    Thank you, Gena Marie! This is the BEST video I’ve ever seen for picking curly hair products. My hair was poker straight my entire life and it changed over to curly about three years ago. I’ve been at my wits’ end ever since. I don’t know anything about curly hair and I’ve wasted a lot of money on products that are not right for me. Love your videos and I’m excited about your new store. Thank you again! 😊🌻

    WOW thank you so much Gena this was incredible!! and the shop looks AMAZING!! Another aspect I’ve found I need to factor in with my hair is the amount of product your hair can handle. A lot of curly hair TH-camrs will use huge amounts of cream or gel or whatever, regardless of its weight, and so I was doing that too. But some people can only handle a pea size amount on their whole head! I’ve been meaning to overhaul my routine and your blog is going to be a life saver!!

    You are so right about the direction your hair naturally wants to clump. I find it is often alternative directions especially around the face.
    Sometimes I finger curl wet at night just a few around face and pop a bobby pin in for a special day.

    I would appreciate a video talking more in depth about choosing shampoos and conditioners, and especially deep conditioners. I used to use a deep conditioner from shea moisture occasionally and my hair looked fantastic afterwards regardless of which of a number of different styling products I used, but as I’ve had more grays come in over the years, it doesn’t give me the same results, and I’d like to know more about why. I also recently changed my shampoo and conditioner to a drugstore brand and have found my curls are drier, and again, I’d like to have insight as to what ingredients in the shampoo aren’t compatible with my hair.

    Awesome video! After years and years attempting to make the cgm work for me (since 2010!) About 4 years ago I realized that I had to focus on my hair texture, porosity and my desired look! I have ultra fine hair, medium density hair, with 3b with some 3a sprinkled around, and produce close to no oil on my scalp (if I wash more frequently than every 10 to 14 days, my hair does not like it!). Once I started using very light, water based products, and left behind the butters and creams, my hair really started to shine.
    However, Im probably the only fine hair girlie that does not desire volume, and just wants elongation of the curls, because I love my long hair! So the challenge was using light products, but giving the hair some weight, and the solution was to not diffuse it, and to avoid manipulating my hair too much while it dries. Oil helps, but even the oils I use are ultra light 😂 but the longer it gets, the heavier it gets so that helps!

    Okay, this was seriously one of the most helpful and thorough videos! I thought that illustration for porosity was one of the best ones I've seen and it looks like you made it?! I think that shop page you made is going to be amazing... no more saving IG posts where people list a couple products for lightweight/medium/heavy and then forgetting about it. It's obvious you put so much effort and care into all you do!

    I have been experimenting with my first layer of styling products. I LOVE the Ouidad ACC Stronger Hold gel, but I wanted something under it to help with volume. I haven't really found anything I really love yet, but this video definitely gave me some ideas!

    I ❤ your channel. I was just wondering about your hair today. Is this a refresh? It looks different. Soft on top and crisp and crunchy below. Last, but certainly not least, your shop with the filters is da bomb!! I freakin’ love it and can see using it often. I especially think I am going to like the filter that tells you about the consistency, which for me as a fine haired, low density curly girl is probably one of the most important things, aside from slip!! I really can’t believe that it took so long for somebody to come up with this…but I’m glad it was you! You’re awesome!!

    I split-dyed my hair before realizing that I have curly hair, and it has been quite the learning process! I have my natural colour on one side which is very very dark and I’m currently rocking rainbow on the other side, but because of how dark my hair is we did have to bleach it. The difference in quality on both sides is crazy! But I absolutely adore my split dye so I’ve been trying to have the best of both worlds and find a routine and products that work for me and give me the best curls I can have while also keeping my colour. These videos have been so so helpful and I’ve learned so much! My hairdresser (who I absolutely love) is not a curly girl but she has been right there by my side through my hair journey learning right alongside with me lol. I’ve actually recommended your channel to her because she has a lot of curly clients! I’ve learned from this video that I have thin hair, with low-med density and low porosity on my natural side and high porosity on my coloured side. Do you have any recommendations on how I should go about treating my hair when I fall on both extremes of the porosity scale? I suppose my biggest “problem area” would be my high porosity side, I just worry about my natural side since it get greasy super fast. And because of my colour, I’m afraid to use a clarifying shampoo because I want to keep my colour in as a long as possible. I already kind of split up my hair washing as I use only cool/cold water on my coloured side, but use warm water for the rest. Also! I live in Canada, where our summers get humid and our winters are dry. Lol, it just feels like all the qualities of my hair are at war with each other!!

    I love your videos Gena Marie! Always so informative and helpful - thank you! The one thing I haven’t found yet is information on gray hair. My sense is that it is coarser and higher porosity but that’s really just a guess. I just turned 69 and started embracing my 2B/2C curls a few years ago but was basically winging it with styling (sort of 😂) until I recently started watching your and some others’ videos. Any advice you could give about gray/graying hair would be very much appreciated.

    Awesome video! Thanks for continually helping me through my journey. I love your posts and am always eager for the next one. I am really struggling through my journey - I have straightened my hair for the last 20 years and also have colour treated hair. Some of my strands are really fine and others are super coarse (think horse tail!!!), and the front of my head is low density while the back is super dense. To top it all off, I live in a crazy dry climate. By the end of day 1, I look like I put my finger in a socket. Finding a product that works has been a real challenge. Have you tried LUS products? I’d love to see you do a wash day review of them. I would also love to see you review other products since you so often talk about Ouidad and Curlsmith but not as much about others. And yes, please keep providing helpful product info - this video was one of the ones I’m sure I will look back on many times.

    Hi!! What if I have a low porosity just when I start washing hair and then, I think, could be high once it’s soaking wet? Thank you in advance, you are so clear🫶🏻

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not possible as your hair would be the same porosity wet as dry. It's possible for certain areas to be different porosities, such as the top layer of your hair is often more damaged thus more high porosity, or the hair at the roots is lower porosity because it's virgin/new growth.
      If you feel it's low porosity because water beads up, you could just have buildup. Your hair could be low porosity as well

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't avoid them, I just make sure that if it's humid I am using a product that contains polyquaternium in addition to the humectants. Using a gel that is full of just humectants and no polyquats would cause frizz in humidity.

    Normally, I push back a little when people say curl pattern doesn’t matter at all. IMO, the other factors definitely matter a lot more, but for those of us on the loosest end of the spectrum, any elongation can make our waves disappear. Just due to geometry - patterns with more “side-to-side” can afford to trade some stretch for other styling goals and still look like themselves. But then you covered that via style goals!
    Also, I really appreciate you acknowledging that some people want soft definition. Most tutorials I see seem to prioritize strong definition, which isn’t my best look. (Love it on others, but it looks harsh on me.) If you’re taking requests, I’d love to see a soft look tutorial. (Personally, my priorities are shrinkage, volume, and getting those qualities to last, which is tough without harder hold products. A tip I learned from Curly Chelle recently was to spritz on a working spray while diffusing to boost the hold. That has helped a lot.)
    And I LOVE that your new shop page has combining filters! I was playing around with that while listening to the video, and didn’t realize that they made an “and” filer instead of an “or filer”. That’s so helpful. As you expand that, I’d love to see some mousses and tags for curl-activating/shrinkage-inducing ingredients. (My hair seems to love magnesium sulfate - I think my holy grail would be a super lightweight version of AG Re:Coil.)

    It would be great if your shop search included filters on hair texture, porosity type, climate the way you talked about in this video.
    Some of the search filters I'm not sure what they mean as I'm fairly new to this. But I do know that I have medium texture, low porosity hair and live in an extremely humid environment and I don't like to end up with crunchy hair nor poofy frizzy hair.
    I narrowed my search by protein free, synthetic fragrance free (allergic), paraben free and medium hold which gave me one result which unfortunately contains PVP which I'm not a fan of.
    Does anyone have any recommendations for styling products? The more natural the ingredients the better.

    Is AG Liquid Effects going away or being reformulated? I can’t find it on the Ulta website and it’s clearanced on the AG site.

    Hi Gena. My hair is fine and medium porosity. I get confused with conditioning. I wash once a week. then I use kinky curly leave in.. should I use a regular conditioner if so what kind? and leave in too. or just a leave in? should I use gel only with leave in? I get so co fused thanks

    How to get curl pattern back after having a baby? I started hating my natural curly hair because it looks really bad right now and I don’t know how to fix it :(

    It would be so beneficial to me & other fragrance sensitive people to know how fragranced hair products are. I usually order online & try to scan the comments/reviews for info on the smell. If I see many comments about how good it smells or how much the scent is loved or hated, I know to pass. It's very frustrating since I have found stylers that worked great but the heavy fragrance triggered asthma, headache or just irritated my nose & eyes to the point of needing to rewash my hair immediately. I've avoided brands like Curl Smith due to the fragrance & didn't have any luck with their Shine products which are scent free. Same with Jessicurl stylers although I love their unscented shampoo/conditioner, the stylers didn't work for me. I am thrilled to have found fragrance free hairspray readily accessible (finally) The fragrance thing was always problematic when going to any salon. It gets tiresome explaining/arguing with stylists over hairspray & perfumed shampoo. Now I just bring my own shampoo/conditioner & know I will have to wash/restyle my hair the next day after the trim/color touch up.

      I can definitely see if I can add tags to products based on how strong a scent is. The only thing I'm concerned about is that my definition of strong or mild may not be the same as yours since I don't have any sensitivities. I did include tags for synthetic fragrance though for those looking to avoid phthalates.

      I featured drugstore products here as well but wanted to only make sure I suggest products that are good quality. I’ve searched high and low for more good quality gels that are cheap but haven’t found many. The one Dove gel I used to love was discontinued 😞
