We’re starting off 2024, and it’s kinda like a house on fire, or a forest fire, but certainly not a calming campfire…
While on our way to Lost River Campground, we notice many forest fires bouncing through the National Forests in Virginia. As we made our way down I81 we kept seeing them everywhere. We had no idea what we were heading into.
When we reached our campground, there was talk of an evacuation. We quickly realized we were in no immediate danger, but we were troubled nonetheless. This episode will include a brief tour of the campground and its amenities. It’s actually a really nice and affordable campground, one we will definitely revisit in the future.
Our Itinerary was to include several hikes at Lost River State Park, however, over 1,000 acres of this park was claimed by the forest fires. Instead, we chose to head over to Smoke Hole Caverns. This is a rather touristy attraction, but quite fun nonetheless. The cave was used by Native Americans for smoking meats, thus the name, Smoke Hole. I was later used to make moonshine during prohibition.
The history of the cave is fascinating, yet the geology of the area trumps everything. Here, Pangea collided, and flipped the cave 90 degrees; this allows visitors to walk on the walls!
Next Week: North Fork Mountain Trail
Our journey continues every Thursday at 5:00!

Clutch catching the helicopter filling up with water to fight those fires. Always be prepared to pivot when your plans include the outdoors is something I learned a long time ago and this pivot was just as interesting. Love me some caverns!

Yeah; between kids, dogs, weather, and fires; you never know what can happen. That’s why I try not to tell future plans on the channel, don’t want to jinx things, or promise something that won’t be delivered.
Thanks for watching, see you soon!

Yes it was a really beautiful cave, full of interesting stuff. Definitely hard to get it on camera, stuff like this just has to be seen in person.
      Thanks for watching!

RVing seems like a lot of fun! The camp seemed very nice and I enjoyed watching as you went through the cave. I have never seen fish in a cave before that was neat! Thanks for sharing, and see you soon.
