Hey everyone! Welcome back again! I decided to put out a video based on a lot of comments I have gotten in the past so that’s what I did. I hope this helps some of you and if you like me to go more in detail on a certain subject, leave me a comment and let me know. Stay safe and I’ll see you all in the next one! 👍🏻
A respirator is only really needed for certain alloys. This video was only about the basic setup. For a small amount of aluminum melting outside a respirator is not necessary
I got the electric smelter off amazon and the review you left is what made me pull the trigger on it but I hear the crucibles only last about 4 melts is that true? And if so do you know of any that last alot longer?
I've always wondered how much it would cost to start doing this stuff. Thank you so much for making this breakdown. It's honestly much cheaper than I was expecting. I work in the theatre / production field and we often build, buy, or get donated all sorts of items that we only use for a month or so before it's on to the next production so I'm always looking for ways to recycle used lumber, metal, etc. So knowing the entry cost is affordable is really encouraging! Love all of your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much Adrock! I've been making a Google slides to show my parents and to try and convince them to buy me a furnace. This gives me so much info
@@tyttuut If it's pure copper you should be fine, but if its scrap copper there will often be a bit of plastic and other things in there for example if it's stripped wire there may be little pieces of plastic that got missed or pipe may contain something inside of it, also some copper alloys contain lead or zinc which will release fumes etc. Your probably better off wearing protection and not needing it than not wearing it and finding out your copper was contaminated.
Great video and breakdown Adrock, thank you! P.S. In my area you have to buy the propane tank for the first fill, then afterward you just pay for refills. If you want more than one tank on hand you have to buy a tank for each extra you want to have available. The tanks here cost around $60.
Great video! My suggestion, could you start adding about how many lbs of petrobond you use for your casting videos? Like the flask you showed in this one, how much petro will it hold? When you poured the tongs, how much was used. --- also on petro, nobody is showing how they separate the used sand and how the clean up of used/unused petro is done. I know it's not cheep so every grain counts! Thanks again for the information!
Great video Adam! Thanks for breaking this down for us. Do you notice a difference in outcome when using green sand vs. petrobond sand for your castings? I would love for you to do a video breaking down your vinyl printing and etching. I want to cast some brass and etch it like I have seen you do with acid but don’t know how you do the vinyl.
Brother I love your videos but I would love to see and learn more about the investment casting. Like all the parts needed to get started doing it and maybe links as to were I can start ordering items from. Thanks and keep up the good work
I can fill my #60 propane tank here for 30$. I melted four 55 gal drums full of crushed cans and it's still not empty. Maybe my cost for propane is less per gallon. The gloves I got because I'm a volunteer fireman and I got good gloves and think that is the best. They are layered inside and still get really hot. Ouch from experience. LoL great video and I thank you for all your help and advice.
Glad I can help. Obviously this is just a quick breakdown and there are other variables that come into play but this is the basics. I plan on going over more down the road but just wanted to help get people started 👍🏻
Great vid. I have quite a bit of scrap copper to melt but still dont have a setup. Was thinking about getting the devils forge like you and the 8lb crucible. Just havent got at it yet
My molds are old cast iron bread pans that I recovered from the dump. My tongs are repurposed fireplace tongs. I got the next size down furnace, and use the transfer sites (dumps) for my metal scraps.
I actually cut that out as it’s not necessary for a basic setup. For certain alloys yes it is important but for most cases it’s not. Especially when melting outside in the open
First off I thought you were just Hands and Tools 🤣😂 didnt realise you had the rest of the body aswell 🤣😂 and dont get me started on you having a voice too...... Just Kidding 🤣😂 Awesome video bro. Thanks for the run down on total costs needed. 🤜🏽🤛🏽 LOVE YOUR WORK BRO 🤜🏽🤛🏽😁
Just bought my son a new smelting furnace. I was told i needed to coat it with Ceramic Fiber Rigidizer and let that dry. Do i add anything else before or after applying?
Thank you for the video. I have started melting aluminum and copper is forthcoming. The only thing I need to buy is filters for my respirator which I got from work. What kind of filters are needed for brass, lead, and zinc? Thank you in advance. Stay safe and have a great day.
I got question Does Petra bond Gets black when you’re kissing everything do you still use it when it’s black or mix it up, And still use it anytime? All the black burns when you’re casting?
Thanks for this video! It was great getting that break down. I will be getting into this for scrap recycling, but its good to have the list. Could you do or quickly let me know, 1) where do you run your furnace? I see some home people run it from the garage, does the heat cause damage to garage doors etc, 2) what about toxic fumes and a respirator? does it create excessive smell or smoke? Thanks!!!
I run mine either in the backyard or the garage. It won’t damage the garage door but I wouldn’t recommend it in the garage if melting brass. The zinc fumes will create a lot of smoke and then yes you will need a respirator. For just aluminum though you’ll be just fine. Your garage will get awfully hot though so I’d at least open the door. Don’t leave it closed
Good job, awesome video, helpful for beginners. many thanks for your recognition of our ToAuto Electric melting furnace. If the gas cost is higher in some countries, ToAuto electric smelter is a good choice, and more convenient to use at home.
@@woodworkingandepoxy643 If the temperature 2 inches away from your face is hot enough to melt a plastic face shield something has gone horribly wrong. We wear plastic goggles while firefighting and they basically say by the time they are melting your already dead anyway.
Thanks so much for the informative video! I am wondering about pressure on the propane. I have seen hosts of other videos adjusting pressure based on the type of metal being melted. Is this something you can address? Thanks again for all your content!
Do they make natural gas furnace? How long will itbe take you to get your money back if you was selling your melts? Great informative clip. You forgot the mask!!
Eye protection even if you already wear glasses. A hot spark hits your lens and you're paying a few hundred for new glasses. Yes, I know from personal experience.
Would any size fire extinguisher be a good investment? In case of unexpected whoopsies can always happen. If they didn't then insurance wouldn't exist ohho ;)

Can you also make a new lifting tongs out of aluminum bronze
Forgot to mention a respirator I think ...very important for safety.

I’ve used mine for about 15 melts so far and it’s still fine. There is some wear but not bad enough yet to need a new one.
Recently ordered a 4kg Devil Forge. Arrived yesterday for my birthday. 😁
Now I just need pretty much everything else to start melting.
Ah the FB1SB 💪🏻 enjoy it and work safe mate ✌🏻🔥🔥🔥

This is the one I’ve been waiting for! Thanks so much. This all feels really within reach now.
Eye protection and a respirator as well (for copper, zinc etc).
Why do you need a respirator for copper?
@@tyttuut The fumes given off by copper are dangerous.
@@vaughndumas What fumes? I've never had any trouble melting copper.
@@tyttuut That's good. It's just that every melter so far (ArtbyAdrock, BigstackD and IngotJoe) all wear protection when working with copper.

Bruh, awesome video. How’s about a video on sand casting for beginners. Perhaps with an emphasis on foam? You do you. Great video.
This was awesome. I have gathered most of what you covered. I would like too see how you make the graphite moulds you sell

I’ve considered to get a furnace to sinter prints printed from an FDM printer which is slightly cheaper than paying to have something sintered
You've got me seriously considering the baldy.
It's a hobby !! You not gonna get rich !!
It’s been a long time since I’ve poured anything (1993 in college). Do you use a face heat shields and respirator?
Might sound odd but from this could it do like tungsten? Or is it a metal for only industrial
When say sand is there a certain type of sand?
How do you get the custom name on the side and top of the furnace? I have seen that bigstackd has his name on it also
Devil-forge is one of our sponsors so they did it for us
Fair enough lol. Well then I won't look to hard to figure it out. Thanks for letting me know.

Copper and aluminum are very easy to find.
Don't forget the fridge full of Beer after the job is done 👍😍🍺
Cost of that mini-electric oven?
Great video. I would only add, a face shield to protect from steam explosions.
Face shields are usually made from acrylic or plastic. That steam would be hot enough to melt it to your face if it's reached melt point

Eye protection even if you already wear glasses. A hot spark hits your lens and you're paying a few hundred for new glasses. Yes, I know from personal experience.
One thing you skipped is a respirator. As we both know some metals when melting can be toxic and not healthy.
