  • Rota Vicentina/Fisherman’s Trail Day 6: Aljezur to Carrapateira, 31km (April 2023)
    Lodging: Hostel do Mar, 22 euros
    Despite this being another long stage, the day felt like a true walking vacation. A mix of beautiful countryside and gorgeous coastline, cool air and a warm sun, a perfectly timed café (seemingly in the middle of nowhere), a break on a beach and a chance to walk along the ocean’s edge- my toes in the cold water, my feet sinking into the wet sand. Sangria and a sunset and sometimes it feels like it doesn’t get much better!

    I do love that you are finding Eucalyptus trees on your travels. I'm Aussie and the majority of Eucalypts are native to Australia. Just one thing, avoid walking beneath them when it's windy. They have a habit of dropping heavy branches injuring and killing people. In Aus they are known by the nickname of Widow Maker

    0:35 Thanks for this video Nadine. I travelled this route 3 weeks ago and had basically the same experience. GR11 vs FT options, up & down Camino-like, Alpaca 'mirage', sand!, views to die for, oasis with beer 🤪 and the lovely Hostel do Mar 🤩

    That was a wonderful woodland landscape! Love that cafe oasis you found--was that a swimming pool? Really nice-looking hostel. What a dinner shot!

    Hi there. Fantastically useful videos. We are busy doing the Fisherman's route now. Our next stage is Arrifana to Carrapeteira. Could i ask you where that refreshment station was located? The one with the chalk board advertising beer, wine etc. Many thanks!

      How great that you’re on the trail right now!! The refreshment stop will be about halfway through the stage, close to a place called Monte Novo. I think the name of it (it’s a guesthouse but serves food and has a nice outdoor area) is Barranco da Fonte, if you want to try to look it up. It’s directly on the route so you can’t miss it!

    Another great video. I have my very first long hike coming up on the 28th of May. Walking the Kerry Way it's a 9 day hike. You inspired me to actually get up and book it. So thank you. Keep been your magical self ✨️

      While I DID get confused several times on these stages, I was never lost! This route is extremely well way-marked and I always basically knew where I was, I just needed to make sure I was on the right track since there were several ways to go. And sometimes my confusion was just funny! So luckily I was never nervous that I was getting myself far off track.

      Once i lost in mountain track and its getting darker, so i started nervous bit, so i just get beck with same route to point i was sure the track was correct, and found that there is route if i take right few meters, i just missed it because it was darker. After that i never worry about lost route, because i know that i always can return back with the same)

    Hi, Thank you a lot for your wonderful videos. Usually what is the best time to arrive to the place to sleep to reserve a good place to sleep ? 3pm? 5pm?

    • @NadineWalks
      @NadineWalks  ปีที่แล้ว

      For this walk I reserved my beds ahead of time- I was walking during the Easter holidays and the trail was busier than usual for springtime, and I was glad to have reserved my beds! With a reservation I don't think it mattered too much when I arrived- I usually arrived by mid/late afternoon (I think if I were arriving later in the evening I might have called or sent a message to confirm the reservation) Also, most places didn't open until mid-afternoon!

    Hi, thanks for the video! I will be doing stages 1-3 in a month. Do you think it is possible to wear low hiking shoes ? I hear hat high shoes are preferable because of sand but I am worried they can be too hot😅

    • @richeretrudeau226
      @richeretrudeau226 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the whole trail in Altra lone peaks 6 and a pair of gaiters without any blisters. Wear balm before putting on your Injiji separate-toe socks and use Moleskin and/or Leukotape as a preventive solution when needed. Everyone I saw wearing boots had a lot of blisters and it looked so painful. Happy trails!

    • @NadineWalks
      @NadineWalks  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with Richère... I wore low hiking shoes with gaiters (my first time ever using them!) and I thought it was the perfect combo. Well, I wear the same model of hiking shoes on all my long walks, so I already know they work for me, but the gaiters were key in preventing sand from getting into my shoes!

    How did you navigate this walk? App, guidebook, etc.

    • @NadineWalks
      @NadineWalks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I plan to make a video about planning for this walk, but mostly I just researched ahead of time, made a few notes on my stages, where I was staying… and then just followed the signs along the way! There was a guidebook in my first hostel, as well as a map of the route, and I took pictures of those to help me if I needed it. The map was useful- I didn’t really need it to navigate, but it helped to see what was coming up!
