How To Swarm Kite With A Bard - Everquest Project 1999

- In this video, I breakdown a simple beginner's guide to swarm kiting with your bard. This is the fastest way to level in the game. Currently on the Green server, you have a 25 mob limit to how many enemies your dot can hit at once. Some servers have no limit and can take this even further. 25 does the trick though :).

No damn way I watch this video 3 years after the fact and see my Mage getting PL'd in the background. Been loving the content, binged a ton of the enchanter solo guides, they were really helpful for understanding the dungeons.

thanks for taking the time to do this video. I've kited with my bard using just the instrument that amplifies the song, strafe technique and always picking the slowest mobs in zone (non-casters oc course!). You won't need any selo's once the swarm kite circle is going. Makes it much easier without having to use macros and/or having to constantly hit the selo's for any reason. Got a fast one on ya by chance? Use the single target snare on that mobs and get out to lasso range. =]
Agreed. Much easier to avoid using selos. You can keep the mobs in the corner of your screen and hit them almost every tick.
Yoooo, saw you in EK the other day when someone was upset with you about pulling so many mobs saying "bards are the most selfish class" and I had your back man! I've seen your chanter vids and never knew in chat this was you. Very cool.
i don't get why people complain. They're allowed to nab mobs off your swarm.
on green 4 mobs is the max that aoe dots will hit for bards, unless that recently changed. looks like the max u are hitting is 4 in the video. You can pull more but can only hit 4. I leveled my bard 1-50 in the past 2 months at the end i stopped quad kiting to focus on charm kills but for me i could never hit more than 4 at once. I'd recommend trying to figure out kiting w/o using selos in your circles and if you get good you can swap out your instruments for the damage bonus. I cant remember if its hate or Kunark when these AOE hit values change, it should be posted on the project1999 green site w/ timelines which i cant access atm.
They recently upped the max to 25 mobs. Makes it more worth it. I had mobs a bit spread out which made me hit less than I could of been.
I'm just curious how many are you actually killing if they all start running away at 15-20% life..?
Hi rektyou, thanks for doing this most of the bard swarm kite guides aren't amazing, so this is helpful. I personally don't like swarm kiting, it isn't very fun. I have a 21 bard right now, do you have any methods/places you'd recommend to level instead? I'm working on powering through till I get charm.
Yea, it's not that fun. It's fast though. I've leveled up so many maxxed characters at this point, I'm okay with skipping teh grind haha.
Bards thrive in groups for sure though. I typically do Unrest at 15-25. Another good option is upper guk for this level range. I hit the HHK goblins from 25-30. I do Sol A or Split Paw 30-40. And I'll hit Kedge for 40-50 with my bard. You can also do Sol B and Lower Guk.. but those both have horrible exp modifiers. Good loot though.
There are definitely other options for each of these ranges.
First question, what servers have no limit? Im looking for a server that is actually classic, to many nerfs and changes on p99 to make it even remotely similar to how the game was. Second question, what are you pressing to get the rear view camera? I remember this back in vanilla but I can not find a binding for it.
It is easier to do without selo's for the kite circle. When you start doing like 100 mobs at a time, they glitch walk. The only way to really know if you are close is by turning on the 3d sounds and looking to see if your songs are hitting.
This was really helpful thank you! I just started a bard on green and trying to re-learn even the basics of the game is overwhelming and this broke this technique down well. Simple and maybe silly question, what do you have your chat window filters set to?
i went to EK & NK even WK to do this swamp at lvl 13. died more than gaining exp till almost nearly drop level to 12. went back crushbone collecting belts to turn in. now almost level 14.
How are you turning and strafing using only the keyboard? When I strafe+forward, then turn, it halts the strafe entirely. This is the only guide I've found covering the non-mouse version and I really can't figure this out.
How are you moving your camera/character?
In the video I see your cursor so I assume you're not using your mouse look.
I have AD for strafe and QE for "turn character." I cannot do them at the same time; Doing so 99% of the time causes me to stop strafing and stop moving forwards.
I'm assuming you're strafing, then you stop and use your turn key, then strafing again?
Would really Appreciate you braking this down!
P.S. I'm also playing around with another method of strait up strafing and just using the mouse to turn inwards to the mobs.

Is swarm kiting worth it if you can only kïll 4 at a time? Project quarm limited it to 4 because bards were pulling the entire zone

What key bonds do you use to kite? I was set up strafing and hitting enter twice, then using my mouse to turn. It doesn’t look like your doing the same thing I was is why I ask.
I create macros for my songs. So when i push 1, the macro will /stopsong then /cast 1. This makes sure I don't have to double tap to cast.
Also, when I'm doing the circle, I push my autorun key. that way I'm always moving forward and I can just push the turn right key and my songs.
If you kill a yellow (1-2lvs higher) in a minute giving 5% xp (TLP Thornblade PoP). How is this faster if I'm getting 25% in 5 minutes with normal melee kills?
I'm not familiar with that TLP, but with bard kiting, you have 25 yellow mobs you kill at once... not one at a time. It's the fastest exp in the game other than mass quest turn ins.
I went from 34 to 47 last night in 3 hours... Game is so easy now lol

Hello, i Am on p99 green and i search à zone to swarm kite with my lvl 26 bard. I was doing aviaks in South Karanas but they aren't son many. Do you Know a better place in classic era ? (No Kunark)
I think I was in Ocean of Tears at that point doing sister island. There are 6 or 7 spawns of named sisters which respawn very quickly and are around lvl 28-32 if i remember correctly.

Does the max limit of mobs get nerfed in Kunark of Velious? Or does the AOE on moving mobs get nerfed? I wondered if either of these will be nerfed on Project 1999.
I'm not sure the specifics on how they are going to do it on Green. I know for some things like this they aren't staying 100% classic. I know on BLUE, there is no limit to mobs. On green, there is a 25 mob limit right now... a few months ago, it was a 4 mob limit lol. The movement DPS nerf I'm not sure if they will do that or not. I don't believe that's on Blue though.
@@RektYou Blue has a 25 mob limit as well.
I thought AOEs only hit 4 mobs at a time at this point in the timeline? On your video I don’t know if I saw any times you hit more than that.
they increased it to 25 just abotu a week ago. I was hitting more than 4 mobs. If not, it would of taken a bit longer to kill all those 15-20 mobs

How did you get this DPS/Aggro panes on your UI?
if you right click the chat boxes, you can set filters for what you want to see in the chat box.
is there a way to make your macros repeat the spell without having to keep pressing the button
you could do something like
/stopsong
/pause 35, /cast 1
/stopsong
/pause 35, /cast 2
/stopsong
etc...
I'm sure there's a cleaner way to do that too. I don't know if i trust a long form macro and you'll be able to weave more without one i beleive. But, in groups, i can see how a single macro for the rotation of a normal fight could do well.
You didn't show the exp gain from that kite. That would have been nice to see.
I showed it briefly at the end when the volume was off. It was a pretty small pull so only got around 20% of the level in that one :)

it gets sore after a bit. I'm not used to it yet though too. So, I'm sure it won't be as bad after i get some muscle memory
Carpal tunnel is the most common bard injury. It's the most common excuse for people not willing to be this awesome.
this is a real thing for sure, my wrists are sore af right now but i cant bring myself to macro anything cuz i heard its better just to click the spell bar a million times an hour or more
You should try the high Rez textures
I only use autorun plus strafe and the right mouse button to steer circles. Never needed to use selos for speed and just dot song playing with no twisting. Just bigger circles. Very easy this way. Only thing toy have to watch out is not pulling shaman type mobs that have sow like the orcs on orc highway in oasis. Tons to kill there.
no selos is too scary for me right now haha. I'll have to try it though. YOu're the second bard to tell me try without selos

@gladeous This is how I kite, too. The problem is that with the bodies piling up, i'll occasionally stop mid kite when I accidentally loot one. How do you keep from doing this?

This will allow you to hide all corpses with the click of a button while strafing. Also, when swarming with no selo's, watch out for mobs with faster run speed - wolves, lions, griffins, etc. They WILL run faster than strafe speed. The kite he pulled wouldn't be possible without selo's.
Also @RektYou it IS much easier than you think. Just hold forward > hold right click > hold right (or left if you're strafing the other way) > press enter twice. Once you're strafing, just practice youre circles. Go around a tree or rock or something. Then practice with 1 mob and see how it goes

When did they buff it up to hit 25 mobs? I thought i remembered they nerfed aoe to shit on p99 servers?
it was max 4 mobs a few weeks before I made this video. They bumped to the 25 now.

it's tough on classic with the limited hotkey slots and no third party UIs. So, I usual avoid it unless I need to.

Repeat by pressing again. Still haven't figured out how to loop it with the /bandolier switching constantly though.
To repeat any song just use the top command and the /melody 1 2 3 4
Whatever numbers assigned to that spell. This will repeat indefinitely.
May I ask what UI you are using?
this is just the normal UI you come with. I just added window boxes and filtered them to give me the info i want
have an enchanter and thinking of making a new one. Bard is on the list because I like all the utility it has but also thinking a tank. What do you think?

enchanter is the most powerful. lots of fun, but tough to learn to do it right. Bard has a lot of utility. You have to constantly be doing something as a bard though. Your wrist gets sore lol. I love bards so far. Tanks are always useful, but you will be stuck to a group which is a slow dreadful process sometimes haha.
Most of the guides I've seen online include kunark. There isn't many zones to swarm kite in classic after 30 it seems. I did North Karana willoow wisps from 14-17. Then I did East Karana everything from 17-23. I'm in OOT doing sisters right now at 23. I hear you cna do till 35. then from there, i have no idea. when kunark rolls out, there are outdoor zones everywhere lol

Just taking a bit of a break. Got burnt out with green and the same content lol. I'll be back next month with the release of kunark. I'll definitely pick back up on videos then as well.
The thing that I just don't understand (and this isn't a criticism of you but swarm kiting in general) is how someone can tie up 24 mobs in the zone for 25 minutes and see nothing wrong or selfish about that. It's not like mobs keep spawning, not until those mobs die 25 mins later. If it were a single player game it would be fine, you're just using the bard's mechanics to level efficiently. But this is an MMO. Even worse is when bards swarm their kite through other players and get them killed. It takes a certain sociopathic personality to want to play this way.
there are plenty of mobs in the zones bards kite. In east karana for example, there are tons of mobs left for multiple groups to kill. I was there once and 3 bards were swarming at the same time and there were still 2 groups pulling consistently.
I can understand your argument about them "taking all the mobs". The only reason bards do this is to speed up leveling as fast as possible. It's not like we are going to be in your way after 1-2 days. We'll be 10 levels above you by that time.
Swarming over other groups is definitely a no no. Probably a newbie swarmer or someone with a grudge haha.
