    what a helpful video, was never taught in my university course but this helped as I had to rationalise choice of material for the product I created for my product design dissertation. What a legend!

    This is a fantastic video! I can't believe how badly this is taught at my University. Materials Science feels like such a subjective course from my viewpoint. It is the most confusing of the engineering courses for me. Thanks again!

    Thanks a lot, helped me understood in detail about material selection.🙏
    But, I have a question/doubt, with the Ashby plot with different guide lines like with stiffness indexes E/ρ, E(²/³)/ρ, E^(1/2)/ρ.

    do you select material before the geometric and force analysis ? i have always found it easier to calculate the maximum stress the part is subjected to and after that I would select material with factor of safety in mind?

    Hi Great Video. One thing I can't figure out are the first 3 Performance Index values of 70.3 for Wood when cost factored in. Same for 2 materials below wood. For the rest of the materials when you divide Performance Index values by Normalised cost they work out but not for the first 3...?

    Hi professor, I couldn't find a video about ceramic materials in the channel .I'm trying to find an answer for the question,which is _Why do ceramic materials need to be sintered?_ Could you help me ?

    • @BillyWu
      @BillyWu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question and I've also been meaning to make a ceramics video. Generally you might sinter a ceramic for a number of reasons to improve its properties. Generally, ceramic particles are shaped together with binders but have lots of pores and poor mechanical properties in their unsintered state. The sintering process therefore increases the density of the ceramic, removing porosity and thus improving its mechanical properties as the individual grains bond together.

    didn't know how you calculated material indices values

    • @BillyWu
      @BillyWu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a look at the equation of mass, we've separated out the terms into geometric/load parameters and material properties. In a material selection problem we only influence the material properties so we separate this out for our performance index. In this case, we flip the density/sqrt(Young's Modulus) relationship so that we are maximizing the performance index to reduce mass. This gives us P=E^0.5/rho
