    I put a trackimo GPS on my drones. It’s a super small GPS that any drone can carry. I have brackets for each one, so the same trackimo is used for whatever drone I fly. In the event the drone crashes or malfunctions, you can easily find the drone.

    DJI drones have a function where the last location (usually the crash location) is recorded in the app and will allow you to rather easily find your drone back in such a field. Getting access to the field seems like the bigger issue there. Not the drone not having a battery....

    Where I am in Scotland not only do we have free charging on 50kW chargers but also no parking fees if charging (it’s patrolled too so no using a charge place but not pugging in and no icing either!) and at 3 of the charge hubs in the Park and Ride carparks we get a free shuttle bus into the city centre…………. Just wondering how long it will last with energy prices skyrocketing though. Not worried about the charging speed as I have a Mini Cooper S E with a 29kW battery.

    The R1S is tempting if not for the price. Ideally I wish it were maybe 10% smaller as well for more easy navigating in some city areas. I also have serious concerns on reliability of Rivian given the issues people are already having even at low miles.

    Interesting start to the trip. Especially for truck buyers, most of them would have charging at home and would therefore leave at 100% battery. I can't think of many people who own full size trucks but have an apartment with no dedicated parking spot. However, I understand you didn't charge probably to make the start of the trip more challenging.

    There needs to be an actual phone number or app that you can report charging issues to the charger provider and the vehicle manufacturer.
    Maybe feedback option in the app needs to be added or a rating button in the vehicle that pops up when the charge is completed.

    • @WilliamAArnett
      @WilliamAArnett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of the chargers have a phone number on them. And many of the apps have one, too. But they’re not particularly helpful in my limited experience. The customer service agent just says “we’re sorry, try another charger”. :-(

  • @Bengy22
    @Bengy22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Something happened with the overnight charge at 120v. Theoretically speaking 2kw * 12 hours would be roughly 24 kwh delivered to the truck or roughly 17% battery charge. Seems like when you showed us the range in the morning the truck was no longer charging, must have cut out a little after you showed us you were charging at 120v.

    • @codedGiraffe
      @codedGiraffe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      38:32 it says charging complete. The truck must’ve stopped charging in the middle of the night for some reason

    • @Bengy22
      @Bengy22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@codedGiraffe Yep that's what I'm thinking. When you do the math considering the battery size and range increase the truck stopped charging roughly 3 hours after the video update at night. So it only charged about 1/4 the amount of time it was on the charger which is a shame. The 15 miles gained should have been closer to 60 miles

    • @WilliamAArnett
      @WilliamAArnett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was an ordinary NEMA 5-15 plug then the max current is 12 amps which at 120 volts is 1.44 kW, not 2. But more importantly, the R1T uses several hundred watts running its computers, pumps and what not so the amount of power going into the battery is more like 1 kW.

    • @Crazypostman
      @Crazypostman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Came here to comment this... Something definitely had to have happened, you should have been charging at 2 KW for 12 hours! And the fact that it said charging complete on the screen maybe the GFCI tripped during the night. EV chargers have a tendency to trip gfci's

    • @Bengy22
      @Bengy22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WilliamAArnett I read into the rivian charger and it seems like it will only pull 1.3kw on 120v which is a shame, could have very well been a 20a outlet which would get the whole 2kw. I guess the car just rounds up to a kw when displaying charging which I didn't expect and makes my estimates wrong about 60 miles. Rivian themselves say it should give 3 miles of range per hour which I assume would account for any losses the computers and what not. Still something is off though with that being 3x more than the car actually got and with the car showing it wasn't charging in the morning.
      I think that if it was a 20a outlet and you had a charger that could take use of it (80% rule or 16a aka 2kw) he would have had a different opinion on the viability of charging at home with 120v. Yes it's slow but I bet for most people it would be good enough to at least get most of their daily miles covered with maybe a trip to a fast charger once every week or two. 2kw would be around that 60 miles added per 12h mark which I think would actually work for a lot of people

    Doesn't your family's house have a dryer plug that you can use?
    When taking such a long trip, you should stop by home Depot and buy a bunch of wall plugs and extra breakers so that you can retrofit plugs that you have control over, such as that RV plug which you could have switched over to something that is more compatible like a 14/50.
    I'm also wondering if the rivian charging station did not show up on your rivian map because it was offline from the painting.

    The RV outlet is a TT-30. It’s is a 120 volt 30 amp outlet. You’d need to buy an EV Specific adapter and then use the 14-50 adapter and lower the current to 24 amps. The RV adapters won’t work. It’ll charge twice as fast as a normal household outlet giving you 2.8 kW.

    Jordan here is a tip for Kyle and you when you are charging plan we’re you can get food near your wal mart before you get there. That you don’t complain that there is no place to eat at the Walmart when there should be something around on your way there to take to the charger. Also if you have a iPhone and are signed up with Ea for the pass plus membership you can just go to apple wallet pick your ea card and tap on the rfid symbol not credit card reader. It will start. Kyle tells people to swipe on the app and you don’t need to do that or look for the number at the top. Just plug in and use the Ea pass in wallet and tap I do it all the time and it works. Allysa mom could do it too. If you make videos it is good to show better ways to do things and not complain about Ea like you and amod did in your drive to texas. You are with Kyle enough to learn how to do it before the trip. Amad was new so I will cut him slack. A lot of people watch your videos and take what you guys say about charging as gospel when it isn’t always true . Kyle is so fixated about the kw and most people are not going to be as long as it works.

    The Rivian Adventure Network doesn’t make any sense. They don’t have the vehicles on the road to support a walled garden. They aren’t Tesla. It’s great that they want to add DCFC but they need to be open to all CCS vehicle. These walled gardens is part of what is preventing mass EV adoption. For non early adopters charging needs to be so much simpler. We need one plug and all stations open to all vehicles.
    Hopefully with the Infrastructure money Tesla follows through and opens the Superchargers. Since Rivian just copies everything Tesla does they’ll open the RAN to follow suit.

    • @protovack
      @protovack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the plan was always to have them open to all CCS vehicles. not sure where you got the idea they weren't. Tesla is confirmed to be opening superchargers to all CCS vehicles in north america. you don't have to "hope" it is currently in the works and confirmed.

    Seriously, does anyone in the US under the age of 50 realise that "food courts" and take-away counters aren't actually "restaurants"? Has anyone on this channel actually been to a decent restaurant? As opposed to a take away joint in a food court?
    I see this fetishism for rubbish food on several channels, not least Bjorn whatisname.... My theory is that as an EV needs time to charge, you have to eat whatever take away rubbish is nearby. If you had a gas car, you can plan a short trip and a nice meal in an actual restaurant, as you're not in the least tied to a charger.

    • @Jordan_Schiefer
      @Jordan_Schiefer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the contrary, a typical 'craft food hall' are all solid restaurants. Often times converted from food trucks. So it is quality food. And it gives you the option to go out with friends and all get a wide variety of grub! For the record, I do love genuinely good restaurants.

    • @ab-tf5fl
      @ab-tf5fl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "My theory is that as an EV needs time to charge, you have to eat whatever take away rubbish is nearby."
      Not really. If you don't like the food by the charging station, you can always just eat somewhere else, then go visit the charging station. Sure, you won't set any cannonball records that way, but an extra 30 minutes is not the end of the world.
      Alternatively, if you need to do a really deep charge that will take awhile, it's worth remembering that even without the vehicle you're not completely stranded. You can carry a bike or electric scooter and ride that to a restaurant a couple miles way. Depending on where you are, riding a bus or an Uber car could also be an option.
      Of course, if you're really in a hurry, you probably don't want to eat at any sit down restaurant anyway, no matter what car you drive because restaurants can be very slow in delivering food. Food courts may not be the best food, but they are fast.
