    $300? Where do you live? The cheapest I found around here is $550 + tax and I have to drive 1.5 hrs and leave the car. Local BMW dealer wants $800.

      Greenville South Carolina. There are a couple of young guys that opened a bmw performance shop in the area and have great prices for services.

    I would’ve use a brass bristle brush to the size it would’ve been way easier to clean out

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I couldn’t find one the size I wanted that I could get here fast enough. Way too impatient! Issue was more getting all of the stuff out that flaked off.

    Question. Before you cleaned the valves, did the rough idle go away after the car warmed up?

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Actually the car idled smooth until it got warm. That’s what led me to change the o2 sensors. Cleaning the valves really only made a difference for me in acceleration and throttle response

    How do you rotate the cylinder heads to get them open or closed

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I showed how to do that in the video. You just need a little jumper wire connected in the location that I show and tap it on the starter. That will rotate everything until the valves close on the port you are working on. With the coil packs off, it won't fire.

    • @michaelaguirre3668
      @michaelaguirre3668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to rotate the cylinder heads with the jumper wire kit but it only made the starter turn on but the valves didn’t move at all any suggestions.?

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelaguirre3668 That's weird. How long did you hold it? It takes a couple of seconds to move them. And if you valves are super dirty, its hard to see them move. If the starter is firing, the valves are moving.

      Important step with these cars but misfires are caused by so many things in the N54.

    Really good cheap solvent is gasoline. It will dissolve the carbon better than the cleaner. I use it with a mix of diesel to clean parts in a tub all the time. It's harsh, but it's cheap and it works very well.

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn’t even think about putting gas in the valves.

    I didn't remove or unplug spark plugs or coil packs. I just cranked the engine and turned it off before the car started to change valve positions. I also used valve cleaning brushes and picks to clean out the valves. seemed impossible to get out all of the carbon but managed to get most of it out. Does some carbon getting into the engine cause damage? or will the car burn it off?

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a good idea to remove the spark plugs during the process. You don’t want to be creating spark when turning the engine over. Some carbon getting into the cylinder almost seems inevitable. As long as it’s not huge amounts, it should be fine.

    This isn't the "BEST" cleaning I've seen, not even close. Just being honest. Mine looked brand new when I was done with it. I didn't make a video though, sorry. I saw a comment about a brass bristle brush. That will work, but be cautious about the bristles breaking off. You want to make sure you don't leave that in there if it happens. After doing a liquid clean and brush, I still used a vacuum with a air compressor to make sure there was nothing left in there.

    I've done that liquid cleaning once on my own too. Would recommend doing multiple cylinders at once. If I will ever do it again, I'll likely let that liquid to work overnight hoping it would eat it all in the meanwhile, or get hardware for walnut blasting. I got it done with scrubbing and stuff, but suggest people to consider twice due the high labour/time it takes to get all 6 cleaned

      Does it need to be completely dry before turning on the car? I’ve had the car sitting on week because I can’t get a tiny bit of CRC Cleaner could of there. I only did 2 because of how much time it took me to get the liquid out it being my first time lol

    Get a walnut blaster, is a good investment...or do an E85 conversion, it burns cleaner and no carbon build up...
