- Finally talking about Why I Left Etsy and why It was the best decision for MY business. This was a personal choice I made for myself. I still think Etsy is a great place to start your business for beginners. With all the fees they were charging I thought it best I invest that money on a site which allowed me to have more control of the layout design.

Hey guys! Just want to call out that me leaving Etsy was a personal choice I made once I felt that my business kind of outgrew it. In this video Im referencing to how Etsy was when I used it back in 2017. With all the fees Etsy was charging, I thought it best I invest that money onto a site that allowed me to have control on the design/product layout. I still think Etsy is a FANTASTIC starting point for all new makers, I'm totally not knocking it. They have great marketing tools and lots of things have changed on their platform.
I use the shuttle app to sync my shopify and etsy. Orders, listings, customers..So basically any customer on etsy who has an account (not checking out as a guest) can be integrated into your shopify once they place an order :)
I really liked your points comparing Etsy vs. Shopify. I agree that for someone who is a new maker Etsy definitely makes more sense. Another point that was great, is that people rarely remember your name on Etsy and rather that they just bought something off Etsy. So many more good points, but another one that stood out was your idea of putting your Etsy on vacation mode and saying you moved. With no client database/customer emails, that was such a good way to direct your traffic to Shopify. ⭐

⭐️⭐️It’s good to see your perspective about each platform and the reason you made the switch without you saying one is bad or good. At the end of the day it is just a matter of what the make is looking at the moment and which platform help with what they are looking for.
⭐️⭐️ I officially started my business the same week as a big Etsy maker strike earlier this year which helped make my decision for me. 🤣 Definitely a challenge to get started without Etsy but I’m ultimately glad I went with my own website!

@@UrbanWanderlustStudios yes! Creators were being fed up with Etsy fees constantly going up but not having any improvements for you as a business, so they had a week-long strike and some Etsy consumers also did it!
I know I completely supported the strike... As both a seller for a few years and also a customer of other shops. I'm still on Etsy and trying to transition to Shopify but I can honestly say that I don't see what changed after the strike. The fees are still outrageous and they've seemed to have lost their handmade, artisan, unique vibe which was their foundation. It's like when I go to my farmers market and see UPC codes and commercial stickers on everything. Smh

Hey Judith. I did the total opposite. I already had my website with GoDaddy and decided to add additional streams of income and opened my Etsy store in April of 2020. I have been really successful on Etsy, but I do not have all my products listed. I do have a tag on my store that states they can find a full product catalog on my website. I switched hosting to Shopify earlier this year and love it. I use an app that integrates my Etsy with my Shopify and yes, the email and addresses are integrated into my Shopify so that I can retarget those buyers.
Great video. You now can get the buyer email address. Plus you now can directly email the customer. As a Canadian seller I have to add the hst tax in my prices. So it looks like my prices are higher. My goal for 2023 is get my own site. I probably not going to leave Etsy but limit the number of items.
Good idea not to close it. Just keep a small inventory! 👍🏼

Thank you so much for this video! I have a Etsy shop and recently opened a Shopify account. It's on pause at this time because I'm having a difficult time designing my web page. Etsy fees are extremely high and the free shipping has really taking a BIG BITE out of my business! After your video, I am going to post my products and open my Shopify Store. Although , I do not have a clue on how to design a website :( I'm just going to go for it! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! Take your time designing. I was not a designing or web designer. I goggled/ youtubed a LOT of things! LOL Don't ever feel rushed but good for you for just wanting to launch the site. I kept thinking i "wasn't ready yet" but sometimes you just gotta take the risk and just launch. all the other "pretty stuff" can be done afterwards

I had an awful experience last year. Thinking I was buying something from and supporting a “mom in her kitchen or craft room” and it was someone who was drop shipping items. I was furious. It got there way late (it was a gift) and I ended up having to pay shipping twice because I had a whole box I was shipping with an assortment of items.

I once bought a necklace for 40 dollars listed as handmade. I found the same product for 5 dollars on Aliexpress. I felt SO scammed!

so how much is shopify because i was wanting to sell my handmade candles on there
all depends on how much you're paying for your domain and which shopify plan you use. I used all the free ones in the beginning. But Etsy is still a great place for beginnings Im not knocking it at all. I just grew out of it.
