Just wanted to say thank you! I’ve been working on the standstill for 4 days now. When I started last week, my max was 280 (with a walkup I generally get 280-330 max). Today, day 4, I had 2 over 330 on the field and one off the tee on flat ground at 355! New personally best! I’ve also been trying to get my nose angle down lately too but today I gave up on that and just tried to focus on pulling faster and wow, that def made a huge difference. Again, thank you so much for your help. Set a new personal best for backhand and did it with a standstill! PS, I did have a tailwind on those throws but whatevs, 355 woo!
Great video! I think something that clicked with some issues I've been having that I can't figure out is the shoulder slight protraction! thanks a ton! Helps you need less shoulder IR!
As a standstill thrower, you've made me realize how much more effort I'm putting into my throws than is likely needed. I tried emulating your form in my home office area and it feels less strenuous so I imagine my back will appreciate it over time (approaching 40). I hope your future videos show a few more angles as well, ty!
It’s funny to hear things that have been said in countless older videos (like Dave Feldberg) but with an explanation behind body components and functionality. The fact that you emphasized protraction and not arching the back etc… Simple video but profound on pointing out important aspects. Great job 👏
You just said SO many things that I’ve gathered from watching form videos and throwing how it works for me. This is a GREAT tutorial that I wish I’d had over this last year of learning and refining.
I’ve watched countless videos on form as I started disc golf late in life (at 37 during Covid) and this is for sure one of the top videos. A lot of instructors overcomplicate form with things that do not help as you know. shoulders forward and elbow up are extremely helpful and messed up. Please keep up the lessons!
This video changed the arc of my disc golf life, I kid you not. So simple, so repeatable. I never surpassed 55 mph until now. I'm close to 60 and improving rapidly. I had too much muck in my brain. Awesome video.
I'll be posting a followup at some point on how to - get a consistent release point, work on launch, and work on nose. Tried to keep it super simple and just focused on speed in this one!
I tried this today and it works quite well. I did not get any more distance (around 200-230 ft), but the throw felt easier and smoother. I still get late releases about 30% of the time. It's a timing issue but not sure if it's arm or shoulder issue. Friend tried it too and he could throw pain free for the first time! Really good video!
Great video! I broke my form down to a 1 step tee shot for a year and gleaned similar lessons the hard way. The more nuanced takeaways are very helpful to build on, especially keeping the counterweight leg in line with the spine, head position, and avoiding too much flexion in the upper back. It'd be great to see some field work videos with full flight. It's hard to believe but 400+ ft throws are definitely attainable with standstill throws
I know you're saying that you're not using any crazy lag/hip strategies, but watching you slow-mo, you definitely have it. I've noticed a huge difference in new players who have done other sports and in those where disc golf may be their first sport. Having played a different throwing sport gives you a pretty big headstart, even if you don't really see it. Point being, it may feel like 'not trying' to viewers who have a sports background but for those of us new to sport, we still very much need to 'try' and get that muscle memory!
Thanks. My partner and I are beginners and in our 60’s. We have struggled with getting the backhand correct. There are so many different opinions…thanks for keeping is simple. We are going out today to try it out!
When I went out and tried this this morning I realized I didn’t know how to shift my weight to get the motion started. But when I watched again I see you rock to your back leg as you reach back before shifting to brace and pull through. I didn’t seem to catch that when watched it the first time. That was critical for me. First time out throwing standstill am throwing 90% (sometimes 100%) of my normal throws but with more accuracy. More distance to come… I think. 💪🏼👊🏼
Great info and drill. I am in my fourties and have been trying to improve form and distance for the last few years. I have been averaging 300 with X step and occasionally hitting 350. Working on this drill during break at work I hit 300 twice with standstill and threw 5 discs to 370 with X step. Goal was to hit 400 by the end of last year, didn't make it with my longest being 365, but 400 feels obtainable by summer. Thanks!
@@OneFocusPhotos I've got my average up closer to like 54. Definitely noticing gains in rounds. My biggest gain was from fixing an issue with my brace and having a bigger reach back. My front foot was open instead of closed in a more athletic stance
This is super helpfulll. I can really use your help with my stand still. I can only get between 160 to 200 feet. I have been recording myself and for some reason I cant get my hips to turn with my shoulders on my reach back. I noticed on yours you are able to get that nice straight line from your right foot to your shoulder. When I do my reach back my butt points back instead of letting my hips rotate with my body.
I will give it a try. I've been playing a few months and I'm stuck at 150-200' standstill. I do field practice every week, sometimes twice and I'm not getting the improvement I feel I should be getting.
I watched this a few days ago. I practiced a little then played for the first time in over 2 months. I threw farther with a standstill than I ever have and was completely rusty.
This is great! I’ve been playing about 6 months and am struggling to get to 300. My release seems to be very hit or miss and causes a ton of frustration sometimes. Gonna really focus on what you got going on here. Thanks for the great content 🤙
For sure! I'm in the field now. Definitely everything is on spike hyzer. Having trouble getting disc flat but first time trying. I have a problem falling over my brace and my weight hits my knee and I've developed some pain. Standstill don't tend to hurt the knee so this where I think I should be. Thanks a lot. Hopefully I can gain some speed.
Got led to this video from a DGCR thread kinda roasting you lol. Anyways this is actually pretty good stuff, I just subscribed. I'm coming back to throwing after running a barbell program since last fall, so I'm finding value in these videos so far.
Excellent video. But i wish it started with a demonstration of the throw to give it more context. But i finally caught myself up haha. Can't wait to try this in a field.
In some of your play throughs when throwing a big 450 hyzer, your back foot seems more offset than in this video. In inches, how offset are your feet when throwing a hyzer? thanks
Swing path is my biggest problem. I tend to flex my muscles which cause me to have the elbow below the disc. Hard to fix currently with my bad muscle memory
I don't like thinking about hip shoulder separation. It does happen, but only because the torso needs something to pull from. Your body just naturally does it as you need to pull harder.
I’m curious how much your fitness is playing a role. You’re definitely in the higher echelon of fitness than the majority of us. Good info. Getting a net here this week.
It’s definitely playing some role, but I have coached quite a few people into the 60s now and it’s not all about muscle. Anyone can throw 400 feet imo.

Great content clint. I'm a month into trying to learn this game. I'm curious about something - the tech disc throws you show in this video show a distance range of like 166 to 430 even though other metrics don't seem that different. Is this real?
Interesting. Did you translate this movement or theory from any other sport? Reminds me moreso of a one handed backhand in tennis compared to other ways I've seen it explained. In any case, going to give it a try in the field because my standstills sure need some work.
Good content! Swing plane stuff is so hard to get right. If you want to improve from 450 to 500 and beyond would you think it’s more form and swing plane stuff or should you put effort more to throwing arm or faster run up or something else?
I think it's individual what's holding you back. Find someone who knows the mechanics and be direct. Say what is the single thing I can do to stop limiting my power. Fix it. Repeat. Don't let them give you a 7 hour lecture about mechanics because you'll spin your wheels.
Thanks, Im fast implementing new things in my form and consuming almost every single coaching video/forum posts there is. Good to see this more simple aproach that is now driving some of the coaching community.
OK, this was kind of eye opening for me. I think I've been putting too much thought into the mechanics of the x step. Looking at my own videos of practicing, I feel everything looks good timing wise but the snap just isn't there. My pointer and middle finger tips are a little swollen after practicing this standstill drill for about 10 minutes, I think that is telling me something! Going to have to get to a field
What do you think your hand is doing when it releases the disc? I've heard to grip it tight, as if you're intentionally trying to NOT release the disc, but the momentum will forcefully eject the disc out of your hand no matter what. I'm always afraid that I'll griplock the disc and my hand ends up releasing it. I feel like I'm losing spin when I don't hold onto it tighter.
Don’t intentionally release. Your body will do its own thing to increase your grip as necessary as long as you just think hold on. No need to squeeze intentionally either.
@@BlitzDG thanks for the quick reply. I'll keep it in mind. As someone with a problematic back I wonder if going standstill will help ease my back issues. I'll definitely be testing things out in the field. Thanks for the video.
You need to set up so your in a position where full weight on your front foot feels nice and balanced. Then you slightly rock to the back foot to remove it and plant all the weight quickly. In part 3 of this tutorial we will go over the legs and what they are doing and how you can use that to gain rotational speed once your arm speed can match it!
Shoutout WA State! Might see you on the course sooner than later. Question: what are the resources you used to develop your throwing style? Coaches/tutors/forums/etc, directly or indirectly.
Honestly I’ve watched everything from everyone. I’m kind of an intense person when it comes to things. I’ve consumed hundreds of hours of coaching videos and kept what helped and discarded what didn’t. I’ve had one on one chats with Treb, Slingshot, Josh, and I’ve at least tried ALL of their stuff. What I’m trying to teach is just the best things I’ve learned from everyone out there boiled down and communicated effectively. They all have good points. Also gotta mention DGspindoctor. His simplicity is great. Just whether you hear it better from me or from them. If you catch me, stop me. I’d love to chat!
Thx you, at 67 and just starting .. this explanation was one of the best I've seen ... I can wait to get out and try adjusting my stand still throw ...
I notice your nose angle is always negative, whats your opinion, dose it have to be negative in order to throw further. Any tips how to get it to be negative. For me the pouring the tee does not help at all :D.
Okay here we go. This is something I struggle with. Weight. I’m 6ft 320lbs. Got into disc golf to be healthier and be outside and it has help maintain the weight I’m at after having my son. I never spend any time in the gym and want to start. Losing weight and gaining strength must help with distance right. Besides all the other natural benefits of being healthier. Just realized I’m rambling and nothing on the topic of standstill, lol
Ok, just making sure. My understanding was the stretch and retraction of the shoulder/lats plays a big role in increasing arm speed. I've recently been messing with it and when I get it right with a loose arm, it feels exactly like some of my longest standstill drives @@BlitzDG
The amount of likes on the video was 666, but I had to press like, increasing it to 667 - wrecking a perfect number. i'm sorry. Hopefully it makes it easier for others to like the video in the future.
I aim at the target and the disc rips out where it hits max forces. If your timing is correct it should be on the line your feet set, dependent on where your personal release point is.
@@peterd.brauch9848 Putting weight onto your front leg SHOULD make your front leg want to go up and back. This will be explained in much better detail in my upcoming part 3 video talking about the lower body.
@@BlitzDGI was talking about the other hip. But I am very curious about where your power is coming from when you say you aren’t using muscles, what is driving your throw? Can I send you a clip of my standstill? Thank you
@@peterd.brauch9848 Obviously any power is coming from muscles when we are starting statically, and what I mean is I'm not TRYING to throw the disc very hard. The power is coming from the timing of converting the power of my weight shift stacked on top of torso and upper body. It's not about trying really hard. It's about syncing things up and getting the arm where it can absorb the most power efficiently.
I really like what your content but it’s unfortunately way too long. You drown out all the goods in too many words. You could have provided the same message in half or third the time which would have made it so much more effective and lot more people would finish it. The first throw happens at 16:30 and the vasty majority of instruction is before that. If you don't have 16 minutes to spend on learning form I don't know what to tell you.

The spin rate…any recommendations on how to increase spin?
how you throw so far in 10motnhs? i played for 4years and cant reach 300ft my max around 250
Eye-opening!!!!
You sound just like Tim Heidecker
I notice your nose angle is always negative, whats your opinion, dose it have to be negative in order to throw further. Any tips how to get it to be negative. For me the pouring the tee does not help at all :D.
This feels like a modern Beto drill
Okay here we go. This is something I struggle with. Weight. I’m 6ft 320lbs. Got into disc golf to be healthier and be outside and it has help maintain the weight I’m at after having my son. I never spend any time in the gym and want to start. Losing weight and gaining strength must help with distance right. Besides all the other natural benefits of being healthier. Just realized I’m rambling and nothing on the topic of standstill, lol
Do you feel a lot of tension in your arm/shoulder when you hit max reachback/brace?
There is certainly tension and a kind of bounceback off the stretch you can harness, but nothing crazy.
Ok, just making sure. My understanding was the stretch and retraction of the shoulder/lats plays a big role in increasing arm speed. I've recently been messing with it and when I get it right with a loose arm, it feels exactly like some of my longest standstill drives @@BlitzDG
So I have tried this for three days. Can’t get faster than 50. Most throws are 45. Not sure what to do next
Join the discord and ask for help :) I have some other videos that might help if you're doing some major things wrong!
Hey bro! Great stuff, where are you based out of?
I live in Washington state!
@@BlitzDG oh dang I’m all the way down in Texas! I’ll have to stay up to date with your content man, some great tips!!
@@Adriantaylordiscgolf I do plan on visiting there this year to play!
So how do you get more spin
I recommend aiming for a deeper pocket, more wrist coil, and a more relaxed grip.
I tried this today and on video I can see a better axis of rotation, but after only 9 throws my knee and elbow hurt now. 😢
Takes time to build it up man. Consistency and rest are key.
Nice, I will try this. Can I join your discord?
Wow moment
The amount of likes on the video was 666, but I had to press like, increasing it to 667 - wrecking a perfect number. i'm sorry. Hopefully it makes it easier for others to like the video in the future.
How dare you.
Also, we talking Heroes of Newerth? GOATed game.
@@BlitzDG we sure are! Thank you for a great video btw!
Do you aim at 11 O’clock?
I aim at the target and the disc rips out where it hits max forces. If your timing is correct it should be on the line your feet set, dependent on where your personal release point is.
I must be the only person on the planet that can’t do this. I’ve been throwing at a net all day with tech disc and can’t break 45mph.
In start position our your hips pretty flat?
You'll have to clarify. Flat in regards to what?
@@BlitzDGlevel with each other. When I put weight on my front leg, my left hip wants to go up and back. This is probably a balance issue
Wtf? Boom!
discgolf does NOT move on a line
its IN and then OUT!
I really like what your content but it’s unfortunately way too long. You drown out all the goods in too many words. You could have provided the same message in half or third the time which would have made it so much more effective and lot more people would finish it.
It’s not how much you can say about a thing that makes you a good teacher, it’s how simply you can explain it.
The first throw happens at 16:30 and the vasty majority of instruction is before that. If you don't have 16 minutes to spend on learning form I don't know what to tell you.
I know what to tell ya…. Buzz off somewhere else you petulant inpatient noodle arm. Get your info from those reel ‘shorts’ somewhere else…..That definitely seems to match your game….. #short.
Thank YOU for passing your wisdom our way. I appreciate you and wish you much sponsored success in 2024. Who are your sponsors by the way and what else can we do to support your playing/coaching efforts ?
are you on dgcoursereview?? I am shocked that I've never seen your videos dicussed in the technique & strategy subforum
There have been some threads on my stuff over there. I pop in every once in a while but don't have much time for the bickering and some of the characters over there.
