    We're back with a review on the Topre Realforce 87U Variable Weight electrostatic capacitive keyboard! Technically not a mechanical keyboard, but they're generally categorised together, and this is a high grade keyboard for typist's which was designed and manufactured in Japan.
    Note : I did use this for a few weeks on and off, and repacked it to show the unboxing.
    Sound test is at 7:45

    UPDATE : Topre is amazing. With more experience with more switches and keyboards, I've grown to appreciate Topre switches much much more.

      you should checkout the FC660C i got on and added Hasu controller making it fully programmable..if you want a full size topre you can look at the "Leopold FC980C" if i'm correct HASU also made a controller for that one not 100% sure.. the one thing i don't like about Realforce is that it has a non removable cable. Leopold has removable cable.

      totally agree i just modded them lubed them with superlube grease for the stabs and superlube oil for the sliders and added hyperspheres ..my topre just got better awesome.. i'm thinking of getting the Keyclack silencing rings because i want a spare set and the price is great i payed way way more for my hyperspheres too expensive.. these look better than the KBD ones ...What i also like about topre is that you can easily mod them without having to solder..

      Yeah it's funny how much Topre can grow on you if you let it, often I'll feel like trying something MX variant, but I always end up coming back to my FC660C. Nothing seems to feel quite as good somehow. I think a large part of why I like it so much is the capacitive nature of the sensing mechanism with it's built in hysteresis, so there's never any chattering. For my light typing style this is great for accuracy, with every normal electrical contact switch I've tried double presses always seem to creep in, even if it's one in two hundered words its still seriously annoying.
      Modification is great with Topre too, I've fully disassembled my FC660C for modification and tweaks probably a couple of dozen times now, I love that I don't have to worry about soldering stuff and damaging the PCB in this process, just an overall nicer more meditative experience that modding MX boards I find.

    after buying a MX Red keyboard, waiting 10 days, I ordered my first Topre keyboard. Totally worth it. I ended purchasing a 2nd one for my office. The noise on the videos (including my own) is misleading. I can't hear any noise coming from my own typing but when I watch my video, I can hear a louder noise from the typing. Not sure why the difference. The noise is almost none existing. I highly recommend a Topre keyboard if you are typing all day long.

      Purchased one for 345 CDN.. I have to agree, its not worth it. I would suggest people to get a mechanical keyboard with official Cherry MX switches. The tactile feedback and click-y noise is psychologically satisfying. I agree, this is a beautifully built keyboard.

      you could grab a FC660C for $100 less.. i payed way more but availability helped the prices.. and i do prefer Leopold because of the detachable cable.. still it's lot of $$ no argument there..And if you add an aftermarket controller like i did from Hasu $46 + $26 lube/oil $50 silence rings..(now also cheaper) it's a lot hahaha.. do you know there are people paying $230 just to replace the case of this board.. i'ts called " Norbaforce: after-market housing" it's absolute perfection build in the US (and i'm European haha) .. i suppose if you have the $$ to spare why not..for me i would spend that cash on a nice board for work not an extra case ..

    • @samdeur
      @samdeur 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if you had asked this question a few months ago i would have said Topre is the mechanical type switch i prefer. But Topre also has it's issues that i'm finding out now that i'm in to modding my boards. Having said that i like tactile switches for typing so non gaming. and my two favorite switches are for long days 45g Topre like the FC660C. And for cherry and cherry style switches i would go for mx-clears. Also i have bought Kailh switches to tryout so i will have to wait on that to give my opinion.. i like mx-brown an gateron brown, kailh-brown but find them a bit on the light side of things. The perfect tactile switch would be a zealios tactile switch for me.. or what i'm going to do is mod cherry mx-clear switches with lighter springs and lube them.. a time consuming process for sure.. hahaha

    Hi Tae! Thanks for the review. Just got a question though. I just bought samples for 30g, 45g and 55g topres and to be honest, they felt kind of meh... didn't feel much tactility at all. Do you think it's impossible to get an accurate feel of a full keyboard with just samplers or are they a close enough approximation? Thinking of just sticking to my mx speed keeb for now.

    • @jordanlimantara1814
      @jordanlimantara1814 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should try a whole board if possible, I have variable realforce and a type heaven which is otw, curious to how it would feel when it's uniformed.

    • @UseVisine
      @UseVisine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jordanlimantara1814 TY! Yup. I bought a leopold/realforce r2 45g tkl to satisfy the curiousity (and it was the last one in stock from widebasket so had to act fast). Love it. For typing, I think I would've preferred 55g. But for gaming and typing, I'm happy with 45g. Samplers, while helpful, just don't give you the full feel of a keyboard.

    • @jordanlimantara1814
      @jordanlimantara1814 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UseVisine I'm glad you pulled the trigger on it, cause I'd be pretty bumped out if people makes decision based on just a single key press. • @jordanlimantara1814
      @jordanlimantara1814 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UseVisine as a side note, I have been quite dissappointed with the realforce quality control. The spacebar rattles like hell, the case creaks like a bitch(or they might all be like that, Idk), and just now I realize that the feet is uneven, so it tips a whole lot despite it's weight, overall I can't bring myself to hate it cause it's just soooo good to type on regardless

    Why does the left CTRL keycap have a light hole thing on it?
    Also, those aren't just spare Caps and CTRL keycaps are they? They're if you want to have the CTRL key where the Caps key currently is and vice-versa, that's why that 'spare' CTRL key is bigger and Caps is smaller and has light hole on the left. So that makes sense as to why there is a light on the bottom left CTRL key, but still doesn't explain why the keyCAP needs a light hole, if you see what I mean ^_^ Unless there is some use for a CTRL key to have a light?
    But yeah, I much prefer to have the CTRL where caps normally is, so it's cool they include those keycaps to swap out in the box.

      Thanks! I bought a cheap interim board with Outelo blue switches 80G. I find it agreeable, other than its rainbow lighting and a tendency to double type i's and r's. It's a base level from which to better understand keyboards. I'd prefer something quieter with thick PBT keycaps and/or backlighting. Zealios have the advantage of being Cherry compatible, and I've only heard great things about them.

      So? Why do these arbitrary terms even matter? It really makes no difference. It is what it is, and that is all that matters. No classifications should impact anybody's opinion of it.

    • @liracul
      @liracul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Topre rubber domes have more protection from dirt dust and water. Not saying its waterproof but provides an extra layer which could mean the difference when unplugging it after a spill. And they are rated at a lifetime of 50 million keystrokes compared to mechanical cherry mx 20 million. People find mechanical keyboards to be clearly superior to rubber domes, but in the case of topre alot of care was put into these keyboards and these rubber domes are not your average keyboard. The difference between mechanical and shit rubber dome is the difference between relaxation and arthritis. That's why these terms somewhat matter to someone who has knowledge in these things.

    I honestly do not see how these keyboards can be worth upwards of $300. I myself just purchased a Razer Ornata, adn LOVE the feeling, it clicks at the PERFECT point and just feels amazing. The tactile click/bump just puts the cherry on top. Plus the stealthy black design looks awesome. And last but not least, THE WRIST REST, hands down, the best feeling material I have ever felt. It is like your hands are sitting on clouds. I normally game for around 5-6 hours a day, and this wrist rest covers that. Not to mention the Chroma enabled RGB lights. This keyboard feels great and should be tried by anyone looking for a new experience. One last thing, it's a WHOLE LOT cheaper than the Topre switch boards, so that's pretty much a win win for me.

      The Razer Ornata seems gimmicky to some because its a mecha-membrane hybrid, but it really does feel very satisfying when typing. Better than any cherryMX switch i’ve used, thats for sure.

    • @trevor266productions

      WPM is what counts, I use my index, middle and ring fingers for most keys, pinkies for a few others like tab, etc. and thumbs for just the space bar, and I can pull 100 WPM just fine, home row is just a nice standard but not what determines if you can type or not.

      Well, although I agree that keyboards are for typing, people don't buy them purely to type on.
      I am a Mechanical Engineer, and I love most things that has mechanical elements in them. I buy a DSLR because it has a mechanical shutter mechanism (eventually fell in love with photography as well), and so mech keyboard...

      Wrist health is more important. Correct typing technique will minimize the amount of wrist movements needed for fingers to reach certain keys allow you to type longer with less pain and less chance for carpal related injuries.

    Not to start a flame war here, but good lordie, I hope they feel better than they sound. They *sound* dead, like disappointing keyboards with MX Brown and Matias Quiet Click switches I've used in the past. I'd hate to waste $250 on one just to be disappointed by the feel.

      Leopold and hhkb look way better than this. That huge top bezel doesn't look that good, and it's the only thing that kept me away from buying one of these. It's unfortunate that there is no 55 gram Leopold or hhkb out there.

      @@rax2973 Now you got your wishes with the newer versions and people like me are sad :( The one in the video looks classic and very good. The new ones like any other modern generic keyboard out there.
      They really should work more with bezels and stuff these days, give the keyboards some character. Most keyboards today looks like a mess, no negative space at all.
