Burning a disc that is bootable by a game console is indeed the "holy grail" of modding techniques. This discovery would have been huge back in the day. Reminds me of the Dreamcast exploits.
really makes me wonder why it took 20 years for someone to find this. this is such an obvious way in, and DVD was cracked wide open by the time the PS2 became a thing. a basically free software hack would've been nice back in the day. i wonder if any other consoles have exploitable stuff in their media players, especially the 360...

@@garystinten9339 i see potential... as system apps they might give you more access compared to a savegame hack or something. looking at the og xbox leak, the DVD code isn't even microsoft's, it's by STM, so assuming it carried over to the 360 there could be weaker code there. for later consoles, blu rays are waay more complex and basically run java, so lots of attack surface there. as far as i'm aware it's an unexplored attack vector really, maybe it has something, maybe it doesn't.

That one still blows my mind to this day. I remember when it first happened and it was revealed everyone that was a member of the M33 (was that the name?) hacking team were major PSP Hackers that we all knew and respected, but it turns out they were all secretly working together under pseudonyms!!! The hack itself was amazing. A battery based hack using the method Sony used to repair softlocked PSPs. Just amazing. Something nobody would have ever guessed. The variety of soft hacking methods is astonishing when you think back. It's not just classic USB transfer files across to hack. Battery hack on PSP. Memory card swap on PSP. Game based hacks. Network based on Vita and WiiU. USB boot based on PS3. JoyCon on Switch. Disc swap on PS2 to install Memory Card exploit. Now we have normal DVD exploit on PS2.
I bought a device to change my battery into one and put it into service mode and mod it. And once it was, the PSP became simply incredible and Sony couldnt do anything about it. Those were great times.
When I was opening up the PSP battery casing to crush that one pin, I accidentally pierced the battery with an x-acto knife **very specifically trying not to** pierce the battery with an x-acto knife. Nothing dangerous happened besides a little hiss from it (and whatever carcinogens I inhaled), but I had to swing the dead battery's circuit board around for the CFW install and keep it pressed into the contacts while it installed. Kind of harrowing. Good times!
Kind of, but you still needed a CFW to produce the battery in the first place. This PS2 exploit is insane though -- just one file on a burnt disc to blow the console wide open from stock. I'm curious to see what kind of softmodding this opens up.

You can actually run PS2 games on ANY PS3, even the non backwards compatible ones with multiMAN. Just putting it out there as it might be a pain to burn discs for some people. I haven't really touched my freemcboot/PS2 since then. Speed isn't really an issue either even though the slims can't run the PS2 games natively, worked much better than PCSX2 for me
5:07 You absolutely DO NOT need a modded system to generate a Free McBoot memory card. All you need to do is the disk swap trick which you can do very easily on fat PS2s without opening the console. You can also buy memory cards with a USB port or memory card to USB adapters to load the files onto it.

5:00 I hate to be nit picky, but I'll leave this for anyone using/going to use Free McBoot. I'd recommend that you configure Free McBoot to run off of Memory Card slot 2 rather than 1. The reason being that quite a few PS2 games default to saving onto Card 1 and have no support for Card 2. Play a few of those games with Free McBoot on Card 1 and you'll be out of space real fast.
To this day, the PS2 is still my favorite console of all time. I had my start as far back as the Atari 2600, then on to a 7800, a NES and then SNES. By the late 1990s, I got into the Playstation. All those consoles to that point were used. The PS1 was what got me into 3d games and wanting more realism in games and more mature titles. So, when the Playstation 2 was announced, that was my first, and to date only, brand new console I ever owned. I put a PS2 on layaway about 6 months after initial release, paid it off and it was GLORIOUS! I miss my PS2, but consoles now just do not really excite me. The PS3 was nice, my roommates and I still have an early PS3 with the full PS2 hardware inside, but it needs to be repaired, the PS4 and now the PS5, really do not excite me. These days, I stick to PC gaming. However, I would love to have a PS2 again and a SNES. I am glad to see that this exploit has been found finally. I may just have to find myself another PS2......
i agree ps4 & ps5 are boring. For me that excited me and was the best gaming years for me was the N64, PS2 and early Xbox 360 era. Nowadays modern gaming doesn't excite me anymore
Don't waste time burning dvd's. OPL with SMB (or an HDD in a fat) is the best way to play and preserve your Ps2. The only DVD you need to burn is one that will allow you to install the homebrews on you memory card.
@@Fricardo11 the method I used way back when, yiu didn't even need to burn a DVD to install it. It's been so long, but there was a program/disc that allowed you to backup and restore from a USB thumb drive. You put the special file onto the thumb drive and restored it to your memory card (it was a 32MB card if I'm not mistaken) and it allowed the exploit to work. This was before the FreeMCBoot EDIT: It involved a PS1 game for the exploit. It was called the PS2 Independence Exploit
@@MarkARoutt Unfortunately there's nothing to stop the streaming platform from going out of business, or to stop carrying the film, or to update to a modified/edited "PC" version of the film. Owning digital only means you only own the right to access it on their system as long as they choose to carry it. It doesn't guarantee us the right to a particular version of the film. I had a digital copy of the Battle of the Five Armies and when the platform it was on (Ultraviolet) went under, the digital copy was gone. I had transferred everything over to VUDU before this happened, but it got lost in the shuffle. The only way I can get it back is to buy it again, or email Warner Media and plead my case. I have the Blu-Ray and DVD, so I haven't bothered, but just to illustrate that it can (and does) happen with something you technically own.
This sounds like I could resurrect the PS2 at my mother's house. She's been using it as her DVD (mostly bootleg movies) player for at least 15 years. Will be nice to just pop a bootleg game DVD in there without modding just like she's been popping movies for more than a decade

@@joshua7426 Yup, I never chipped a PS2 in my life, used to be able to exploit by booting to a ps1 game with an exploited save file, then use that to launch custom elfs to do a disc swap trick. No chipping required, just a ps1 game (I used Mega Man X5), a PS2 game with a large "TOC" file, (DMC1 worked perfectly for this), and a fliptop.
@@geniedumal2974 Yeah this is great news on that, but I just meant that you didn't always have to chip your system to do so. It's a bit of a slap to the devs that made chipless exploits available to say that it took 20 years to get to that point.
This is really cool. I can see another use of this, other than charging FreeMcboot or backups. Since it can run homebrew, this exploit open the door to new, easy commercial release of games for the PS2, in the vein of what we see for older, cartridge based console. With this, everybody can create a game and easily make it run on stock PS2s.

Never had much consoles when growing up, only my DS, and closest to homebrew I've ever been was with the R4 cards. Still I'm hoping that someday I can buy consoles like this, "mod" them to my heart's content and live the childhood I wish I had. It's cool!

This is really cool. To me, it means that homebrew and unlicensed games from the 8 and 16-bit era can be burned to disc and ran on PS2 with emulators. That opens up a huge market for those developers, and I hope they capitalize on it.
Lol Dreamcast piracy was out of control. Even as a kid I knew it was bad for Sega. Most of the kids I knew just didn't buy Dreamcast games lol. There was guy at local pawn shop selling bootlegs for $5 a pop. Had every single release.
Jay Rivera and now those original copies are worth 80-200$ a pop. So if you did buy a Dreamcast you have one heck of a value and one hell of a console.
PSX: I am broken. (Not to be confused with the Fat Ps1 I was talking about the DVR made by Sony that had a PS2 built in it. They break super easily and are badly built.)
Open it and clean the lazer with a cotton soft cloth. While open put game inside see if it sorts the problem. If not Four screws around the cd-rom first tighten them then try game again. Still not sorted try loosening (4screws) not fully but a bit then try game agian. Should work if not new reader or ps2 of ebay.
Suman Roy The laser deck (laser, worm motor, spindle motor, and base) is about $30+ or so dollars on ebay. Find out your ps2 model number first. You can also find parts on richspsxparts.com. Its not hard to install on your own.
I made my own Free Mcboot Memory card using my Swapset Dvd/cd (Swapmagic) and usb stick(old one so the ps2 recognizes it). I did it without a modchip ^^
I'm just here because I miss the golden ages of gaming , hanging out with my cousins and spending the night playing games , no DLC the game was complete when you first bought it upon release , leaving the PS2 on forever till you got your hands on a memory card good times man good times.
Same here, lots of good games to play with a second person back then. Streets of Rage, Super Double Dragon, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, The Raiden Project 1 and 2, Power Stone, Legend of the Mystical Ninja (faaaantasticly good games all of em) and I could go on for days lol.
Amazing how it took 20 years for someone to try this out, now that I think about it the DVD drive would make sense to try to find an exploit with it especially since DVD players were still relatively new at the time.
You can use PS2 Fortuna Project to load OPL in consoles without chip but still need to put the files on the mc. Some friend with unlauchelf can do it for you

This is great news and pretty cool! Regarding newer firmware exploits, I feel like they're going to get more complicated on more recent systems, because there are systems in place like stack smashing protection, position-independent code and the likes that make exploitation much harder. We don't rely on programmers to secure their software that much anymore (thankfully - to err is human after all). If anything, the release of this exploit could be the event that triggers OEMs to use safer compilation flags for their code... but I suspect this has been the case for a while.
What was normal was to buy PS2 witht eh Matrix chip already installed. Most people here never bought an official PS2, just a version already modded on the 'grey market' and most had no idea about that and just thought it was normal to pay so low for games.
Do you people not grasp that every alternative you keep mentioning costs money? A blank DVD costs pennies. Your adapter does not, your pre-made FreeMcBoot memory card does not, your mod chip does not. And with every passing day as this gen gets older and older your alternatives get more and more expensive.

@@Xathian I'm just clarifying that this new method is not such an enormous deal if you have a fat ps2. And if you have a fat ps2 you want to install an internal hdd anyway, using dvd's on fat ps2 is not the brightest idea.
FreeMCBoot Memory Cards are actually easy to get hold of, and once you have it, you can make more. However. would be interesting to see if this runs on the 90xxx series

@@themriron2391 GameShark and other utility discs allow you to copy payloads to a memory card. You can also use a PS3 with a memory card adapter. You could also use the disc swap trick to load an install utility from a burned disc. All 3 options are easy and readily available.
Yeah. It was pretty freakin easy. Order James bond game. Modify game files of disc. Copy modified version to new disc. Beat first mission hotswap in loading screen for second mission. Boom into file explorer. Then open freemcboot installer.elf. Bip bop boom it's done. Stupid easy
I think he meant there is no easy way or any way with special requirements (such as the AR MAX which not everybody has or a FMCB card or another modded console)
I got a used copy of Codebreaker 8.0 at Game Stop a few days after FMB was new, but that was because I heard that the current 9.0 removed whatever feature was needed to copy the files to the card. Interesting if it actually did work.

We were playing copied PS2 games without a mod chip years ago. An Action Replay disc and some bits of metal or plastic, or even a couple of drinking straws from juice boxes.
5:00 I ask myself the same thing and I believe for FMB you don't need a modded system, All you need is the memory card modded with FMB and ESR installed and patch your back up before burn it (easy process) and work Most of PS2 systems. Once you remove the MC your system still normal ,You only need to modify others files if you need other things like boot games from usb or HDD in the case you need to create some folders in the HDD/FD to boot from there and other program installed like HD loader or I'm wrong? not sure but from what I remember back in the days that's what i did it. also you can do the swap trick but not recommended , put something into the laser like the ps1 era. Still I think this is HUGE NEWS.
@@stevemclovin1566 That's part of the process to install FMB I'm not talking about it, Plus you can do that on your PC. If you already have the memory card with FMB you can use on basically any system that support it, not Swap magic disc needed at all or modded system in order to run back ups.
@@stevemclovin1566 To go a bit more into just so you know, You don't need the system (PS2) And Swap Disc to install FMB no even for the first time, Like I said all you need is a PC, download the files , use a ps controllers port and adapter it to usb (Back in the days I used My ps1 port in order to use ps1 original controllers and mem cards in to pc ) and the bios of the same as your system and install via pc-emulator. Also you can do swap trick.

Yes! When I was a kid my dad had bought me a ps2 as a welcome gift to the usa! I played it so much. But whats different with it, was how much I used it for disks in general. My dad had a big disk collection of burnt CDs from a friend of his that had created some animated shows and movies, as well as some my dad burned on that were popular back then. He put them all in a nice little plastic disk holder which I still have, and I would always watch something on my ps2 with the disks. I had to sell all my old consoles in middle school in order to be able to afford building a computer, but my biggest regret will forever be selling my ps2 grey slim. I miss you buddy.

Nice! It's always cool to see new and easier mods for the PS2. For over 15 years I've been using the HD Coder CD and DVD on my flip top fat PS2 to boot to the internal 500gb HD via the network adaptor. Although it can play burned CDs and DVDs, I just rip them to the HD then choose a game to play from the menu list. It was a great setup to have back when Blockbuster was around renting games! Rent and rip!
@@MrDwadi84 will still have to be installed on each card. it can not be copied. you would still have to run the FMCB installer ELF from the DVD to then encrypt FMCB to the card.

This is HUGE. I remember how much of a process it was to get Free McBoot installed, what with disassembly, disc swapping, finding the right USB drive....
"...Free McBoot needs a modified PS2..." Well, not sure about that. I have been able to create my own Free McBoot memory card by using a PC, the correct software and a USB to SATA adapter and following a simpler guide. Also Free McBoot allows you to play games from an HDD too, which is exactly what I am doing now and without the need of the memory card. That said, I think this new exploit is a big thing, especially for those who only have a PS2 Slim. Also more is better than less in these cases! :-)

lol, i bought a free mcboot memory card a few months back specifically for Haunting Ground and other survival horror rarities. Free McBoot memory cards are available on amazon for cheap. Totally worth it if you've been considering it.

Since the exploit allows elf binaries to load something like this shouldn’t be too hard, you just burn the freemcboot installer onto a disc

That one still blows my mind to this day. I remember when it first happened and it was revealed everyone that was a member of the M33 (was that the name?) hacking team were major PSP Hackers that we all knew and respected, but it turns out they were all secretly working together under pseudonyms!!!
The hack itself was amazing. A battery based hack using the method Sony used to repair softlocked PSPs. Just amazing. Something nobody would have ever guessed.
The variety of soft hacking methods is astonishing when you think back. It's not just classic USB transfer files across to hack.
Battery hack on PSP. Memory card swap on PSP. Game based hacks. Network based on Vita and WiiU. USB boot based on PS3. JoyCon on Switch. Disc swap on PS2 to install Memory Card exploit. Now we have normal DVD exploit on PS2.
I bought a device to change my battery into one and put it into service mode and mod it. And once it was, the PSP became simply incredible and Sony couldnt do anything about it.
Those were great times.
When I was opening up the PSP battery casing to crush that one pin, I accidentally pierced the battery with an x-acto knife **very specifically trying not to** pierce the battery with an x-acto knife. Nothing dangerous happened besides a little hiss from it (and whatever carcinogens I inhaled), but I had to swing the dead battery's circuit board around for the CFW install and keep it pressed into the contacts while it installed. Kind of harrowing. Good times!
Kind of, but you still needed a CFW to produce the battery in the first place. This PS2 exploit is insane though -- just one file on a burnt disc to blow the console wide open from stock. I'm curious to see what kind of softmodding this opens up.

You can actually run PS2 games on ANY PS3, even the non backwards compatible ones with multiMAN. Just putting it out there as it might be a pain to burn discs for some people. I haven't really touched my freemcboot/PS2 since then.
Speed isn't really an issue either even though the slims can't run the PS2 games natively, worked much better than PCSX2 for me
5:07 You absolutely DO NOT need a modded system to generate a Free McBoot memory card. All you need to do is the disk swap trick which you can do very easily on fat PS2s without opening the console. You can also buy memory cards with a USB port or memory card to USB adapters to load the files onto it.

5:00 I hate to be nit picky, but I'll leave this for anyone using/going to use Free McBoot.
I'd recommend that you configure Free McBoot to run off of Memory Card slot 2 rather than 1. The reason being that quite a few PS2 games default to saving onto Card 1 and have no support for Card 2. Play a few of those games with Free McBoot on Card 1 and you'll be out of space real fast.
I always pull the card out as soon as the game starts to load and then replace it with a card I use for game saves only.
Alternatively, use OPL for your legally owned copies and set it to use a virtual memory card on a USB or Hard drive.

To this day, the PS2 is still my favorite console of all time. I had my start as far back as the Atari 2600, then on to a 7800, a NES and then SNES. By the late 1990s, I got into the Playstation. All those consoles to that point were used. The PS1 was what got me into 3d games and wanting more realism in games and more mature titles. So, when the Playstation 2 was announced, that was my first, and to date only, brand new console I ever owned. I put a PS2 on layaway about 6 months after initial release, paid it off and it was GLORIOUS! I miss my PS2, but consoles now just do not really excite me. The PS3 was nice, my roommates and I still have an early PS3 with the full PS2 hardware inside, but it needs to be repaired, the PS4 and now the PS5, really do not excite me. These days, I stick to PC gaming. However, I would love to have a PS2 again and a SNES. I am glad to see that this exploit has been found finally. I may just have to find myself another PS2......

Don't waste time burning dvd's. OPL with SMB (or an HDD in a fat) is the best way to play and preserve your Ps2.
The only DVD you need to burn is one that will allow you to install the homebrews on you memory card.
@@Fricardo11 the method I used way back when, yiu didn't even need to burn a DVD to install it. It's been so long, but there was a program/disc that allowed you to backup and restore from a USB thumb drive. You put the special file onto the thumb drive and restored it to your memory card (it was a 32MB card if I'm not mistaken) and it allowed the exploit to work. This was before the FreeMCBoot
EDIT: It involved a PS1 game for the exploit. It was called the PS2 Independence Exploit

@@MarkARoutt Unfortunately there's nothing to stop the streaming platform from going out of business, or to stop carrying the film, or to update to a modified/edited "PC" version of the film. Owning digital only means you only own the right to access it on their system as long as they choose to carry it. It doesn't guarantee us the right to a particular version of the film. I had a digital copy of the Battle of the Five Armies and when the platform it was on (Ultraviolet) went under, the digital copy was gone. I had transferred everything over to VUDU before this happened, but it got lost in the shuffle. The only way I can get it back is to buy it again, or email Warner Media and plead my case. I have the Blu-Ray and DVD, so I haven't bothered, but just to illustrate that it can (and does) happen with something you technically own.

@@joshua7426 Yup, I never chipped a PS2 in my life, used to be able to exploit by booting to a ps1 game with an exploited save file, then use that to launch custom elfs to do a disc swap trick. No chipping required, just a ps1 game (I used Mega Man X5), a PS2 game with a large "TOC" file, (DMC1 worked perfectly for this), and a fliptop.
Nintendo would be like: "OK, time to send our team of ninja... I mean lawyers after that dude".

This is really cool. I can see another use of this, other than charging FreeMcboot or backups. Since it can run homebrew, this exploit open the door to new, easy commercial release of games for the PS2, in the vein of what we see for older, cartridge based console. With this, everybody can create a game and easily make it run on stock PS2s.

Open it and clean the lazer with a cotton soft cloth. While open put game inside see if it sorts the problem. If not Four screws around the cd-rom first tighten them then try game again. Still not sorted try loosening (4screws) not fully but a bit then try game agian. Should work if not new reader or ps2 of ebay.
Or use network to load games with OPL. It's simpler than you expect.
It's a kinda hard mod, but you can make it run from an HDD.

I made my own Free Mcboot Memory card using my Swapset Dvd/cd (Swapmagic) and usb stick(old one so the ps2 recognizes it). I did it without a modchip ^^
I made my own too, using MGS 3 Snake Eater i bought for 5 euros, to do the swaptrick with.
I can finally sell my copy of 007: Agent Under Fire.

This is great news and pretty cool! Regarding newer firmware exploits, I feel like they're going to get more complicated on more recent systems, because there are systems in place like stack smashing protection, position-independent code and the likes that make exploitation much harder. We don't rely on programmers to secure their software that much anymore (thankfully - to err is human after all). If anything, the release of this exploit could be the event that triggers OEMs to use safer compilation flags for their code... but I suspect this has been the case for a while.
In LatinAmerica this was completely normal since the games were too expensive to buy.
In Russia we has pre install mod chip in all PS1 console. And piracy was normal too.
What was normal was to buy PS2 witht eh Matrix chip already installed. Most people here never bought an official PS2, just a version already modded on the 'grey market' and most had no idea about that and just thought it was normal to pay so low for games.
Using the official PS2 memory card usb adapter for PS3 you can make a freemcboot memory card easily using either your PS3 or PC.
not to mention that if you have a fat ps2 you can just install browser 2.0 or freehdboot to the hdd instead.
no need for an already modded system.
Do you people not grasp that every alternative you keep mentioning costs money? A blank DVD costs pennies. Your adapter does not, your pre-made FreeMcBoot memory card does not, your mod chip does not. And with every passing day as this gen gets older and older your alternatives get more and more expensive.

FreeMCBoot does not need a modified system at any point. Getting from a brand new PS2 to FMCB has never required hardware modification.
So your PS2 is able to hotswap without a hardware modification? Without tracking down a GameShark or AR disc it is a prerequisite

Yeah. It was pretty freakin easy. Order James bond game. Modify game files of disc. Copy modified version to new disc. Beat first mission hotswap in loading screen for second mission. Boom into file explorer. Then open freemcboot installer.elf. Bip bop boom it's done. Stupid easy

Free MCBoot doesn't actually require a modded system to be "installed" in a memory card. For example I used an Action Replay MAX and a USB pendrive.

i remember i try using Action Replay Max to exploit to put FreeMCBoot but it didn't work so i use Codebreaker 9.0 to exploit and it was long time ago
I got a used copy of Codebreaker 8.0 at Game Stop a few days after FMB was new, but that was because I heard that the current 9.0 removed whatever feature was needed to copy the files to the card. Interesting if it actually did work.

This feels like an unsolved Easter Egg got finally found.
We were playing copied PS2 games without a mod chip years ago. An Action Replay disc and some bits of metal or plastic, or even a couple of drinking straws from juice boxes.
5:00 I ask myself the same thing and I believe for FMB you don't need a modded system, All you need is the memory card modded with FMB and ESR installed and patch your back up before burn it (easy process) and work Most of PS2 systems. Once you remove the MC your system still normal ,You only need to modify others files if you need other things like boot games from usb or HDD in the case you need to create some folders in the HDD/FD to boot from there and other program installed like HD loader or I'm wrong? not sure but from what I remember back in the days that's what i did it. also you can do the swap trick but not recommended , put something into the laser like the ps1 era. Still I think this is HUGE NEWS.
You do need swap magic to boot to it the first time.
@@stevemclovin1566 That's part of the process to install FMB I'm not talking about it, Plus you can do that on your PC. If you already have the memory card with FMB you can use on basically any system that support it, not Swap magic disc needed at all or modded system in order to run back ups.
@@stevemclovin1566 To go a bit more into just so you know, You don't need the system (PS2) And Swap Disc to install FMB no even for the first time, Like I said all you need is a PC, download the files , use a ps controllers port and adapter it to usb (Back in the days I used My ps1 port in order to use ps1 original controllers and mem cards in to pc ) and the bios of the same as your system and install via pc-emulator. Also you can do swap trick.
@@stevemclovin1566 You don't need swap magic. I used a credit card cut into the right shape to swap from a valid Agent Under Fire disc to a burned disc with the exploit patched in.

Yes! When I was a kid my dad had bought me a ps2 as a welcome gift to the usa! I played it so much. But whats different with it, was how much I used it for disks in general. My dad had a big disk collection of burnt CDs from a friend of his that had created some animated shows and movies, as well as some my dad burned on that were popular back then. He put them all in a nice little plastic disk holder which I still have, and I would always watch something on my ps2 with the disks. I had to sell all my old consoles in middle school in order to be able to afford building a computer, but my biggest regret will forever be selling my ps2 grey slim. I miss you buddy.

The OG Xbox needs the dvd playback kit to play DVDs unmodified, so I wonder if that would only let people with the kit run an exploit like this

It might not be worth it on original Xbox. The softmod for the system works fantastic. On PS2, not all games work on the softmod.

Nice! It's always cool to see new and easier mods for the PS2. For over 15 years I've been using the HD Coder CD and DVD on my flip top fat PS2 to boot to the internal 500gb HD via the network adaptor. Although it can play burned CDs and DVDs, I just rip them to the HD then choose a game to play from the menu list. It was a great setup to have back when Blockbuster was around renting games! Rent and rip!

indask8 i think it will be possible if fmcb payload are prepared. Huge stuff, maybe I revisit my old PS2.
@@MrDwadi84 will still have to be installed on each card. it can not be copied. you would still have to run the FMCB installer ELF from the DVD to then encrypt FMCB to the card.

Preflashed cards years back was expensive, I have original card that I bought with this, with lots of custom stuff. Wondering if suh thing will be possible to GameCube without Xeno or sth...maybe some day ;]
This is HUGE. I remember how much of a process it was to get Free McBoot installed, what with disassembly, disc swapping, finding the right USB drive....

Well, not sure about that. I have been able to create my own Free McBoot memory card by using a PC, the correct software and a USB to SATA adapter and following a simpler guide.
Also Free McBoot allows you to play games from an HDD too, which is exactly what I am doing now and without the need of the memory card.
That said, I think this new exploit is a big thing, especially for those who only have a PS2 Slim. Also more is better than less in these cases! :-)
Yo i might sound stupid here but i got a free mcboot memory card, can i play isos with that? I got it when i was younger and was never explained what it was exactly

Yeah, Kuon, Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground. These are all over 100 dollars. It would be exciting to download and play these without breaking the bank.
