About this game:

the fact that he literally SAID THE WORD "charcoal" while thinking about the riddle, without realising that coal/charcoal is itself the answer (black when you buy it, red when you use it, and grey when you throw it away.)
Nothing like watching an NL video to make yourself feel like a bona fide genius.
When he keeps going around the room completely avoiding the table with the candle gives me anxiety.

11:09 so frustrating when you watch Ryan walk by the candle 4 times and pick up 2 objects right next to it. Especially when you solved the riddle 3 minutes prior and say it sitting on the table right next to where you need to place it...
Was Ryan right about the soulless men? Was it just he had to avoid their gaze?
Ngl I thought the answer to that riddle NL was struggling with could have been "a newspaper"
When you buy it, it's black (the ink on the page is black)
When you use it, it's red ("red" being a homonym of"read" when spoken out loud)
When you throw it away, it's grey (the ink from the paper transferring when you read and so smudging the page grey)
Of course, "charcoal" as an answer fits better but I always liked it better when a riddle has that "unexpected" brainteaser element and "charcoal" being the answer was a bit too straightforward in my opinion
I thought it was a match so thought he was more right with wood than it actually being charcoal

I think people are too forgiving in how impossibly frustrating it is to watch NL play escape rooms or puzzle games. Most of the commenters find it amusing but these videos are borderline maddening and pretty worrying also. It's too much, I honestly wish he was faking it...
You try solving puzzles while also telling jokes. It ain't easy.
@@jays.6843 I hear you but I don't think it actually applies in Ryan's case. By his own admission, his greatest skill as a creator is his ability keep talking whilst playing. NL is so talented because his commentary and gameplay don't suffer from each other. Puzzle games are the only videos NL makes where his commentary is shit AND he accomplishes nothing in the game. If he can crack jokes while fighting Seith and Priscilla at the same time, commentary should almost never get in the way of his game.
