I've also got something special planned for Sonic Vol. 2 as an unofficial addon for the hack, that being a "high color" Mesen HD pack with more Mega Drive-accurate color attribution!
Also for those commenting on Scrap Brain Zone, an early draft of it DOES exist, tucked away in the Level Select! Input the Konami Code on title screen to access it!
Thanks for playing our hack, really, I'm glad it went well for you, congratulations!!!! I tell you that for the new version that is coming we are experimenting to add sound expansion EPSM (It uses an Yamaha YMF288 soundchip) 😁
I don't like the fan made bootleg NES version of sonic the hedgehog, i like it better if nintendo work with sega to make nes version of sonic than the fan made.
I get this feeling this is from an alternate timeline where Sega was never a rival to Nintendo, but a third party company from the start making games for the NES.
Hoje são parceiras, a Sega produz games para a Nintendo
Altered Beast was on the NES weird as that is.
After Burner, Alien Syndrome, Shinobi, and Fantasy Zone were on NES
@@iamhere490only Japanese sunsoft version of fantasy zone was perfect and one what we got by tengen is absolute crap
@@FilmeseSeriesAsiaticasele falou se a sega nunca fosse rival no começo
Not only epic, but technically, visually and all things impressive for NES hardware! 😃
I was particularly blown away by Blue Spheres being in this hack, and matter of fact that it wasn't just there, the level designs matched the original things without slowdown!
We need to remember that this used to be one of the most notorious bootlegs on the nes

And now i'm waiting for a proper Felix The Cat NES fan conversion to Sega Genesis.
No, this is proof that bootleg sonic game is terrible and would not work for the NES game console.
@@Travis-ea4205no, those felix the cat sega bootleg game are terrible because of the blood and gore at the game over fan made game. Beside Konami is bringing back felix the cat NES and game boy game in March of 2024.

Sonic's sprite is so small yet so expressive.
I love it. It's so much better than whatever Hummer Team was doing trying to just crush down the Sonic 1 sprites into a smaller size.
(He looked so cynical in some sprites, especially the skidding and second "bored" animations...)
This is AMAZING! The OST actually sounds great.
I've actually unironically listened to the OST by itself on some few days. This is up there with the all-time NES greats imo.
Time traveler: *accidentally bumps into someone*
The timeline:
Hackers do what Hummer Team don't.
LOL. Cool!
Aside from still not being able to collect every ring in a loop, this is a really impressive hack.
That's actually being addressed in an upcoming update! Not only that but further work on Scrap Brain Zone, the endings and the function from actual Sonic 1 where looking up or ducking would scroll the camera up and down.
@@ChromiusMixin will hyper sonic be added?
@@smartass643 Already added; his appearance is the same as Super Sonic here but has further amplified physics.
You collect the Super Emeralds from the Blue Spheres special stages.
@@ChromiusMixin are there save slots?
@@smartass643Nope; game has to be played in one sitting like the original, but level select is also available.
Physics are wonky, but still impressive. The official 8 bit Sonic games had different physics which seem a bit more consistent within those games though they weren't aiming for one to one with Genesis Sonic as much as this appears to be aiming for. Getting this speed out of nes is also impressive.
I've not seen slowdown even once in this hack now that I think about it. At worst, just sprite flicker due to going over the sprite limit, particularly during Blue Spheres special stages!
46:25 this speaks for itself
NGL I don't know why I didn't just do a rewind then and there, it really did feel like I just made the special stages look jank.
Just like the original!
Incredible work, I'm impressed with how well 99% of this plays. The other 1% includes the loops and blue spheres.
Loops just need a slight bit of polish but I think blue spheres came out of the oven way too soon. It's super impressive that it's in, but it's really rough. A little extra work (or a lot, considering what it took to create the illusion already) would make the difference between "ambitious but..." or "I can see what they were going for..." and being truly great.
you can't really do that kind of 3D much better than this here. I suggest an isometric view instead, so the camera never needs to change
They added Sonic 3's special stages?! Impressive! Although, the turning hurts to look at
The instant they revealed Blue Spheres on the RHDN forum thread for this hack I couldn't believe it, but lo and behold, it's real!
Yeah, don't think there's anything that can be done about the turning though x_x
Shame you only get to use Hyper Sonic for one act as well, well at least until you finish the game, you can cycle back to GHZ Act 1 by pushing start on the good ending "End" screen, with all chaos/super emeralds still collected.
@[VUT] Windows XP TWO Oh that's actually Special Stage 3. But yeah I noticed the palette is definitely off. To my knowledge though, the NES and Famicom have a very, very limited palette of colors you can pick from. Most other special stages have a close enough palette, but the third one? Definitely off. Maybe it's a result of the palette limitation.
@@ChromiusMixin They did all of this, but they couldn't add Scrap Brain Zone. And that's sad.
@@greenflashmetal Nono, Scrap Brain Zone _is_ in this hack! Input the Konami Code and you can access the level select.
Scrap Brain Zone is on the list of selectable zones, all three acts infact! It's a bit early in development though so the levels are a bit empty. Understandably then, it doesn't appear throughout the main course of the game.
@@ChromiusMixin oh, didn't know that. And, what's Konami Code?
I tried this out on my NES Classic Edition, and it works really well!
Cheers! I don't have a NES Classic myself but I'm glad to hear that's up and running!
I thought I was crazy there for a sec. I have the same thing. Is it mini?
You mean the one that made by Nintendo and not a fan made, right?
My word! This rom-hack turned an infamous bootleg into something amazing! It's even better than the fan-game based on Somari!

I love how throughout all ROM hacks and improvements of this game, people still have yet to figure out how to have Sonic collect that ONE RING when going through loops
BLUE SPHERES? ON THE NES?? AMAZING
Truly a Top Loader Certified Moment.
Using an emulator lol. FCEUX to be exact. Probably not gonna have real hardware anytime soon.
@@ChromiusMixin I believe he was referencing the Friday Night Funkin' mod song, Top Loader, which is based on a creepypasta about this Sonic NES game.
@@victim.4forget about those awful sonic fan made bootleg game, the real sonic classic games are better than bootleg games.
This is the best Sonic NES conversion ever made
35:46 You're telling me the NES can handle Sonic pushing a computer monitor? I wasn't expecting him to be able to shift it at all!
Honestly, probably just a minor defect of this game's flawed engine. Monitors shouldn't move at all.

@@ChromiusMixin translation: Thank you for playing our hack, I hope you enjoyed it!!
It’s fine that SEGA didn’t actually make any official Sonic The Hedgehog games for the NES, but that would be really cool if they ever did. At least we’ve got some official Sonic 8-bits games for the Game Gear and the Master System. It would also be really cool if they did 16-bits games for the SNES too. By the way, this is the pretty awesome hack game! 👍
AntDude needs to know about this update PRONTO!
I could try to contact him... then again, he probably wouldn't listen to someone as small as me.
FNF Fans be like: IS THAT TOP-LOADER?!?!
Tru
Technically the 2nd model NES is a top loader
More like: “iS tHaT tHe GuY fROm ThE fNf MoDs?”
@jesuslobo3178 And the Famicom, Twin Famicom, Dendy (shouldn't really be counted as that unofficial, and is basically the same design as the famicom iirc), and the AV Famicom.
I like fnf but i hate how this game is used for creepypastas in the modding community. Like…be original for god’s sake.
THIS LOOKS OUTSTANDING
*cough* SOMARI
This is arguably better than the Master System and Game Gear versions.
Edit: I meant that it was more impressive, with more enemies on screen, better graphics (in my opinion), and being closer to the original Genesis game than the Master System port, despite having the MS bonus stages.
Nah, not the M.S.
It is still at its own glory.
@@TittleTattler But the SMS has no background, its one color
@@playnalisis Well?
And it looks realistically fitting, hence tricking us to think of it as something expressive, no..?
Not exactly arguable when your competition is just the game gear version
I used to play the ms version, the palette on the nes looks nicer imo
I thought this was well-made and kind of novel until I saw they got Blue Sphere into the game. THAT is damn impressive for the NES. The left-right rotation of the stages is kind of jarring but to actually pull that off at all...
Evidently? It's actually able to be pushed even further. The current build, not released yet, has Blue Spheres upgraded with background scrolling, more accurate HUD palettes, more frames of animation for turning, GET BLUE SPHERES and PERFECT text too... it's nuts. I'm really holding out for it right now.
This Is Amazing!
HYPER SONIC IS HERE?!
Looks awesome!
Now we need retroachievements for this hack since we have them for Somari.
This is very impressive!
I finally got this and it was WORTH IT
Run on real NES hardware? Looks way better than SMS Sonic. Impressive...
This game is fabulous!!!
Pretty good ngl. A few things I don't agree on with it, but definitely fun to be had in there!
This looks pretty impressive for the NES hardware. lol
That, you'd be right on! Would you believe that this is still being worked on too?
Scrap Brain Zone also exists in this version already, albeit only in level select. Think they're working on fully animated Super Sonic too, and the lead dev has a pretty impressive video showing an upgraded Blue Spheres implementation! Scrap Brain Zone is also being polished up for the next version. Other things include more SMS Special Stage variations, HUD improvements, *Mega Drive* styled checkpoints, so on!
I'll be playing through the update in full when that comes out, if that intrigues you?
top loaderings‼️‼️
i see youve come to the end of my masterpiece
@@KiwiJuiceSG this game was a little puzzle... for one with a strong mind to solve.

THIS IS SICK
It looks beautiful
If sonic 1 was multiplatform
Glad the new level clear screen doesnt have that screeching anymore.
Way way past cool!
*HOLY SHIT, THERE'S NOW A SONIC 3 SPECIAL STAGE??*
The first 7 anyway, yeah! None from the second half of the game (S&K), but these special stages are also where you get the Super Emeralds!
This blew me away when I first saw it on the RHDN forums, and 1.6 is looking pretty great as well. (It'll use an audio expansion with FM audio!)

SEGA after a few fateful years into the Dreamcast's lifespan...
11 hits? That’s not what I consider a Sonic boss fight!
Would you believe me if I said that's actually one of the things about this hack that bothers me most? 🤔
@@ChromiusMixin Yes. Yes I would.
A ton of fantastic improvements for NES limitations and such!
...and yet...you still can't collect that one ring on loops.
That has been fixed, or at least it's been shown to be fixed, on the hack's RHDN forum thread.
I have a brilliant idea this needs to be hacked more and made into Sonic 3 and the rest of the music replaced and re-arranged as Sonic 3's
**I NEED THIS IS MA LAIF!!!**
If someone took this and made a functioning Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for NES I would have such the shit eating grin on my face.
May I ask how did you set this hack up
where are you from download?
why couldn’t they use the 8-bit master system sonic 1 version but change stuff to make it like the megadrive/genesis 1 ? it seems they started from scratch on the whole game, like when you go round the loop thing on green hill zone it kinda looks glitchy when you collect the rings the collision is not there yet 😢
Is there an improvement of that GBC Sonic game yet?
Sonic adventure 7 and 8?
This is what the game gear should’ve looked like
Can they fix the ring in the loop that isn't collected when Sonic touches it?
Already fixed. That updated version isn't out yet though.
this just shows that you can do sonic right on nes
Well done.Impressive!!But Scrap Brain zone is missing!
Scrap Brain IS in the game actually! It's playable through the level select which you access through the Konami Code, but Scrap Brain Zone is in an early stage of development, thus understandably missing from the main game.
@@ChromiusMixindid they add the checkpoints in the game
@@benlawlan3391 Nope, not as of now.
@@ChromiusMixin they should add it in another update
i never knew there was blue spheres in this game until now (same with super sonic)
Scrap Brain Zone as well if you enter the level select!
Level select is accessed by inputting the Konami code on the title screen.
I guess NintenDOES what SEGA can ALSO do... kind of...
Would this be possible to put onto an nes cart?
Pretty certain, yeah! This runs on all the best and accurate emulators. NEStopia, FCEUX, Mesen, Ares... I'd say go for it!
This is cool... but why you have to hit eggman 11 times instead of 8?
Wait so can you put this entire game onto an nes cartridge and it will run fine on the og nes?
Far as I know, yes! It will run on original hardware.
@@ChromiusMixin cool!
Una pregunta este hack es la nes estoy confundido
Checkmate Sega
Sonic still misses that one ring on the loop
We have already fixed the ring collisions, this and many more changes will be visible in the next update 😁
wow awesome, i hope someone makes Super Mario Bros for the Master System (Super Boy does not count)
That's just some boy, that is not Mario and it never will be in my heart
(Yeah, someone probably could port SMB to the Master System, maybe even make it look a bit like the official SNES port since Master System can draw more colors on sprites and tiles at once and such.)
@@ChromiusMixin exactly what i was thinking
I think next game is Sonic 2 on NES (a.k.a. Somari 2) like on ending game
I wonder why no one attempted to add Scrap Brain yet. 59:44
If Hummer Team still existed now, someone there would easily notice this hack's existence. Who knows what happens from there?
Rom hackers do what hummer team doesn’t
Special Stage: 486 Rings
My Record (with save states): 485 Rings
In the next version will be available the new SMS & GG style special stages, hope you manage to update your record 🥳
how do i open this and play it?
Super Sonic in Sonic 1.. but only on NES
Sonic 1 on mobile, or just Sonic Origins in general.
BUT...can you still play as Somari?
No elongated plumbers in this hack, unfortunately. With the amount of material being made with the blue hedgehog in the next version as well, including new ending cutscene sprites and fully animated Super/Hyper Sonic, Somari's looking unlikely unfortunately.
What emulator are you using to play this?
FCEUX was used for playing the game!
I was kinda afraid of that, because I have the emulator and when I tried to load the rom it gave me an error
imagine a dude with ocd plays the special stages💀
Meanwhile Scrap Brain Zone: AM I JOKE TO YOU?
It exists in the ROM and is playable actually! Early in development, but playable.
Try getting to the level select using the Konami code on the title screen!

All these years and they still csnt fix that loop ring bug...
👀
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This game is on my mini NES
Right on! How well does it run? No emulation bugs?
結局スペシャルステージはクリアしなくていいのかな。
So, what exactly are the differences between "Super Sonic" and "Super _er_ Sonic" other than BGM change?
Supposed to be Hyper Sonic I think since those are the super emeralds, but nothing distinguishes Hyper from Super other than further amplified physics. Not even the palette changing effect, sadly
First they are Chaos Emeralds, but later they are Sol Emeralds.
This originates from Sonic Classic Heroes.
Collect the Chaos Emeralds to become Super.
Then collect the Sol Emeralds to become Hyper.
Eu tô chocado com o bônus stage aos 23:00 😮😮😮
22:31
Where is my boy? Where is my Somari?
Unfortunately, looks like he died in a terrible accident in Labyrinth Zone
THEY GOT FREAKIN' BLUE SPHERE?
Apparently! They even added Hyper Sonic as a reward, though he's a bit disappointing since while he's even faster as he should be, he doesn't even have a palette cycling effect.
@@ChromiusMixin The short answer is that the NES only has 4 sprite palettes, which are widely shared by all objects throughout the game, so it is not possible to implement Hyper Sonic coloring without affecting any of these groups or making major sacrifices.
If sega ported sonic 1 to the nes
Wait. There’s no Scrap Brain Zone?
Scrap Brain Zone exists in an early stage of development in this version. Input the Konami Code on the title screen and you should hear a ring chime. Pushing start, the last input of the code, takes you to the level select. Scrap Brain Zone is present there and selectable, all three acts!
The physics still feel janky
The real question is, does it work on real hardware?
TOP LOADER REFERENCE!!!!!!???????????????
Well, this isn't the top loader NES model... or NES hardware for that matter lol. FCEUX emulator actually!
The only thing I don't like at all is when you go to the rotating platforms and take the rings and one remains. That's my only complaint but I make a lot of progress.
Fixed, actually! It's been fixed for a while now; the hack has a forum thread on RHDN. That version isn't released though, but it is going to be a pretty big release again.
@@ChromiusMixin Ok but then if it's fixed brother the ring is still there
