The last queen of Travancore, Pooradam Thirunal Sethu Lakshmi Bayi CI, who ruled the kingdom from 1924 to 1931, is a forgotten figure, though she had introduced many reforms like abolition of Devadasi system and the prohibition of animal sacrifice.

Why isn't this history being taught in schools. All we are taught is.about rulers of the northern side and middle India. Such a great ruler. Indians should know about her and surely the world.

You are always taught about Significant things. You mean just to appropriate information geopgraphically, you miss out and never tell important information. The most important developments in the South mentioned are Bhakti movement and then the Vijayanagara empire. Other than that, Kerala itself was a land of 100 kingdoms, whom Travancore itself depended on.

Good one, but could have been more researched
All her achievements are conveniently forgotten or converted to Chithira Tirunals name... The reason is simply the ego of Chithira Thirunals mother towards the last queen.
How simply she and her whole family gave up the kingdom and all its luxuries, and even their royal titles to lead a simple living in a different city amongst the commons. Only a great mind can forgo these pleasures for a simpler lifestyle
Whereas the other half of the same royal clan still clings to royalty in this 21st century!! The much celebrated princesses who are still in Travancore(nieces of Chithira Tirunal) are in no way higher in cadre than the last queen's grand daughters. They still live as Mrs Rugmini Verma or Mrs Parvathy Verma while here in Travancore, we still celebrate His Holiness Aswathy Thirunal Gowri Lakshmibai whatever.....!!
The regeant Rani had to leave Travancore not because of the union formed by their employees. That was only the last nail in the coffin. Their estates, allowances and staff were drastically cut down by the renowned Chithira Thirunal and his cunning mother. They were literally reduced to nothing and the Rani was fed up of living in such humiliation, which is why she decided to leave.

      Tax on breast size
      Head tax
      Ornaments tax
There was a problem of 120 different inhuman taxes which was implemented by Travancore kingdoms to the lower class people in 17th, 18th and till 19th century. Nambudiri Bramhin was the main culprit in that. Why didn’t you people research or speak on on this ?

Judeo-Christianity is the foundation of global superpowers such as America, Russia, Britain, Europe, etc.
Islam, (though I do not agree with the philosophy) is the foundation of some of the world's richest and most extravagant countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, etc.
Hinduism on the other hand, is arguably not even the foundation of India (Britain is). Let's say it is the foundation is India, so what? Hinduism has turned India into a massive slum, from which people long to escape. (I am saying all of this as an Indian who grew up abroad)
And yet you despise all the monotheistic religions despicable, while you stand behind a bunch of rock and stones and pooping cows which you worship (the funny part is that India is the biggest exporter of beef). While you deify the River Ganges and yet still poop and pollute and throw dead bodies into it.

When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.” - A.P.J.
Travancore rulers had laid solid foundations for the development and well being of the people in general, the results which we can see in today's Kerala.. good education system, good health care system, good panchayat level organisation..all in all a better sate with solid foundation...

the Vaikom Satyagraha, the struggle for the right of lower castes to walk on the streets surrounding the Mahadeva temple at Vaikom in the princely state of Travancore is associated with Gandhi.it was not a voluntarily grant from the side of travancore rulers. Gandhi came to vaikom, had received a registered mail, on the dais, from the orthodox Brahmins taking exception to his views on untouchability. There were hectic parleys as he met Sri Narayana Guru, the Maharani Regent, the Diwan, the police commissioner, the satyagrahis, representatives of Ezhavas and Pulayas, and the recalcitrant orthodox Brahmins. An initially aggressive Travancore state administration later mellowed down. After being quiet in the beginning, the orthodox Brahmins had launched a counter agitation. The marathon meeting was held at Idanthuruthil Devan Neelakandan Namboothiri’s home. To this day, oral stories circulate about the meeting. According to one apocryphal version, considering that Gandhi had crossed the seas and mingled with Ezhavas, he had to stand at the threshold of the Namboodiri home. That temple streets were out of bounds for lower castes was divine punishment for sins committed in past lives, the Brahmins contended. Gandhi made three proposals. The first was to hold a referendum among all adults in either Vaikom or in Travancore. The second was mediation. The third was that the orthodox should produce a scriptural text that authorised the practice. The orthodox accepted the third proposal and produced a text called Sankara Smriti in their defence. Gandhi doubted the authenticity of the text but promised to get back after consulting experts in the matter. Vallathol Narayana Menon confirmed that it was not reliable. The interaction with officials blunted the state suppression of the Satyagraha. As an outcome of Gandhi’s visit, the Satyagraha, rather than being directed against the state, sharpened into a struggle against social orthodoxy. Though it was formally withdrawn only eight months later.

The people who contributed the most to Kerala, are the ones to whom Keralites have no gratitude. It is a longstanding trend that has pervaded Kerala's political mind. Anything or any person of value, will be cut down to size.
The downfall of the Travancore Royal Family started when they were late to the game in investing and acquiring modern businesses like plantations, commercial banks, and manufacturing interests. By the time the royals thought about these things in the late 40s, the markets had already been taken over by the British and the Syrian Christians. In an ideal world, the royals should have become the largest plantation owners in Kerala, but they're far from it. There are private entities who own more land in Kerala today, than all the royals of Travancore combined.

They have never done anything for the common people of Kerala. If they have done something, then it's for their own use or their own people or the aristocrat class who worked for them. They never considered the majority of the Kerala population (80% of kerala population) as humans. They always thought that they are untouchables never allowed them even in the roads that these people use. Even after "Gandhi Ji" came in person to her palace and requested the Queen for allowing Dalits and other backward casts to be allowed in the Temple, she denied. She famously said, "I am just a care taker. When the King (who was a kid at that time) grows up, we will see" if she really cared for the common people of the Kerala, then she should have allowed it on that same day at-least. Yes, eventually it happened, thats not because of their mercy. It's after the hard fought Sathyagragas of the common people. These are the same royal people who collected breast taxes according to the breast size of the low caste women in order to cover their breasts. How disgusting. They looted the poor people by collecting inhuman Taxes. While the common poor people worked in paddy fields and other menial jobs and paid the taxes, these people built palaces and lived as kings and queens with the looted money. Its utter waste to glorify these useless rulers.

What you are talking. That was a society formed and concreted centuries before her time. Even an emperor was a small pawn in that society. But her level she has done many things for the oppressed. Many kings were like that. Ayyan Kali, Kumaran Asan Tk Madhavan etc were the members of Sree mollam sabha. An institution like our current assembly. Actually they were better than many of the wealthy dalith leaders.

So unfortunate that there isn't a memorial of Smt Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai thampuratti!! Why Chitira thirunal didn't make one ? He could easily build one,as he was the Raja pramukhan!! His mother Amma Maharani Sethu Parwati Bai wouldn't have agreed to build one. Obviously 😑
I am disappointed with only one aspect of Sethu Lakshmi Bai. Thampuratti had stopped "Deva" dasi nritam. But it was stopped considering as Cheap or bad during the time of Swati Thirunal....with the help of Thanjavur brothers!!He rejuvenated and gave back a respectful status to the danceform. Swati Thirunal himself wrote lots of padams. Tanjavur brothers had arranged classical dances for these padams!! Swati Thirunal gave patronage to art, music& dance forms!! This danceform later on ,with the help of Vallathol, became known as Mohinyattam.
Sethu Lakshmi Bai (Sethu Parvathi Bai too)had lot of Western influences. The move of degrading this dance form and banning this danceform is an example of that mindset.
Even Kerala Mural paintings were not promoted properly during that period. even though Raja Ravi Varma was a great mural artist, he was attracted to western paintings.
Thank God, after 100 odd years, we have realised the greatness of this artform and, artists started exploring the details ,nuances & uniqueness of this artform. Now a days by using natural colours, Kerala mural artists have resurrected the ancient art form.
The British ruling broke the important link, which connects us to the ancient art& dance forms. ...but they couldn't destroy it.
Gradually we are realising our traditional artforms, which are very much connected to nature!!
The colours, our ancestors used for mural art were eco-friendly and environment friendly. But we were not aware of it and started using acrylic, which are hazardous chemicals!!
Instead of learning our ancient scriptures, British / English learning was given to them( the Thiruvithamkur royals).. because British thought that India will be their for ever!!
The real patriot was Pazhassi Raja. He fought against British till his death!!
Even now Kerala hasn't build a grand memoriam for the great King!!

History says the vast masses of Hindus who were oppressed by the Hindu kingdom, struggled and revolted against it for years. Many had to even make supreme sacrifices to attain their inalienable right of worship of their Deity Divine at the temples maintained by the kingdom. Now the granddaughter remorselessly giving credit to the Maharani as if it was her gratuitous favour to those who were kept oppressed for centuries by her and her kind! What a joke!!

What is your perception on the tax system which was implemented by Travancore kingdoms ?
    -Tax on breast size
    -Head tax
    -Ornaments tax
There was a problem of 120 different inhuman taxes which was implemented by Travancore kingdoms to the lower class people in 17th, 18th and till 19th century. Nambudiri Bramhin was the main culprit in that. Why didn’t you people research or speak on on this ?
