I got the spec’d out version of this bike with Di2 and reserve carbon wheels and she is a beast! Fast, responsive, comfortable, just the best carbon bike and it’s beautiful! We don’t have any problems keeping up with the S5s and Tarmacs in our group. Zoooom!!!

Same here. Picked up my Ultegra Di2 Gold Flake last week. The bike is insanely fast and smooth. I upgraded to an Enve AR bar and stem. Just waiting on the GP5000s TR to come and it'll be perfect!
@@hikerbikeromar You mentioned putting on some aero wheels. What rim depth do you think would be a good pair for the frame given that it’s a good balance of weight and speed?
@@normanderson01 I think I would do the same with the Enve bar/stem. We’re you more concerned with the aero efficiency or the weight or dampening?
@Nels Dale, great questions! Over the years, I’ve come to find 48mm rim depth the perfect compromise between weight and aerodynamics. Moreover, I’ve found that anything above 48mm starts to be more difficult to control in crosswinds, and confident bike handling becomes much more important.
Regarding the aero bars, for me it was really more of a value thing. The aero bars that the higher specced versions of this bike ship with are a more expensive carbon fiber, so the weight is reduced, and I just wish Cervelo would have just made the aero bars standard on all the versions just to increase the value a bit. The actual aero watt savings I’m sure are so minimal, so I am not worried about that at all. Even the weight savings is pretty minimal. The only real reason I would now spend the money to switch to aftermarket aero bars are for comfort since the palms have a wider platform to rest on, and for looks :)
I ended up getting the Cervelo Caledonia with the full mech 105 groupset, including the crank, for $3200. It's basically the endurance version of the soloist but fast when you want it to be. Great bike and great review.

I got the same bike in size 48cm and upgraded to Ultegra Di2 12 speed!
This would be my very first carbon bike coming from Trek Emonda ALR 5 and all I could say is DAMN, this thing is a beast!
Unfortunately, I live in a very cold city and I only got to use the bike for only 700km so far but I can't wait to ride the crap out of it next year!

Great overview. I think the 105 mech is a great choice to ride as is or build from. Then Ultegra Di2 if you want something out the door with no upgrades needed. I would skip the middle builds.

This is literally what I did! I purchased the stock 105 mechanical a month ago and immediately upgraded to Ultegra Di2 and installed the 65mm aero wheels from my aluminum bike and it rides like a dream! Just waiting on my Easton EC70 Aero Handlebars and the build would be complete :)

Bought this exact bike in alpenglow size 51. This is my first road bike (coming from an aluminum fixie). I wasn't looking for this exact bike, it found me (thanks supply chain shortages) but man do I love it.
Based on your review, you are spot on. I got this bike because of one reason only, i want to go fast. And aerodynamic is where it shines based on my strava downhill segments info. I usually have the top time on my local hills avg around 44 mph. That's without much pedaling too. Just letting the bike and the hill do the work.
But like I said man spot on review. I appreciate your opinions and honesty. Earned a new subscriber.

Really wanted that Gold Dust color. But that one is hard to find with the 105 set up from what I've seen. But all good.
I'll be buying the GP5000 soon too once I put at least 1000 miles on the stock tires. Your other video sold me on that easy weight savings hack.

@@Shadowboost the alpenglow has a nice pearl white that glistens with a reddish pearl color under the sun. The cervelo logo also has reddish-brown color pearls under the sun but looks black otherwise.

Should a novice racer buy this? YES! It's ALL you need. When I was a Cat. 2 riding steel Pinarellos with Campagnolo Chorus back in the 90s, this would have been the best bike in the world.

@@hikerbikeromar I have not ride in over 7 years plus I am disabled. I was able to do 28 miles for starters. The bike felt great and I’m hoping to get much stronger and faster. I had a 14 mile average with slight elevation.

I agree I wish it had 105 crank, but I can't think of any aero carbon bike at this price point. A couple hundred bucks delta seems chump change when you mentioned it.
Canyon aeroad
The manufacturers make me sick when I see bikes like this. It's full of landfill parts for a high price of $3400! You get Alex rims? Who? $200-300 wheels retail. You don't even get full mechanical 105. I can buy that saddle for less than $30. Basic cheap handlebars and terrible tyres for that price. Realistically, that bike is a $2000 bike or less. Cyclists need to wake up, and I include myself!
Don't buy it. Theyre selling plenty of them without you.

Hmm, I haven’t heard anything negative about durability. Tons of people in my local bike group ride the soloist, and it’s been nothing but excellent. That was also my experience too.

The seat post indeed is offset by 15mm. Size 48 and 51 are the only 2 sizes that come with a 0 offset seat post.
Yes it is hard to believe that a $3400 bike can't even get a matching crank. A perfect counter to this is Canyon CF SL8 you reviewed 6 months ago. One thousand cheaper & better Ultegra FULL groupset not to mention a kg + lighter ...Bike industry is out of control price wise I think & try to convince folks this is somehow better?
I agree! The soloist is an awesome bike but it is going to get increasingly difficult to start recommending bikes if the prices continue to climb.

I was looking at the Soloist as a frame only. Retails for $2,700. Every reviewers says, if the S5 and R5 had a baby it would be a Soloist. They all say it. Direct from Cervelo marketing I guess. I haven’t heard any reviews explain how two $5,800 parents produce a $2,700 offspring. Is the price of the S5 and R5 inflated? Or is the soloist inferior to its parents? Perhaps a little bit of both.

colnago v3 with Shimano DI2 Ultegra vs Soloist Dis Ultegra?
I've built myself a 2,800EUR bike lighter than the Cervelo Soloist, R5 and S5. More lighter cheaper and aerodynamic than any of the 2023 models. How can I claim that? I also own a Cervelo S5 disc.
I bought used parts everybody gave up to buy into the disc brake hype.
The Soloist looks almost exactly like my 2020 S3.

Excellent question! I’ve found that the soloist is a bit more comfortable in terms of stiffness. It’s not quite as stiff as the S3. I’d say the S3 is a faster bike but not as comfortable. The Soloist is still fast though, and still stiff enough! It’s a good compromise between stiffness and comfort. The S3 on the other hand, is strictly about speed, and the ride quality can be a tad harsh at times.

I love the look too! A few other options that come to mind: Canyon Aeroad, Trek Madone, Cervelo S5 - those are some of my favorite. However, it’s becoming more and more common now, so most manufacturers have at least one option in that style.

I’m looking to add a road bike to stay in shape for MTB. I’m 63 so I’m not looking to win any races. Been looking at some Treks so do you think for my age would the Domane SL5 be a good choice or would you recommend something else in the low $3K price range? Thank you so much for watching! Yes I think the Domane would be PERFECT for you. I ride a domane and absolutely love it. It's super comfortable while still being quite fast if you put the right tires and innertubes on it. The only other options that come to mind for that price range would be a Canyon Aeroad, but those are going to be a bit more aggressive and are race bikes after all. So I think the Domane is the absolute best choice for you (and most people frankly). Thanks again!

Comparing this bike to other brands like canyon, cube, rose. I can see that is not worth it. Many other brands give much more for the money, with full components of high quality. At this price you can get full Ultegra.

It’s looks like my Cervélo S2 but with Disc brakes and Wider tyres 😂.
Any idea what a stock 105 with pedals on a 51cm frame would weigh? 19lbs+ seems heavy.
It's hard for me to say, but my guess is it would be very close to 19 lbs exactly, but perhaps a tad under.

What is the difference between the saddle and the handlebar? I measure 6 feet with an 87 cm inseam, the height of my saddle is 78.5 cm.

Right now I am traveling, so I am not able to measure my bike’s particular geometry, but from your height and inseam, I would almost certainly say you’d want a size 56. I am 6’1 with an 87 inseam as well, and I can fit on either a 56 or a 58, I prefer 56. In fact, 56 is nearly perfect for me.

Hey man! So I just measured, my saddle is 80 cm high from the middle of the chainring to the top most point of the saddle.
And then the distance between the handlebar and the very tip of the seatpost is 67cm.

Great question! Spec for spec, the Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 is a better value, as long as you don’t mind rim breaks. It’s lighter and got better components. If you are new to road bikes, you’ll probably prefer the Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8.

What made you go with the 56 instead of the 58?
That’s a good question. I can fit both sizes pretty well. I went 56 because I like the benefits of a smaller frame for the race geometry. Easier to transport, a bit lighter, and not as stretched. But most bike fitters would put me on a 58.
@@hikerbikeromar Can you tell me how tall you are? I am 1,88m (about 6'2'') with quite long legs and arms, and everyone tells me I should ride a 58. My current bike is a 56, and I went for that because as you called it, I felt too stretched on the 58. Not sure whether my occasional pain in the back comes comes from that though 🤔.
And BTW, awesome review 👍, I'll definitively consider buying the 105 Di2 version. And replacing the crank set right from the start...
Hey man, I’m almost as tall as you, at 6’1. I am told by several bike fitters that I am in between sizes of 56 and 58. But 58 on any Cervelo almost always gives me palm pain and pain/numbness on my underside. 56 doesn’t give me any such pain, but it puts a little more strain on my neck since it’s not as upright.
Hmm, I’ve been told that back pain is usually a result of a frame being too big. Is it upper back pain, or lower back pain?

Interesting! My local bike fitter told me that’s usually a symptom of the bike being too big, but I wonder if I’m your case it has to do with the saddle height. Hopefully over time it will get better!

All Shimano cranksets look the same to me. There's nothing visually special about them. 105 or not, it looks the same.
