  • This is a detailed video of us running a smelter to make steel from magnetite. While some of the preliminary processes are absent from this film, I hope there is enough of the actual smelt to give you a good idea of the methods involved.
    As curators of the art of smelting, we feel it is our duty to keep the knowledge alive and spread it to the ends of the Earth. Human beings have been losing the ability to create, due to automation and large industry. Carrying on this tradition of the current age is important not only for the ability to smelt, but to use and offer the materials required to make historical and traditional tools and blades.

    This is great! Enjoyed it. Thanx. I've smelted copper from azurite/malachite this way but never iron. Its on my to do list.

      It was pretty typical of what we usually pull from the smelter. If you look through my uploads, I have several smelts shown that show us segmenting. Its a whole different world, and video after that.

    Do you have a chart or guide on how to make normal iron blooms versus high carbon blooms, etc.? Thanks!

    "being behind the scenes" I know what you mean. After running a few smelts myself, I couldn't find any videos of me (to show to family), except, like you, my backside.

    Can you add some type of flux when necessary to help liquefy the slag?

    Hi. Do you crucible your steel after you take it out of the furnace?
    Thank you.

    Did it(magnetite) lose its magnetic property after smelting ? you had done it, i hope you can tell.
    Thank you
    Since it's natural magnet hence the question.

      Yes but Iron is also magnetic so if you wanted to make the iron bar into a magnet you could.

    I'm a complete newbie at this sort of thing, but I live in part of Oklahoma where the soil is very red. I have a strong mind to extract the magnetite I know I can get with magnets and process it into knife-worthy steel.
    Can you point me to the information I'd need to get started?

    Has anyone ever run a smelt using mill scale as a iron source? Every smith makes tones of it and it's pure iron oxide.

      With Magnetite we add silica sand and mix it in.

    So how long does this process take exactly?

    • @DanielCauble
      @DanielCauble  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4-6 hours in this style furnace to smelt. Typically a week of prep prior, and weeks of refining the iron or steel.

      awesome! because i was thinking about doing a project like this with Bog iron but was worried about whether or not i would need to treat it either as an overnight camping adventure, or just a day at the forge.

    There has to be an easier way than using these chimney furnaces.

    • @bilbo_gamers6417
      @bilbo_gamers6417 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is, use an arc furnace and instead of smelting iron from ore, just melt down old cars and get the iron that way. Much easier, that's why factories do that nowadays.
