  • This video presents the analytical method of selecting materials for mechanical design using the Asbhy's approach. It includes applications of stiffness-based and strength-based designs. The concepts and the method of selecting materials is applicable to all mechanical design whether a daily used product or highly demanding applications such as buildings, bridges, bicycles, automotive vehicles, railways, aircraft, spacecrafts etc. Ashby Map can be used for any similar mechanical design application.
    Summary:
    (1) Materials selection is an important step in the process of mechanical design and manufacturing. Stiffness and strength are two design requirements that should include lightweight consideration right at the early stage of design.
    (2) For both stiffness-based and strength-based designs, the performance index can be calculated and several materials can then be compared using Ashby Map for a particular design.
    (3) Lightweight mechanical design can bring benefits in terms of less material requirements, low manufacturing cost, energy savings at many stages and fuel efficiency for mobile applications such as automotive, railways and aircraft.

    The second value of C that's go up i choice it or there's calculation?
    Second question
    He gives some materials density and young mud to put in performance index law or he wouldn't? In exam

    • @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142

      Do you mean C in Equation 5.14? Yes, you can choose it based on your design requirements. Just the way you would select strength of a material based on design and application.
      Density and modulus has to be known to find performance index.

    is the equation 5.1 at minute 8:36 is work only for cantilever beams ? or for general use ?

      It is for cantilever only. For other configurations you can look up the equations in a textbook.

    Hello, I tried to find material index for bolt on aircraft wings but I could not find it can you help me please?

    • @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142
      @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For bolt you may not go for light weight because strength is very critical including creep. The weight of the bolt compared to the total structure may not be too high. However, you can do the analysis by treating bolt only in tension. This is geometrically very simple, you can compare with specific strength values between different suitable materials. Corrosion and creep properties are also very important during materials selection for bolt material.

      Toughness is another important one because fracture can happen by fatigue.

    ı try to find material index for bolts on plane wings.Can ı use strong and light material index?

    • @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142
      @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that we may not use this method for bolts because the weight saving is not much. This is because the weight % of bolt compared with the total structural weight of the plane wing is not much. Moreover, with bolts (nut and rivet) we need to have extra safety which can only be provided by the right kind of bolt material such as high strength steel. Corrosion prevention of the bolt, nut and the rivet is also very important.

    I'm still confused how to get the value of c to determine the y-axis

    • @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142
      @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      C is actually design specified parameter depending upon how good you was the performance. Higher C will give better performance of the materials but also at a higher cost. So, the designer has to optimized performance with cost.
