    Nice Jake. I've been curious what all this talk about walnut blasting was about, it didn't make sense to me at first. This was cool to see it in action. Doesn't look like a tough job, just time consuming.
    Looks like you have a pretty nice setup all around, time to get yourself a car lift.

      Thanks Eric! I'm glad I could shed some light on the process. Funny you mention the lift... I'm really looking into a MaxJax setup or a Atlas BP9000. MaxJax would fit as-is. BP9000 would require me to notch the ceiling a few inches to fit the posts. My garage ceilings are slightly lower than 9'.

    When I did my walnut blast of my intakes I used the small spatula style picks from Harbor Freight to scrap with. The build up was gummy and scarping first is quicker than just blasting until it is all clean. Also there are small ports on the top of the intake ports that go up to the valves or valve cover. I had walnut media in my valve cover that I had to blow and rinsed out. There are tubes in the top of the valve cover that appear to route to the PCV. No one ever says anything about them but they need to be covered some way.

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know about those little ports. I didn't think any walnut shell media would go up into there, but it's definitely possible. I also used a scraping tool to loosen up the carbon before blasting. Works great.

    I have an e50 tuned 2016 Ford F150 2.7 Ecoboost (15-17 dont have the additional port injectors like 2018 up) that I bought new in 2016 and now has 193,xxx miles. I ran an endoscope down and looked at my valves, they looked pretty bad. Going to do the walnut method, not looking forward to it as it will be far more difficult because you can't get to them standing on the ground and the ports are way down in the center of the engine. But with the mods I have it's obvious that the 9 second 40-100 is not quite what it should be and the carbon covered intake valves plus the likely clogged 193,xxx mile cats are likely choking it down. I will also be installing my new CVF CATTED DOWNPIPE. Looking forward to the results. Thanks for the video, well done.

      @@skylinerthirtytwo2683 it did help. The car runs way smoother now. This did fix part of the fuel economy issue I was having, but I also had two leaking injectors. Once I replaced my injectors and cleaned the intake valves it gets the gas mileage it’s supposed to! Definitely would recommend doing this cleaning especially if it’s never been done like mine.

    This video confirms that the catch can on this car did not prevent build up...am I wrong in assuming aftermarket catch cans are installed to keep the intake valves clean?

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not pointless, because it does catch oil. But it is not a 100% prevention method. The BMS catch can that is installed in the car is for the high side (boost) PCV system. It will catch vapors when you are in boost, but does not function when just driving normally around town. You can install another catch can on the low side to capture vapors during both vacuum and boost. This would be much better at keeping the valves clean. BMS offers the second catch can setup, that way you can run dual catch cans. I plan to do this in the future.

    • @TheFrenchPug
      @TheFrenchPug 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one installed and it fills up way more than that every 10k miles. I installed mine after my first intake blast at 60k. At 130k miles now and idle is still perfect. But, I do want to investigate.

    • @bulkhogan5
      @bulkhogan5 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jake_spence This is correct. If you look inside of ports 3 and 4, there are two runners that also vent crank gas back into the intake ports. For the future, that black electrical box under the throttle body is easy to get out with a few 90 degree picks, contrary to popular opinion.

    • @lynxstarautomotive208
      @lynxstarautomotive208 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They are designed to catch your hard earned money. They are useless, and only clutter up your engine bay, and introduce new potential failure points. Turbo engines will always have oil in the intake tracts. It is the nature of the design.
      I’ve been working on these cars for over 15 years. Never seen a catch can do anything useful. Folks just feel good when they open up that little can and see it full of oil. It’s a placebo effect. Just unplug a charge pipe, and drain that! Same effect, because I assure you, that oil is still making it inside the engine.
      But hey it’s not my money, so to each their own.

    • @ogfromutube9649
      @ogfromutube9649 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily true. My charge pipes,intercooler, and intake manifold/valves are squeaky clean with mishimoto baffled can amd snow performance wmi. But i have port injection. Utilized stock pcv box with larger 1/2 tubing to catch can then routed back to fresh air pipe. Fresh air pipe has a ptc heated element to keep any leftovers vapors liquified.

      Welcome aboard! The more pressure your compressor has, the more powerful the blaster kit will be. I'm sure you'll be able to do it with your current compressor, but might just take a little more effort. I hope that makes sense.

    great informative video. now that all's clean have you considered dribbling in 100 to 200 ml of water via a syringe every 6 months or so to keep the intake/ports/valves clean?

  • @dschNgz
    @dschNgz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Use some good full synthetic oil and fuel it up with premium Gas only,this will also prevent the Carbon build up. I heard that the N55 doesnt have that much problems with intake valves ?

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since it's direct injection, it will always suffer from build up. There is no gas passing through the intake valves to help clean them. But good oil and gas will always be better than crappy stuff! Yes, the N55 has a better PCV system than the N54 so there is less buildup.

    With everything so torn apart I do not want to start the engine with this remote starter button. Instead I just crank it over till the valves are closed. In older cars it was easy by just disconnecting the spark plug at the distributor. How do you disable "spark" with these new coil packs? Alternatively, on older cars you could turn the engine with a wrench but that is not easy to get to by the looks of it. I am open to suggestions.

    I’m having trouble with installing the wand and brass adapter I just ordered from your link to bimmerhelp, I have the harbor freight #37025 portable blaster kit same one as you, is the brass fitting ($6) supposed to be hammered into the gun?? Also the threads on the adapter to the wand don’t seem to be the same pitch, and the silver colored wand appears crooked into the brass fitting also.

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be a tight fit that is held in with that set screw. See this link for more information on how it goes together: www.bimmerhelp.info/Bimmerhelp_Brass_Fitting.php

    At 4:00 You said it seems to be performing okay, then you took a test drive after you cleaned everything and said it's running better. I'm wondering if the valve cleaning truly did the trick, or if it was one of the many new gaskets you replaced. I retorqed the intake on a previous vehicle, with 100k miles, due to a minor intake leak and that fixed the issue. There are a lot of variables to consider in determining how much this oil/carbon build up truly hinders performance.

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was wondering about that too. It might be in my records I got with the car, but I doubt it. Either way, this catch can only catches vapors in boost. Doing regular driving, it's ineffective. You need two catch cans to prevent buildup, one on the high side and one on the low side.
