Great tips! I believe I shall have to try a mousse soon. 😊 One additional "hack" that helped me a lot, was to "hack" (cut) off quite a bit from the length of my very fine, very low density hair, so now my hairdo is chin length. That greatly helped my hair to curl up better and also created more volume. I would prefer to have longer hair with lots of curls and volume, but that is realistically not going to happen for me as I quickly approach 76 years of age!
Gena's vid help no matter what. even when she is addressing a topic you THINK doesn't apply to your hair, you LEARN. this video explains WHY, which helps those of us who have different problems. each day my hair gets BIGGER (not longer). day three is my best day, day four is ponytail day, day five is either wash day OR "bun" day. i am still looking for the PERFECT strong hold for MY hair.
I think mousse gets a bad name! I had issues with my curls going flat every single night! My curls just smushed. I had to do major refresh every day. I decided to try mousse instead of gel and WOW! I had bouncy and bounce back curls and now go 3, sometimes 4 days with little to no refresh. I guess it is true that there is no ONE product that works for everyone 🥰 Hair is so personal.
@amandaantico78 You're gonna die! But I'm telling ya, I've tried almost all the high-end ones with differing ingredients. Seems MY curls love Polyquaternium-4. So, Herbal Essences Curl Boosting Mousse! IKR! Here's the funny. After posting a pic of my hair on day 3 on FB, everyone was asking what I used, and two of my friends bought it and now swear by it, too😆😂🤣 If cruelty free is imperative to you, I don't know how to help, sorry😌
A lot of mousse makes my hair stringy, but I'm currently loving the marc Anthony one from Walmart in the yellow can. I'm someone who prefers volume over definition.
I tried this routine yesterday using Curlsmith Invisible Volume Mousse and the Shine Gel 9 hold and it really worked for my fine hair. I refreshed this morning with water misting and I was impressed. I will definitely use this routine again. Thank you Gina.
Great video! Your hair looks amazing here! I recently tried the Curlsmith mousse and followed up with their strong hold hairspray, and while my hair looked great on day one, it was a different story on day two. On day two, my hair had lost the volume, was fairly frizzy, and my curls (especially the ends) were clumping together too much and quite tangled. I had slept with my hair in a pineapple and used a satin pillowcase, so it was well protected overnight. I have low porosity, fine hair, but high density. I’m going to try the Not Your Mothers mousse, as suggested here, and follow up with the Curlsmith hairspray again to see if I get longer lasting results. Hoping the stronger hold mousse does better for me. Thanks again!
Just want to say I finally decided to lean into my curls in my late 40s and I was at a loss what to do. I found your videos super helpful in my “curl journey” and have found products and techniques that work thanks to your advice! Thank you 😘
Your curls look amazing and the volume wow! So all the tips resonate with me especially me having fine curls all of what you said has worked for me! A brand I can never use is Shea moisture they all weigh down my hair soooooo bad! The hairspray tip is the best especially when I wash my hair with olaplex it leaves my roots so damn silky soft LOL the hairspray is chefs kiss!
Thank you so much for this video. My hair is thinning at the back and will likely continue to thin until I get through some medical stuff. So, I really appreciate the tips for having nice curls that don’t clump so much that the scalp shows between them. Especially your tip for brush styling in thin, horizontal clumps, shaking out the roots while wet. Also I’m going to try that Curl Smith hair spray - it made an immediate difference in your volume!
I have the same hair as you do and I can’t make it look like that. I don’t have the patience for all the brush styling and just don’t know what I’m doing, but you sure make me want to learn how to do it! Beautiful results!
Oh girl. Today wash was awesome following your hacks. Didn't have a mousse but use Umberto Jelly and CS aqua gel. I learn to use the mirror to cover my cowlicks. . I am 64 low density fine hair on top of that due to a new med, my hair shed a lot. Immediately took action CS Scalp line and everyday adding rosemary oil to my affected area and shedding stop. STOP THE MED TOO!!! Your hair looks stunning !
Hi, Gena ~ Today's styling/ treatments created so much shape and volume for you! I am eager to try this technique. Is it possible to teach us how to finger twirl to get the curl? 😊 Although I have product and water on my finger, my hair gets tangled on my finger, meaning i have to unwind the clumplet. 🙃 Thank you!
That NYMCT mousse gives me a lot of volume too. Like you, I tend to prefer hard hold gels though because it hold my waves in place with less refreshing throughout the week. That mousse tends to have product build up easily, and I can't refresh as easily with that mouse or their foam so have to wash my hair after only 2 days instead of the 5-7 I can get with gel. I guess it's a trade off :)
I tried to do this routine today. It did not go well. My hair responds better when I apply products on wet, not damp hair upsidedown in the shower and plop for 5-10 minutes. I also find leaving a little conditioner in helps. But it obviously works great for you!
The best gel that I use for my curly hair is Ouidad advanced climate control gel. It's the only product that I need, and I have the same texture hair as you. Your hair looks great❤
This is why I always use mousse :). Most times, just mousse, a spray leave in conditioner, and hair spray at the end. At lots of products weigh my hair down :(. I did find a spray gel I thinked thanks to you :).
Hi! Thanks for this. I have a question about drying hair. It takes my hair forever to dry. What temperature do you use when drying? Hot/warm/cold? And do you take breaks between drying and how dry do you get your hair before you let it air dry? Thanks for all your content!
I have slightly tighter curls than you. Will you do a video on how to ELONGATE curls? I’ve tried doing opposite of what you do, but that doesn’t always work.
There is a list in the description box below the video and I do a blog post with every video that has a list and a written summary of steps. That’s also linked in the description box below the video
@GenaMarie brilliant thank you ! I can't seem to get the curlsmith invincible volume in the UK? What would Be the best substitute to go for?..Also do you know of any discount codes ?
Pulsing is better than scrunching for me. Pulse hair close to the scalp and it will help with curl clumps and volume and keeping product and moisture in.
@@Downsjasmine slowly bring your hair into a scrunch and use a "pulsing" with your fingers. The key is slow and pulse. I feel like it's a softer way to scrunch. I hope that was helpful.
I’m curious…did your volume and curl hold until the end of the day and how did it look on day 2? I love mousse for the volume in my very low density hair. I’ve used Cake the Curl Whip with decent hold, but not great. Not liking the fragrance of the Not Your Mother’s line of products. Any other strong hold mousse recommendations??
When using a mousse, do you find you can still get several days before you need to wash? I use a mousse and gel and typically get 5 days with one refresh. Just courious if the mousse will hold up as long as a gel.
I really want to try applying my products to my hair right side up (versus upside down) but every time I have tried to do this, my hair just doesn't seem to have as much wavy definition (I have thin wavy hair) and/or the top part of my hair will look more or less straight and waves will only show at the bottom half of my hair:/ Is there still a way to apply products right side up with this "type" of hair?

I have an older video here but I can make a new one soon: th-cam.com/video/Qlp5qALWNJI/w-d-xo.html
With a new routine, It would also be great to see end of day and next day hair. Love the consultation plans too.
I have only tried a mouse once and had way too much frizz !! After watching your video I am going to give it another try!! Thank you!!
I’m gonna try doing the horizontal brush style on my under hair. Vertical on the top sections. Great tip.

Which spray? Thinking of buy the living proof phd advanced. TIA!
My thinning hair hates being wet styled and I can't style upside down for health reasons. THANK-YOU for these tips!
I want to try the hairspray at the root hack. I have that same Curlsmith hairspray, so I'm anxious to do that on my next wash day.
It works so well!
I just really don't want to get gel or mousse but it's feeling like I'm really going to have to lmao
Can you recommed a routine for fine but HIGH density curls?
Can you talk about medium porosity and what products we should use ? @GenaMarie

How often do you wash your hair? And leave in frequency ?
I wash about twice a week
I think the hairspray is up to $40 - ouch! I use Curlsmith and it IS WONDERFUL, but I wish they were more obtainable.
When you go for a trim do you style your hair or do you let the stylist do it?
I style it there
