Started selling in 2008, it was fantastic, its been a steady downward spiral fueled by greed. They have no real competition, its time for a new platform....
I"m 3 months into my Etsy shop selling my art in various formats, digital 80% and print on demand 10% and as cross stitch/embroidery patterns 10%. The model is working and my sales are growing well. So Etsy is changing, and people have to pivot. If the profit margin on a product is too low, you must pivot an do something that has a larger profit margin. My purely digital items have around an 80% profit margin, and even my print on demand items have a 25-35% profit margin. There's no point in products that have margins lower than that as they waste your time.

I’m glad to here a fellow artist doing well. I always see mfs complaining about Etsy when 9 times out a ten they probably took 2 minutes creating a design
I got on Etsy when they first started, and at that time, there were lots of people reporting you without cause, and Etsy would listen to them and suspend their accounts, which they did to me ever since I started my own website and monetize my site which is doing great. I would recommend that you find an option to put your items on so that no one can take them down.

As long as Etsy continues to let small shops sell trademarked items and things that clearly don't even belong on Etsy while charging us ridiculous fees and refusing to have any kind of decent support for sellers... Small shops are never going to be able to get ahead. Etsy started as a place for homemade items and it was great. Then they moved to supplies, but that was okay too... After all, we need to buy supplies to make the homemade They started allowing vintage items but again, that's not so bad. Now it's an absolute free for all and it's almost as if they really don't care what they sell as long as they make enough money off of it. They'll let a shop sell half a million dollars worth of counterfeit Disney but if a small shop sells a $20 Disney headband, they are shut down immediately. I personally don't think people should be selling trademarked items unless they truly own the trademark but if you're going to shut down the small shops for doing it, you need to shut down the big shops.
It's disgusting what Etsy became! I have sold on Etsy for 7 years with tons of five star reviews and just the other day they started putting a reserve on my account!

There are a number of sellers doing well on Etsy - like me. I'm willing to give up 20-30% of the sale for the number of potential buyers they bring on - and at the same time, I'm building my social media, driving people to my website to purchase, etc. There's no one right or wrong answer to this - but telling people "You Should Too" is ridiculous. Use it if it works, try something else if it doesn't - but it DOES work for many of us. Obviously we figured it out for us. Do the same, or try something else...
I feel the same way. I went to my own site recently and I had hardly any sales. I ended up closing and went back to Etsy. It can be a bit easier on Etsy than our own site.
Lol, I'm just a buyer and they just suspended my account for no reason, even with a valid debit card with money in the account, charged my account then canceled the order for no reason, and it was etsy not the seller. I guess they don't want my business.
You can sell locally like I do in a booth in a vintage mall. But I pay $125/mo rent (basic booth but I can add and drop spaces as needed) plus 10% off the top of sales to my mall. I also have to do social media etc to encourage traffic. Then there's materials and labor. Taxes. No platform is perfect or super high profit.
I've been disenchanted with Etsy results for several years now. (I do POD and hand made signs) Have always wanted to build an independent store of some kind to replace it. But alas, I am more artist, less techie! Don't know how or where to begin to build a store. Even more stymied about how to drive traffic, etc. But I must say, you have given me hope and something to think about. Love your teaching style. look forward to more of your content. As soon as they started messing around with it I stopped selling. Also, have you seen the price of vintage clothes? Stuff you could get in a thrift store for a few dollars. Etsy has convinced the sellers that vintage is antique?
Interesting examples! I don't want to give Etsy anything! I won't be putting anything on that platform. Instead I'm looking to set up my own e-commerce store. One of my free social media platforms had 6.7m monthly views but is now down to 3.5m because of the algorithms and sticking around that figure. I haven't posted anything since before Xmas! If I can pull a fraction of those viewers into customers that would be great. It is what I will be concentrating on. I produce books so beholden to other biz platforms but I also will be creating digital downloads. I'm a lapsed graphic designer and started over after a 5 year break! I have only maintained my social media and that is joke as it is all tricked with relevant keywords and knowing what is currently trending!

Here in California, you have to have a lot of money to rent spaces like "your own store, or corner in a department store." Completely unreasonable. I believe, this new generation is not so interested in quality, unique and handmade items, like past generations. Mass produced, low quality, cheaply priced items are what this generation wants and Etsy is giving it to them. True artisans are becoming a thing of days gone by, sadly.

All these sites are the same. They want to grow their business. Even Ebay have started doing this. The more people upload the better it is for them. This is the reason why people upload hundreds of videos to youtube that are basically all the same.
You do not need to post item everyday... Just post when you can it's fine, it will just take you longer to see more traffic but in the long it will pay out... Just like every business model quality over quantity...take your time and post better looking listing do not rush trying to post everyday

The very premise of your case study product profit margin example would mean that someone selling a product for $50 and spending 4 hours to create and ship the item would only be making like $8.50 an hour even if the entire sale price went to them without any fees... Anyone who would sell an item for $50 that took them 4 hours to create needs to completely rethink what they're selling and their marketing...
Aside from the outside listing fees every complaint you listed is a "you problem". Etsy was not designed to sell your merchandise. Etsy is a mere marketplace for people to set up shop. It's up to the seller to learn how to make merchandise that can be produced and priced so they can be profitable. Sellers get quite a bit for the percentage they pay on these venues. Etsy provides a marketplace and handles a lot of issues that most people don't have the time for nor the knowledge. Individual state taxation, for example, or the constant changing legalities that plague sellers. Site maintenance alone is worth the cost. Running a business cost money and I can tell you Etsy is probably one of the most cost effective methods of doing so.
Sorry but this video missed the mark in so many ways. One; it's still cheaper than any other platform. Two; she talks about having your own store. This is laughable. If you have your own online store you'll end up spending more time and money trying to get the same amount of traction as Etsy brings. If you have your own brick and morter store you'll surely be paying more in overhead (rent, utilities, etc). Three; pricing... Pricing seems to get everyone. If you're taking four hours to make a product then price it ACCORDINGLY! What she's talking about is the race to the bottom. Ignore everyone else's prices. PERIOD! There will always be someone priced high and lower than you. Stay in your lane, figure out what you're product and YOU, yourself are worth per hour. Sure customers will go elsewhere you can't be worried about grabbing every customer out there. Use your social media accordingly, it takes time but if you have a good product they will come. One of my stores is stickers. Sure there's stores that sell stickers for $2 where mine cost $6-$7 but guess what... I'm still here getting repeat customers while the $2 store is no longer around. when the barrier to entry is low, the competition is high. If you manufactured bionic eyeballs or quantum chips you wouldn't be competing with 45,000 at home moms and your neighbour. Most ppl selling their wares online have little to no specialized skills, they make stuff that anyone can make and spend all their time on marketing aspects. Its a downward spiral. And if someone manages to hit the jackpot selling whatever trinket or digital product, next year its a crammed market with everyone else doing it, and their once profitable business is now bust. In other words its nothing to do with etsy and everything to do with all the ppl competing with similar products for the same online market share, looking for fast easy money. The only way i see out of it is to either make something that has a higher barrier to entry and won't be flooded with knockoffs and variations in a few months, or sell in places that most other sellers aren't willing to go(eg real life)

Don't think you can easily sell on your own. Your own site will be tough. Etsy is still very good compared to other marketplaces. Like anything else, jewelry, t-shirts, etc will be saturated.

I am quitting etsy as a shopper. The attitude and arrogance of some sellers got to a ridiculous and unacceptable point. Many sellers have no clue how to deal with complaints politely or when they supposed to do a refund, they argue and fight. Im done with it. I wanted to support small businesses but i got sick of fighting and dealing with customer service. I'm back on Amazon and I'd rather support amazon than small businesses on etsy. You should make a video and educate business owners how to be professional. Many of my friends got back to amazon for the same reason.
Too many buyers want Amazon or Walmart treatment and prices and behave as such. When I was a seller, I didn't entertain nonsense complaints from buyers.

thats part of her point...to stay competitive on etsy, the seller had to lower their price to $50
Aside from the outside listing fees every complaint you listed is a "you problem". Etsy was not designed to sell your merchandise. Etsy is a mere marketplace for people to set up shop. It's up to the seller to learn how to make merchandise that can be produced and priced so they can be profitable.
Sellers get quite a bit for the percentage they pay on these venues. Etsy provides a marketplace and handles a lot of issues that most people don't have the time for nor the knowledge. Individual state taxation, for example, or the constant changing legalities that plague sellers. Site maintenance alone is worth the cost. Running a business cost money and I can tell you Etsy is probably one of the most cost effective methods of doing so.
I the last month I have had 4 figure sales with net gross profits of 90%--no problem here.
Sorry but this video missed the mark in so many ways. One; it's still cheaper than any other platform. Two; she talks about having your own store. This is laughable. If you have your own online store you'll end up spending more time and money trying to get the same amount of traction as Etsy brings. If you have your own brick and morter store you'll surely be paying more in overhead (rent, utilities, etc). Three; pricing... Pricing seems to get everyone. If you're taking four hours to make a product then price it ACCORDINGLY! What she's talking about is the race to the bottom. Ignore everyone else's prices. PERIOD! There will always be someone priced high and lower than you. Stay in your lane, figure out what you're product and YOU, yourself are worth per hour. Sure customers will go elsewhere you can't be worried about grabbing every customer out there. Use your social media accordingly, it takes time but if you have a good product they will come. One of my stores is stickers. Sure there's stores that sell stickers for $2 where mine cost $6-$7 but guess what... I'm still here getting repeat customers while the $2 store is no longer around. Same goes for my engraving and cutting store. People should be watching the episodes on UpFlip about TagPup.

when the barrier to entry is low, the competition is high. If you manufactured bionic eyeballs or quantum chips you wouldn't be competing with 45,000 at home moms and your neighbour. Most ppl selling their wares online have little to no specialized skills, they make stuff that anyone can make and spend all their time on marketing aspects. Its a downward spiral. And if someone manages to hit the jackpot selling whatever trinket or digital product, next year its a crammed market with everyone else doing it, and their once profitable business is now bust. In other words its nothing to do with etsy and everything to do with all the ppl competing with similar products for the same online market share, looking for fast easy money. The only way i see out of it is to either make something that has a higher barrier to entry and won't be flooded with knockoffs and variations in a few months, or sell in places that most other sellers aren't willing to go(eg real life)

The second assumption you're making is you think you know what my product was. I never said what I was selling.
The third assumption you're making is you think you know how long I stayed open and what I did to create traffic.
All of these assumptions are yours based on very little and completely misses the whole point of what I was saying in my OP which was, "What are the alternatives to Etsy?" Everything else is none of your business.

Don't think you can easily sell on your own. Your own site will be tough. Etsy is still very good compared to other marketplaces. Like anything else, jewelry, t-shirts, etc will be saturated.
Let me not even start about when your shop get puts on Reserve for no reason and they take all of your money for 90 days. I'm done with Etsy.

I am quitting etsy as a shopper. The attitude and arrogance of some sellers got to a ridiculous and unacceptable point. Many sellers have no clue how to deal with complaints politely or when they supposed to do a refund, they argue and fight. Im done with it. I wanted to support small businesses but i got sick of fighting and dealing with customer service. I'm back on Amazon and I'd rather support amazon than small businesses on etsy. You should make a video and educate business owners how to be professional. Many of my friends got back to amazon for the same reason.
Too many buyers want Amazon or Walmart treatment and prices and behave as such. When I was a seller, I didn't entertain nonsense complaints from buyers.
