do. Now for some constructive criticism, I’ve never liked melting insulation as it just looks unprofessional in my opinion and I’m sure you feel the same way from what you said in the video. A tip you can use for that in future installs is to strip the kynar with some small fingernail clippers. They’re great for stripping wire in tight areas like that and it makes the install look much cleaner in the end. Hopefully that’d didn’t come across wrong. Thanks for sharing!
if you watch my other PS2 mod video, you'll see that's exactly what i did, fingernail cutters to strip, haha, your right though, it is so much better, i really HATE burning the insulation. but since the last video had fingernail cutters i wanted to do something different for this video
@@ThirstWorldTTV Fair enough. I hadn't seen the other so I figured I'd give you the tip in case you didn't know it. Again clean, install none the less. Keep up the good work!

Superglue gets activated when it comes in contact with water molecules on a surface. So it is always a good idea to wipe the surface with a wet cloth before application.
Maybe use a plastic razor on the superglue? That way you're not damaging the chip housing as much. All in the name of aesthetics haha! If you ever need a sponsor, I hope you get iFixit! I love their stuff.
superglue absorbs water to cure, it is a form of acrylic resin once in contact with water or humid air it starts forming a plastic mesh. also why it loves to bond your fingers to stuff or together, and if you ever get your hands on the special medical superglue. on a side note, one of my co-workers gave me his old original chipped Playstation, i know his soldering methods, so i stripped it open and re wired it .. he used wire from an old mains cable!
I would trust you to chip my whatever. That said, your use of super glue is an unnecessary detriment to serviceability. It may look striking, but it would actually just be better to use heat shrink tubing, and perhaps some double-sided tape. Your solder joints are lacking, compared to the "clean look" of you wire management. Again, I would totally let you chip my xbox or whatever. Keep up the practice.
Thank you very much, every day I'm practicing. Solder joints are #1, takes years or practice to perfect every time. And as for the superglue, it's never cause any issues and the few times I've needed to remove the wires it's never been any troubble. I mainly only use superglue if I'm going for artistic wiredressings. Witch is very few mods
Hello, is there a button combination to enter in the menu with the configurations of this modchip? I know that I can disable it by pressing quickly the reset button for 6 times but what about a sort of hotkey for the menu? Something like the Matrix Infinity's triangle+circle hold to enter the menu after reseting. I really need to disable the RGB-green fix since I can't use component if I don't disable the modchip.
I didn’t remember what chip I got installed in my PS2 so I checked my ancient emails. Found a 2003 email stating I got an official Messiah 2. Was that a good choice for that time? I still have that PS2 but I think the laser is getting weak.
RETRO GAMING ARTS I remember really looking into what chip to get back then and narrowed it down to that one. Was it a good choice for that time (2003)? And in general is it one of the top chips? Does you not having one in your collection make it safe to assume it’s currently rare?
Back then I had the DMS4 Pro installed which looked similar with its white PCB and that big Actel ProASIC Plus. A buddy then got what seems to be called "The Ripper" which is said to be a "Matrix" clone. Ah, the good old times…

Thanks for the video! But I didn't really understand where to solder the wire (SX). Should it be soldered directly to the square resistor 104? But in the diagram, the edge of another resistor, white, is marked in red
That still won't do out of region PS2 games, burned or out of region PS1 games, or any burned PS2 games without the ESR patch (which by default does not work on CD games either), but it's still far easier to do than a modchip install. If you have a hard drive, you could also use FHDB which is a direct hard drive hack that does not use space on the memory card.
Interesting wire routing. But please remember there is a minimum bend radius. Usually 5x the diameter of the jacket, otherwise you may damage the core/conductor.
I'm going to do some research on that so I understand it better, so I can still do my thing without compromising the stability of the modification, thank you

What's the wattage of your soldering iron? I heard that it should be either 15w or 25w for these type of really delicate small projects... is that true?
I use a temperature controlled soldering iron, I dont suggest the pencil tip 15w/25w/40w style irons for this type of work, those are excellent irons for learning, or just starting out, or if you need to do SOME soldering for your projects, but not alot. I typically solder all day long every day, I have 2 different irons, both temperature controlled, they have their own power supply and can range temperatures from 0-485 degrees Celsius. I typically solder at 320 celsius. I did a few videos about the tools used and other information like this, but i can always do another, more updated one

Hey RGA, i got a question. I installed a modbo 4.0 on my ps2 slim. The install went very well. Wasn't super complicated after all, just a lot of prep but that's really it. I have 2 PAL games. Evil Twin which works just fine. However, the other game, the driving factor as to why I wanted to do the mod initially, is Siren 2. I've tried multiple TVs, cables, settings, but I can't get the game to run. It'll crash during cutscenes or even the first five minutes of the game where the game crashes during the first in-engine load screen. The only way the game doesn't crash is when i set the chip to Pal 50hz but of course i get the vertical scrolling screen. Is there any workaround that you know about in order to get the game to run? I'd really appreciate any advice you can provide. Thanks in advance.
the modbo have around a 98% compatibility rate for games, theres a few games that do not work with them, try other games and let me know if they work, so that way you can rule out if its a problem with the chip or if siren 2 is just one of the few games that dont work with it
@@ThirstWorldTTV I appreciate the reply. Unfortunately i don't have any other games I can test. Is there anything else you can suggest? I've also tried burning ISO files from other PAL games and tried playing burned versions. But that didnt' work and I don't if it's because I burned it wrong of if it's the same problem. I also tried ripping the game and converting it to NTSC with a program that was almost impossible to find. And sadly that didn't work either.
@@Derik64 ok, let me get on a keyboard because I'm going to type you up a long troubble shooting techniques reply. And holy crap... let me know if my reply would make for a good video! (An idea has formed!!)
@@Derik64 **MODBO TROUBBLE SHOOTING* * First thing to note is the difference between the 2 install points on the board. The points that go to the BIOS are W, R, M, N, O, P, Q, T, U, V.. with W being the most important. Now if the doesnt properly work, it could be because of these bios points, and heres some Way's to tell if its not working. One of the first things to do before troubble shooting to much is While booting the PS2, hold TRIANGLE + CIRCLE. This will give you access to the modbo's menu. If you have access to that, your modbo is properly injecting its code into the bios. IF you get this screen, SKIP down to the CD/DVD controller part of this comment IF your MODBO install Does any of the following... 1, boots a black screen 2, booting and freezing on matrix logo 3, booting and displaying 4 red ! ! ! ! 4, ps2 boots perfectly and runs normally, but is UNMODDED it seems. (all 4 of these could also be the modbo chip having whats called 'a bad flash' meaning since they where made in china in large quantitys, they could have been programmed incorrectly and still sold) so if any of these are the issue, FIRST, examine your solder joints perfectly, make sure NOTHING is bridged and everything is the right point from the diagram. Also doubble check the Diagram with your GH-00x number. Make sure you have the CORRECT GH-00x number to your diagram, for instance, certain SCPH-xxxx number PS2's can be a certain V# , SCPH-70012 is a V12 for example. and that V12 can have multiple different GH-0xx-00 numbers. So cross reference the install diagram multiple times. IF YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN you used the correct diagram, and your solder joints are perfect remove the chip and replace with new chip . before replacing with new chip, test your PS2 as its stock, just to make sure nothing is wrong. If the PS2 is reverted back to stock and you still have issues. look for a component that may have fallen off the PS2 during the install. **FOR PAL PS2's THE "H" POINT ON THE INSTALLS IS NOT NEEDED, ONLY USE THIS POINT FOR NTSC/JAP PS2S** OK, SO, LETS SAY NONE OF THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM, Lets say your PS2 boots to the Matrix infinity menu, but you can get any media to play. That will be your CD/DVD controller points, the CD/DVD ccontroller points A, B, G, H, I. and the CD/DVD controller is that BIG chip with the super fine pitch legs. First thing you must do, to diagnose this problem, is play every type of media you can. Start with media from the region of the PS2. Lets pretend we're talking about a JAPAN ps2. 1. try Japan PS2 game 2. try NTSC/PAL game Now that you have confirmed the region works or does not work, we can move on. If the system is a JAPAN system, but will not play japanese games. Either the laser just died or every solder point needs to be doubble checked, and possibly removal of the chip, reverted back to normal, tested, and installed with a new chip. If Same region media works/other region media works. (also test ps1 region and other region) Now its time to test Burned media, Start with PS2, then do PS1. If your getting mixed results of some media working and others not working, Redo the A, B, G, H, I points, double check your solder work, and your diagram. These points are the points that control the different media that is played. So that's exactly where to check. **Some Other key points to mention** 1, the RESET point helps time the chip with the bios, to boot the chip into the bios at the correct time, so this is an important point. 2, the CX point is the clock timer, the ORIGINAL MATRIX INFINITYS had a clock timer intergrated into the FPGA's code, so the clock point was NOT NEEDED on the originals, however, the MODBOS are a chinese clone of the original matrix infinitys, and they do not use the same IC on them, they are not capable of having a clock timer inside (the crystal chips used a crystal oscillator on them for this) SO the MODBOS use the CX point, witch pulls the clock signal from the PS2 itself, If this point has interference it can throw the whole mod off. Ever seen people run wires under the legs of the CD/DVD controller chip? (i'm guilty, i've done it several times...) you should be weary of do this. 90% of the time it doesnt matter. but if there is interference on the CX point, it can throw the whole mod off. Doubble check this point if your having issues. 3, POWER/GROUND, These points should be 24 guage wire, or 26. Thick wire. These chips do not perform well when the voltage and ground wires are thin. this can cause several different issues. ok, i hope this is enough to help your issue, if not let me know, keep me posted. I also hope if anyone else is having issues they see this and it helps them!

Superglue (Cyanacrylate) hardens because of the humidity in the surrounding air. You can speed this up by blowing at the joints because the air in your lungs has a higher water amount than the surrounding air (unless you are working in a sauna). While hardening it gets similar to 2 component glues.

thank you, i still have my original ps1 with a modchip i made a video about how i got it, pretty crazy story, probably the best story i got
I think after the soft modding people pretty much gave up on modchips. Maybe that's because they stopped making them.
"cable management" with the wires is really nice, makes everything looks nice and neat and is probably way better than the whole mod itself lmao

that just made my day, i put alot of effort into all of these videos i make so to hear someone enjoys them means alot to me.. thank you so much
That Nier:Automata song at the end
You could tell the wires could have used some flux. The solder was turning chocolately especially with those first two wires on the crystal. Ever since I started building keyboards, I now appreciate flux a lot more thinking the rosin core was good enough when I didn't realize that flux burns away. Major appreciation on what you do and I am super jealous of your wiring.
same : flux rocks
Looks great and I like that Shenmue music in the background
Pure nostalgia... this takes me back 15 years to fun with a slim PS2 and a Crystal Chip... must be somewhere... will try and dig it out. I seem to remember a few vias that needed fibre glass pencil treatment... maybe that was specific to the slim version?) I approve of the 'wire management' :o)
I use the scratch pen on the slims on almost all of em. But a some revisions of ps2 fat need it too. Always a handy tool to have. Im so happy you found this video

Thanks for sharing!
if you watch my other PS2 mod video, you'll see that's exactly what i did, fingernail cutters to strip, haha, your right though, it is so much better, i really HATE burning the insulation. but since the last video had fingernail cutters i wanted to do something different for this video

superglue is a bonding agent, so in a way, yes. it does have some adhesive to it but it is primarily a bonding agent.
That's a really nice looking PS2!

you put my modded ps2 to shame, that cable management is amazing man
hahaha, thank you but if your ps2 mod works than its just as good as mine
nice wiring! really pleasing to see.
I'm really happy you enjoyed, This isn't even my best work. But i'm really happy with it. Lots more to come on my channel
You my friend, are an artist! I will use this if you don't mind, as a tutorial reference guide!! Thanks!!!
Thank you so much, I'm really really happy you enjoyed. That's my goal!
superglue absorbs water to cure, it is a form of acrylic resin once in contact with water or humid air it starts forming a plastic mesh.
also why it loves to bond your fingers to stuff or together, and if you ever get your hands on the special medical superglue.
on a side note, one of my co-workers gave me his old original chipped Playstation, i know his soldering methods, so i stripped it open and re wired it .. he used wire from an old mains cable!
Witch is very few mods
love your wiring work, wouldn't mind having that kind of work in my ps2

FreeMCBoot, Network Adapter, Harddisk, done ;-)
But your work looks pretty cool :-)
That still won't do out of region PS2 games, burned or out of region PS1 games, or any burned PS2 games without the ESR patch (which by default does not work on CD games either), but it's still far easier to do than a modchip install. If you have a hard drive, you could also use FHDB which is a direct hard drive hack that does not use space on the memory card.
Interesting wire routing. But please remember there is a minimum bend radius. Usually 5x the diameter of the jacket, otherwise you may damage the core/conductor.
I'm going to do some research on that so I understand it better, so I can still do my thing without compromising the stability of the modification, thank you
Where do you get a crystal chip nowadays?

While booting the PS2, hold TRIANGLE + CIRCLE. This will give you access to the modbo's menu. If you have access to that, your modbo is properly injecting its code into the bios. IF you get this screen, SKIP down to the CD/DVD controller part of this comment
IF your MODBO install
Does any of the following...
1, boots a black screen
2, booting and freezing on matrix logo
3, booting and displaying 4 red ! ! ! !
4, ps2 boots perfectly and runs normally, but is UNMODDED it seems.
(all 4 of these could also be the modbo chip having whats called 'a bad flash' meaning since they where made in china in large quantitys, they could have been programmed incorrectly and still sold)
so if any of these are the issue, FIRST, examine your solder joints perfectly, make sure NOTHING is bridged and everything is the right point from the diagram.
IF YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN you used the correct diagram, and your solder joints are perfect remove the chip and replace with new chip
. before replacing with new chip, test your PS2 as its stock, just to make sure nothing is wrong. If the PS2 is reverted back to stock and you still have issues. look for a component that may have fallen off the PS2 during the install.
**FOR PAL PS2's THE "H" POINT ON THE INSTALLS IS NOT NEEDED, ONLY USE THIS POINT FOR NTSC/JAP PS2S**
OK, SO, LETS SAY NONE OF THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM, Lets say your PS2 boots to the Matrix infinity menu, but you can get any media to play.
1. try Japan PS2 game
2. try NTSC/PAL game
Now that you have confirmed the region works or does not work, we can move on. If the system is a JAPAN system, but will not play japanese games. Either the laser just died or every solder point needs to be doubble checked, and possibly removal of the chip, reverted back to normal, tested, and installed with a new chip.
If Same region media works/other region media works. (also test ps1 region and other region)
Now its time to test Burned media, Start with PS2, then do PS1.
If your getting mixed results of some media working and others not working, Redo the A, B, G, H, I points, double check your solder work, and your diagram.
These points are the points that control the different media that is played. So that's exactly where to check.
**Some Other key points to mention**
1, the RESET point helps time the chip with the bios, to boot the chip into the bios at the correct time, so this is an important point.
I also hope if anyone else is having issues they see this and it helps them!
and yeah you hit it on the super glue. it is also a medical tool. i got to get some too. cut open the tip of my thumb at work.
cuz it can bind skin together too? lol
@@ThirstWorldTTV lol yeah, and beats waiting in a emergancy room for 3 hours. last time i was in the hospital was for when i cut my pinkie down to the bone. the numbing medicine wore off so i got to experiance the pain full hand, those slow bastards lol. i learned from a guy at work who was going to school for nursing, that it was used in vietnam. i think its called cyanoacrylate.
I'd love a video about the different chips and how to determine which one to use and which ones are still available
Its in the works
if you wanna see some nice wire management, just look at some of the old vacuum tube gear!
Wow. That's awesome !
thanks yo
