HELMET SAFETY - ARE ATHLETES/FIGHTERS MAKING SMART CHOICES OR ARE WE JUST BEING DUMMIES??

  • Second video in a row on helmets and this time talking specifically about safety, eyes bars, and perf plate protection.
Should fighters be the ones determining safety? On an individual basis? Group consensus? What have other sports done when faced with these concerns?

Totally agree! Love your insights and observations. Our world is much too reactive about safety instead of being proactive.

Love seeing talks about safety in the sport. Funny enough I never even considered the argument that wolfribs could just be outlawed, which I think is a bummer but a fair argument. I've talked with my team about this before and I think the only reason HMB and other governing bodies haven't gone through and allowed extra eye bars is because I think it will fully shift the equipment meta. Wolfribs are pretty popular right now and I think the only thing that stops most fighters from switching over is the higher risk involved, so if extra eye protection was allowed in the current rules we would probably see a huge shift to wolfrib helmets and huge drop in variety.

I think it's unlikely they will get banned. I'm just saying that would at least be consistent if safety is a priority. They can also be made safer and in the US many people do add the extra safety bars.

Another great video. Important underlying message on the importance of confidence and ego to competition. "We believe that we're going to be safe, because we believe we are good, because we think we are good, if we don't think we're good then we can't fight."

Great video. I never once worried about my eyes in the Wolfrib. Honestly, I'm more worried about a concussion or jacking up my neck, than a rogue shot through the ribs. I actually teach kids classes and we change the rules for kids to make it safer. Foam weapons only for example. Very good points about historical accuracy.

I honestly think the eye risk is heightened if you are a duelist more than anything. Much more risk of a stabbing strike. I've seen 3 close calls and all were during duels.

I am new to this sport and this video is so perfect. I should be able to be as safe as I want with my helmet (extra eyebars for wolfrib) and others can do what they want. It's insane to me that others give a shit cause authenticity, yet make a whole bunch of concessions already. This sport does not pay well for the vast majority and you just pray that the risk you are taking doesnt end up as something permanent and you have good health insurance.

I don't know anyone that this sport pays well for. I will say it costs less to participate once you have your armor. Other sports I've played have high tournament or league fees. But yet, safety means you can fight more and train better.

I believe the comment you are referencing was a post by Josh about him saying wolfribs should be banned but he fights in one at his own risk. I queried that as it’s against the logic of the arguement.
The biggest issue this sport has one items such as this, is that there isn’t a single, cohesive and recognised body that everyone, worldwide will sign up to in order to bring homogenous change.
IMCF, BL, ACS and god knows how many more rules/organisations and leagues will come in future and this will continue to hinder cohesiveness on these aspects in my opinion.
    Great video as always

Thank you. I think it was Josh who made that comment. That is my point. People are not logical. We can know that something is safer overall but athletes will always do what they can get away with. They want the performance benefit and believe that nothing bad will happen ..this time. Humans are terrible at evaluating risk. Josh knows this and even knows his own personal bias. I'm no different. The problem is when everyone thinks nothing will happen to them eventually someone is wrong and a point ends up in someone's eye

Some people find the Joy and Spark of the activity comes from the danger. The Heart Pounding, I can get messed up DANGER... makes some folks feel alive.
I say waivers and good insurance are the only standards that are needed ( I know that is a simple way of saying it.) at the Minimum. Safety measures can be self imposed, and should be accepted by the organization.
    Great Video!

Thrill of danger and safety so the sport can grow are different issues to me. There is plenty of injury danger in this sport. Eyes are a different animal for me. Glad you liked the video!

Waivers are not iron clad legal protections. If a governing body has knowledge that certain equipment is safer and chooses not to use it, they open themselves up to some big liability. The defense (historical accuracy) goes out the window when you see all of the allowances and accommodations they have made in other ways.

You get it. What we do individually doesn't mean we are being smart and what the rules should reflect.

I would love it if all those additional safety things were allowed but not required. Maybe have it so wolfribs are required a minimum of 1 eye bar but u may have up to 3 and u may also add perf plate or plexi. I'd like to have 2 eye bars on mine but ya they only allow 1 sadly.

    • @woodchuckknight7820
      @woodchuckknight7820  ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think that's the issue as I see it. The athletes never want anything that impedes short term performance. It should be on the organizing body to look at the long term safety and sustainability first. When I'm fighting I want less eye bars and things too in the moment. I just worry that someday if this sport does go more mainstream someone losing an eye at a high profile event could damage the sport as well as the injured fighter

i find it strange when someone's only argument is authenticity against eye bars and perf plate. I don't think those add-ons really change the look of the armor from a spectators stand point to have the sport all of a sudden be filled with the dreaded "fantasy armor". I understand not allowing lord of the rings armor but eye bars and perf plate are really harmless especially if they are blackened or painted black. also the extra eye bars and perf plate should be optional, if someone really doesn't like the extra coverage for one reason or another they shouldn't be forced to use it.

@@woodchuckknight7820 I'm in South Carolina. Have no idea if the sport is active at all down here, as from what I've seen so far, it mostly seems like a New England thing. I'm going to be moving up to Wisconsin soon, and hope that the sport might be a bit bigger there.

I’ve been involved in the sport in some capacity since 2009, an I can tell you back in the day we allowed open faced helmets. An out of the injuries over the years the worst injuries was someone stepping in a hole on the field and snapping a femur and in the Americas when a helmet came off and an axe still found the head. I can think of several eye injuries, only two involving wolfribs, the rest were normal helmets where a point found it away in.
If I was to have a problem with wolfribs/fishbone helmets it’s that they are not being worn with appropriate kit, all 30+ images show them with full plate. Simply sticking to authenticity standards in that regard will eliminate most people from using them. But that’s a whole mess about sportification, and is a separate but related conversation

As for your point on safety I agree, however I do think it should be balanced with historical accuracy. With the new full plate category (I’m not sure what the rule set ended up being called, most of my later involvement has revolved around the eastern kits), the perf plate or oculars with narrow openings are now standard with the allowing of thrusts, unfortunately it has also to this point Ignored other groups that have been allowing thrusts for over a decade when coming up with safety standards.
