  • In this video, I will apply binding to the Raw Edge Applique quilt I stitched previously. I will cover seam allowances, attaching the binding, making the corners of the quilt binding and using a decorative stitch to wrap it up. All stitching will be done on the machine.
    Since several people have asked, the machine is a Bernina 1630 with the '96 update. Happy stitching!

    I am brand new to sewing and I have to say,you are seriously one of the best teachers I have seen. And I have seen alot this month lol. Thank you so much, what a wonderful time we live in. I am 67 and I tried learning sewing years ago more than once and always gave up. With the Internet I am enjoying every moment, even all the picking❤

    I have the most trouble having the back look as good as the front. Catching the binding in the back. Like your technique.

    This is a great tutorial for me a new quilter! We should utilize the decorative stitches just like you did. Do you ever trim back the corners in binding them?

    • @QuiltedPigPhoebe
      @QuiltedPigPhoebe  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Absolutely. On the wrap around (last) step, if a corner looks like it will just too bulky to be covered, I'll start by trimming out a little of the batting. Usually that does it, but sometimes it helps to trim off just a little of the folded inside corner of the binding. Just be careful because you want the binding to be "full," and you don't want a hole to show up later. Good luck, and thank you for watching!

    Rotate to 45' then continue to sew to the corner, this has been the missing link! Thank you...

      It was a game changer for me! No more catching the corner when you turn, and it makes the corner a little flatter for the wrap-around step.

      Hi Amy! I've had that fabric for several years because I was too chicken to do the French Roses pattern, but here's what I see on the selvedge: yellow is Fairy dust and Flowers, pink is Romantica, both from In the Beginning; peach is Skywriting, and blue is Seaweed, both by P&B. I hope you can find some of what you're looking for!

    • @QuiltedPigPhoebe
      @QuiltedPigPhoebe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I did. I made it in my video on raw edge applique and washed it to get the fluff. Washing before binding helps the binding to not bunch up the first time the batting gets washed.

    Great tips. I know a lot of gals that just hate doing the binding but I love it. I usually do stitch in the ditch for binding because I really want to do a great job of catching that loose side of the binding on the back but also like the option of using my decorative stitches on my machine. I don't free motion quilt but have also used the fancy stitches for quilting. Love the giant clip for keeping the quilt out of my way for joining the binding. That's the worst part is fighting with the quilt.

    So when you use these decorative stitches are you always stitching off the binding or does it depend on the stitch you pick?

    • @QuiltedPigPhoebe
      @QuiltedPigPhoebe  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I would say it depends on the stitch. I kind of want it to hit the middle so the most coverage from the stitch runs close to that loose edge.

    Thanks for all the specific details! Do you need to backstitch or knot the thread when you get to the very end?

    • @QuiltedPigPhoebe
      @QuiltedPigPhoebe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. For this stitch I normally backstitch a few. It's looks complicated enough that a few little overlaps don't show. If I'm close enough to the inside edge of the stitching, I just switch over to straight stitch and do a little back and forth.

    I cut my final join a wee bit short (fat 1/8th"), so it is taught but not tight. I also miter my join first to make it easier to sew. Creative Grids folded corner ruler is my go-to tool for making binding. A stylus is another useful tools for maneuvering tight corners.
