    People value quantity of pixels and sharpness over the quality or details these days. The OG bmpcc has a larger pixel pitch/photosites than most newer DSLR/pocket4k/6k sensors. but not quiet close to the ARRI Alexa cinema cameras. In factor the sensors in the OG pocket has similar dual gain technology to the Alexas. which gives it that organic film texture that you might find in alexas/celluloid cameras that you cant find in the Sony based sensors which most cameras used nowadays.

      That's really interesting, I didn't realise that, that was the reason behind it. But for sure, they have a unique look that far outstrips most other cameras with huge pixel counts. My only wish is that it had some kind of IS, that would make it my go to camera for everything.

    This camera is AMAZING but there is a huge problem with storage. Most people keep recommending this camera and they don't mention how the best SD card to record raw was discontinued and its a pain to find it. Maybe there is another option out there I never heard about but this is the only reason stopping me from getting this camera.

    Neat review AJ. You nailed it by detailing the shortcomings of BMPCC. We used the 6k on a feature documentary in December last year primarily mounted to a vehicle through the desert (off road etc). The camera had to spin using a ps4 controller via Ronin-S (we all geeked out pretty hard at the great results). We were all surprised just how amazing the image quality was so it made us reconsider the value of the BMPCC6k for future work. However, like Sony, the battery life was terrible. It would die after an average of 24 minutes! We had to tether a power cable (out of site) around the side of the vehicle to a Vmount setup. Short of that issue, it was a great camera.

    • @120fps
      @120fps  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No way, blackmagic sent out the 6k to us earlier this year. And for sure it’s mind blowing what it can achieve for only $2k but yeah the shortcomings are very short!! Battery life being right up there. Nice to hear some first hand front line experience with it too though.

    • @rodrrico
      @rodrrico 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@120fps I guess the only other drawback could be the huge files sizes. It took longer to backup footage than from the C700 on average, but we'd always kick it off in the evenings as 'set-and-forget'. If we weren't in the pandemic situation I'd very much consider buying a BMPCC6K as a B camera for documentary work.

  • @AdrianBond
    @AdrianBond 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    By George, you're absolutely correct. There IS something unique to the BMPCC that's missing in the 4K and the 6K. You helped me nail it - it's the Super 16mm sensor = filmic.

    • @120fps
      @120fps  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @AdrianBond
      @AdrianBond 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@120fps Yes, you really captured my unspoken thoughts about the BMPCC and its 4K/6K siblings - that though they are very clear, they've somehow lost the filmic look of the original. I was ready to upgrade myself, and had even thought, "Oh well, I know I'll come up with something to regain that certain quality I like about the original." But searched as I have far and wide on TH-cam, no 4K/6K footage really has that certain character of the original. Believe it or not, watching your video tonight made me actually PULL my eBay ad of my BMPCC down. I'm smiling as it's now back in my dry cabinet, and staying for good. I wouldn't be surprised if some day this little camera gains a cult following of sorts. What serendipity to come across your video! Good job, mate :)

      Man that’s really cool to hear. I just grabbed it out of the studio as I picked for the lockdown, just thought it would be a nice to play with. It instantly reminded me why I bought it in the first place. Was lucky enough to test out the 6k and although technically great, it’s just missing that character. I’m gonna go on a mission of moding this one. Anyway. Thanks again dude and good luck with your bmpcc

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Black magic switched sensor manufacturers from Fairchild sensors to Sony sensors for their more recent cameras. When they switched sensors, the cameras lost that filmic look. Especially on their lower priced models.

    • @AdrianBond
      @AdrianBond 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@120fps Yeah I've been watching hours and hours now of footage of BMPCCs, BMPCC 4K, BMCC 2.5K, BMCC 4K, and the Ursa 4.6K...and only the original BMPCC has that organic, filmic, truly cinematic quality. Some users have commented it's due to the Fairchild sensor used. What surprises me is how I didn't notice that before; it's baffling, really. Many people, in fact, have commented that only the original BMPCC has that cinematic quality, and I found quite a few who had sold their BMPCC only to re-purchase a used one later. Scary how close I came to selling mine; man, I would have been crazy disappointed later. Looking forward to hearing how you mod yours; hopefully you vlog about it. Best of luck to you, too! "video that affects you on an irrational level" great sentence that summurized great video !
    You nailed it just right man!!
    I would add that there is a big learning curve with this camera, i myself in the progress of learning how to produce high quality image out of it deapite the ultra narrow menu the camera provides. It might be that almost all control is on the cinematogrpher's shoulders.
    And I must also add that this camera LOVES a lot of light. Obviousely cause of small 16mm sensor , but maybe for additional reasons too. So.. we have to be very careful with light on the og.

    Nice review, AJ. I think the best use for 6 and 8K will remain for post-production zooming! Realistically, most consumers still watch 1080 - and even SD - and don't really notice. I've said it before and I'll say it again (yawn..) humans can watch noisy / grainy / juddery video, but the sound has to be right. We don't tolerate bad sound...but we will quite happily watch old films. The 'analogue' look is part of the reason I now shoot stills on film again - there is something aesthetically inherently pleasing about it that can't be captured by clinical digital cameras. (or replicated in editing!).

    • @120fps
      @120fps  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree Chris. Sound is everything for video, funny how it's over looked amongst the film community! Also, chasing specs for their own ends seems to be the flavour of 2020. I've got the S1H sat next to me here (on loan) and I'm more excited about this original BMPCC, it's the closest thing to a characterful digital video camera that you can get. I've been loving your move back to film, probably in-part inspired me to go down this rabitt hole!

    • @120fps

      There’s a few we go for. By far my favourite is converting old M42 lenses to the m4/3 Mount, they are super cheap and super gorgeous!! However we also get a lot of mileage out of using the canon 16-35 f/4 (the one with IS). Again you need to convert the mount (ef-m4/3) but totally worth it 🙌🙌

    • @wallemmedia
      @wallemmedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bit late but... from what I understood the crop on the sensor is almost 3x from the full frame, so a Lumix 12-35mm would be like 35-105mm basically - the most versatile IMO 😌

    • @120fps
      @120fps  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that’s right. MFT crop is heavy, but it is a defining characteristic of this type
      Of camera. You get used to the crop, and in truth you’re not buying this hoping for a full frame look. You’re hoping for the super-16 aesthetic and that’s totally what you get.
