Life is Waiting: Referendum and Resistance in Western Sahara | Documentary

  • What will it take for the people of Western Sahara to reverse decades of broken promises and gain their freedom? What lessons does Sahrawi resistance offer for nonviolent movements around the world? Join an incredible cast of Sahrawi activists and artists as they offer their answers. More than four decades after its people were promised freedom by departing Spanish rulers, the Western Sahara remains Africa’s last colony. While a UN-brokered ceasefire put an end to armed hostilities in the territory in 1991, the Sahrawi people have continued to live under the Moroccan armed forces' oppressive occupation. What peace exists in the area is fragile at best.Tens of thousands of Sahrawis have fled to neighboring Algeria, where over 125,000 refugees still live in camps that were intended to be temporary.
In spite of these difficulties, a new movement, with youth at its center, is rising to challenge human rights abuses and to demand the long-promised referendum on freedom. Today’s young generation is deploying creative nonviolent resistance for the cause of self-determination. In doing so, they are persevering against a torrent of conflicting forces. While risking torture and disappearance at the hands of Moroccan authorities, they are also pushing back against those who have lost patience with the international community and are ready to launch another guerrilla war.

In early 1975, both Morocco and Mauritania agreed to abide by the decision of the International Court of Justice on the status of the Spanish Sahara, but when the court ruled[5] in October 1975 that neither country was entitled to claim sovereignty over the territory, both governments chose to ignore the decision. In November 1975, they concluded the Madrid Agreements with Spain under which Morocco acquired the northern two-thirds of the territory, while Mauritania acquired the southern third. The agreement also included the proviso that Spain would retain shares in the Bu Craa mining enterprise. Mauritania acquiesced to the agreements under the assumption, probably correct, that Morocco, with its superior military power, would otherwise have absorbed the entire territory.[6][7]

For Morocco, it didn't mean the addition of the sahara, it meant the retrival of the sahara, the sahara was always Moroccan, these people in this video are a bunch of people who got raised by a mindset built from Algerian Polisario, which was created from hate towards Morocco to tackle the development of the region, Algeria had a rough defeat with Morocco during Sand war thus that made them fund and create a military front which is now have breed these people to think that the land is theirs, true sahraouis are in Morocco, these are thugs that uses some and children and teenagers to make the public feel sorry for them, Iran trained them,Algeria funds them,Libya ( when Gaddafi ) populated them, and now they gather refugees going from central Afrca to hopefully cross the Mediterranean to Europe ( people from Niger,Mali,Chad ... ) and threatening them either to be killed or to be a " Western Sahara " citizen, and these are all facts proven and validated by the United Nations, idk where does this video bring these information tho !! THE GREAT MOROCCO is not a plan, its the true land of the Kingdom of Morocco that once never let the Ottomans rule them,Nor the Romans, and ruled parts of Portugal and Spain, ain't no Morocco gonna take a land that's not theirs.

Yeah also why not give the original roman empire to the italians, the ottoman empire to turkish, all the arab peninsula to saudi etc? What you say is dumb, countries change throughout time, many loose land some others gain it. If your claim for the "great morocco" hold true then many other countries shall reclaim old territories as well, you are not the only ones, but this would bring forth global destruction and war. Settle with what you have already and try to develop it and have decent life for the citizens.

But with ur " smart ass " logic, China didn't choose to get Hong Kong back ? Azerbaijan ? Turkey ? Russia ? ... also, no one is demanding for Great Morocco as it was ( some parties do, which is great ) but what i am talking about is the Moroccan Western Sahara, and the Moroccan Eastern Sahara. Ger some education, these two Sahara's have Moroccan legitimacy over it, papers, rights, lands ... its not taking anyone's land, its just gathering what Madrid accord have left hanging. Lands in the Eastern Sahara which now within Algeria's borders are lands owned by Moroccans and their documents are documented in France and Morocco and the case never ended, usage of that land is gonna be exploited by both parties ( an accord ) if its not Moroccan, how can Algeria accept sharing its ressources? ( not happening rn, nothing is extracted from it ) ... idk about destruction if its about doing what i think its right for my people, and their rights, if you think otherwise get lost, thank you

    Algerians Military complex:
Throughout French colonization of Algeria and then Morocco, the Moroccan territory shrunk as the Algerian territory expanded. On 1956 Morocco achieved its independence and France offered to Morocco their territories back and mark new border and requested to stop supporting Algerian. Morocco refused France’ offer, continued to support the Algerian fight and had an agreement with Algeria government to resolve the disputed territories once they obtain their independence. Algeria betrayed Morocco, refused to return its territory and created Polisario.
On 1975, The Algerian regime expelled some 45,000 Moroccan families, about 300,000 people who have been residing legally in Algeria for decade, including many who fought the Algerian war of independence. They stole their homes, stole their businesses, separated families (kids, spouses, etc), and kidnapped people.
Algeria and Libyen leader Gaddafi have created and sponsored Polisario. This agression has been forced on Morocco since 1973. Algeria does not want to provide an appropriate climate for Morocco to resolve the matter in its favour. Algiers and Spain want the issue to remain unresolved to divert their population from their internal affairs and keep Morocco weak and occupied.
Moroccan Sahara (AKA Western) is an integral part of Moroccan territory and we will never allow anyone to change our historical and legitimate right.
You are ungrateful and uncultured regime who thrives on war and instability. our Moroccan grandfathers died fighting for you independence and this is what we have gotten in return. You have killed your own people in the free election of 1992. You have conspired with outsiders against your own people, you stole their wealth, and their life from them.
We should get our territory back from the French instead of trusting the like of you and we should not stopped during the war of 1963 to take what it is ours.
You have helped kidnapped Moroccans sahrawi from tan tan in 1981 and prevented from returning. This an international abduction and false imprisonment. You have brought other people from sahil countries and you hold them hostages as well.
You have no place in the free and civilised world,
Always remember, we are thé Moroccans, the Moors, and the Morabitines, we have rich and long history that goes far beyond as one of the greatest civilisation in human history. We are peaceful people, but we can turn to a war machine.
Karma is a bitch. Learn from what happened to Gaddafi.

I invite anyone reading this gentleman's comment to research the pieces of information presented while keeping an eye on the other side of the story because the latter is important in understanding of the serious accusations - presented as facts - and the Algerian point of view. Morocco voluntarily gave away its lands to the French (for political protection) who in their part annexed it to Algeria. The latter - unlike the former - fought for every inch a bloody war resulting in at least hundreds of thousands of casualties (and possibly millions) and horrifying war crimes to withstand its national identity as opposed the "war machine".

By recognizing Morocco's proprietary right to Western Sahara, President Trump has shown great leadership and remarkable insight into the region's political history. Historians as well as anthropologists know only too well that the ethnic minority from whom the Polisario separatist group descends, namely Banu Hassan, did not set foot in Western Sahara until 15th century, long after so many other Berber and Arab nomadic tribes had marked their presence in the region. This explains why the Polisario are both ethnically and linguistically different from native Berbers, and why they have more in common with the Yamanis of the Arabian Peninsula than any other North African native tribe.
The Polisario should be grateful to Morocco for offering them a home and allowing them equal access to the region's natural resources, and perhaps more grateful now than ever to be offered partial autonomy. Encouraging them to claim independence is synonymous to inveigling North African communities of France to fight for an independent state of their own in the heart of Europe, which no European of sound mind would ever tolerate.
From a legal perspective, the Polisario’s claim to Western Sahara, a land which formed part of Morocco prior to its occupation by Spain, is void ab initio under Public International Law, for it is based on fraudulent misrepresentation. President Trump knows that there has never existed a contract of allegiance between the Kings of Morocco and the Polisario. Any ties of such allegiance as referred to by the International Court of Justice were between successive Moroccan monarchs and the region’s tribal leaders of of whom the Polisario constituted no part. These facts on their own render the Polisario a rogue Front and any claim to Western Sahara void ab initio.
Equally importantly, Mr Tump, having access to sound legal advice, knows that since title to Western Sahara has already transferred back to Morocco under the treaty of Madrid, the Polisario has no case and no claim either. Had title not transferred back to Morocco, the Polisario might have been able to seek a judicial remedy to their self-inflicted misfortunes, notwithstanding the fact that international law lacks the ability to bind states.
Whatever any Algeria-paid, attention-seeking opportunists say or do will not change facts on the ground, nor give Algeria access to the Atlantic ocean on the back of the Polisario Front. All they can deliver is a mere dance to tunes dearest to Algeria’s heart, which they do well so long as they get paid. The sum of their performance, to put it another way, is nothing more than virtual obiter dicta.

    • @abdelkaderalikhoudja7540
      @abdelkaderalikhoudja7540 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

Interesting Morrocan viewpoint, concluded by an otherwise regrettable rant.
Moreover, to say "Encouraging them to claim independence is synonymous to inveigling North African communities of France to fight for an independent state of their own in the heart of Europe" is just a fascinating, poorly-crafted logical fallacy. Comparing two different times with two very different situations (I would remind you that there were no work visa/emigrant visa in the 15th century like there is today or agreements, like there is between the governments of Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and France today to facilitate emigration; therefore, your analogy is simply incorrect).
Most importatnly, to me at least, and to every people suffering (and who suffered) systemic brutality and ethnic alteration (cleansing) (like the case with Western Sahara and Palestine today), the Sahrawis fought the Spaniards when the Morrocans would not; they shed blood for the land they have inhabited for centuries and the land that Moroccan's apparently should inherit (not because they preserved it, fought or died for it, but because their "ancestors" from a thousand years ago set foot in it, FIRST). When Spain was pressured to leave, it decided to split the territory between Morocco and Mauritania (ironically, Morocco, because of the kindness of their hearts as some Moroccans argue, accepted to share the Sahrawi territory (65/35 percent, if I am not wrong) with Mauritania. The irony gets only worse, as Morocco was against something called Mauritania, in the first place, and claimed it as past "Morrocan" land, when the land that is called Morocco today was in itself part of the Moravid dynasty (Moravid, hence, Mauritanians and Sahrawis).
You should know that you citing Trump is really not in your favour; Trump is no historian, academian or at least politician, he is a businessman above all. His proposed deal (and map) for the Palestinian/israeli conflict is an enough example of his credibility in this matter. In the end, the Polisario pays the price for wanting a full and unconditional sovereignty over its lands, the lands it lived in for centuries, fought and died for without striking bargains or deals, unlike the Moroccan side with the Treaty of Madrid, and who normalized with israel to get (ironically enough) the latter, a murderous and settler colonial entity backed by the US and Trump's political right to recognize Morroco's - not sovereignty, necessarily - but plan for limited autonomy.
This is not to mention the fact that Spain still - to this day - controls the aerial space of the area in question, despite it being "Morrocan", according to Rabat. Morocco's need for the Sahara is mostly economic (as the area contributes heavily to Morocco's relative economic welfare); else, it would be maybe as forgotten as Ceuta, Melilla, as well as other islands (not qualifying as fully Moroccan yet for Rabat, it would seem). The Morrocan cry (in the later 1950s and early 1960s) for Western Sahara was only registered during the peak years of oil and gas discoveries in the African desert).
To sum up, to apply the Morrocan understanding on land sovereignty would simply mean that one needs a past (in its loosest of understandings) driven by an ideology of supremacy and superiority; if your ancestors arrived before the English to the New World, for instance, then, you have a claim to the land. Deciding on the logic whether to retrieve it or not, when and where, nonetheless, remains a decision not yet clear from the side of Rabat who seems more than content sharing its north with Spain and not fighting for it or at least demanding it, as long as the latter supports its limited autonomy proposal for Western Sahara.

The United States affirms, as stated by previous Administrations, its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory. Therefore, as of today, the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the entire Western Sahara territory and reaffirms its support for Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory. The United States believes that an independent Sahrawi State is not a realistic option for resolving the conflict and that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution.

The top of all that the kingdom of Morocco took back a small part of its historical lands and borders from the Spanish and French colonialism, Algeria is afraid from Morocco to ask about his territories stolen from France and integrated to French Algeria as they call it, this is why Algerian military regime is trying to keep Moroccan army under pressure, because they know that they will defeat them as always.

Free Algeria from Military control. Free kbayal.
Polisario is the creation of Algeria and Libya Gaddafi to keep Morocco small, weak and occupied. They promote war atmosphere and instability in the region to divert their population from their internal affairs and create a venue for their masters to continue stealing their wealth.
Same thing goes for Spain, they want to keep Morocco occupied to prevent them from claiming their occupied territories. They play with people lives for the sake of control and to keep the status quo unchanged.
Selfish and evil...It is sad but true.

This has always been Moroccan Land throughout history. This has never been an invasion or occupation, but this is a recovery of Moroccan territories from Spanich colonization. Eventually We will recover Sebta, Melilla, Canary islands and lost territories to Algeria during France colonization.

By this argument, I suppose all of North Africa should be transferred back to the Roman Empire? And I suppose you agree with the state of Israel? Historical events do not provide legitimacy for invading land. Those people clearly do not want to be ruled by Morocco. If you believe these lands are Historically Moroccan, then surely the people inside should be allowed a referendum to decide whether they agree with you? Or do you care more about dirt than human lives, my friend?

The region has historical, cultural and family connections throughout history of the region.
We should create unity instead of falling into trap of Algeria regime. We are simply uniting our lost land and it is done deal.
Algeria should also give independence to kbayal. The Spain should do the same for the basque....list goes on and on.

you are dreaming. it's ok for you living in spain a wonderful life and barking free western sahara. but those detained forcibly by the so called polisario are living in hell in tindouf camps. if they had the chance they would all go to join their brothers and sisters in morocco where they can live with dignity. so stop pestering morocco because you will never have the moroccan sahara . it will god willing remain moroccan until the end of time. every moroccan not only king hassan and the moroccan government. but every moroccan is firm on this subject. what you call western sahara is moroccan and it will remain so. there is no sahraoui people. the polisario are algeria's pupets .
