Owned my first Tacoma pickup for 25 years. 350,000 miles. I’m a fanatic about preventative maintenance. Changed oil every 3000 miles no exemptions. Replaced breaks at 125,000. Dealer said I could make a commercial. Replaced muffler system at about 300,000. Blew a head gasket at about 300,000. Got that taken care of. Replaced catalytic converter once. Had problems with the starter motor toward the end and had to have that fixed more than I would have liked but that truck was the best investment I ever made. Replaced it with a 3rd Gen TRD Sport. Love it and so does everybody else.

You sir definitely use your truck to the max. Toyota is so reliable if you maintain them the right way, they last so long. Good to hear from a real life experience of someone going more than 300k

2019 TRD Off Road owner here with 25k miles. Upgrades:
    1) 3” King Racing lift kit with 33” tires and American Racing wheels
    2) LEDs in every hole plus ditch light pods on the A-pillars
    3) SPOD switch pro module
    4) Shift Commander - helps minimize 5/6 gear hunting on freeways with hills
    5) Tool box with backup battery heavy duty cables to an underhood tender (charger)
    6) Clazzio seat covers
    7) Front speaker and dash tweeter upgrades and boom mat in both front doors
    8) Center console divider

Another excellent video. Thanx for taking us along.....
As a retired Euro Car Tech (28 years) here's a couple of observations.
    1. Batteries are a consumable part. They have a finite life span and modern electronics are hard on them. 2 or 3 years is a very common life span. I change mine out every 3 years regardless of condition. It's cheaper than a tow bill.
    2. Your TPMS sensors were modified? Doesn't count as a failure.
I have 20K on my 2019TRDOR. Hope its has as few problems as yours's.....

    • @Michael_Tran
      @Michael_Tran  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

My co worker runs errands for work and just turned 180,000 miles on his. He doesn't haul as much as me and his is only a 2wd sport so it has a pretty easy life compared to mine. I have a Tacoma TRD Offroad pre runner SR5 with nearly 200K miles with no issues. But i don't modify anything from factory besides larger tires on factory rims. I do know people who do modifications and live to regret it. Another thing is I don't have a backup camera but know those who do. And when they lift the truck beyond factory specs, they seem to have a problem with backup camera. Toyota has done a good job building the Tacoma but it's not to be messed with in my opinion. My truck doesn't give me a lick of problem, but I don't modify it from factory specs.

Great video! What has broke on the Tacoma? Wear and tear parts 🤣! Oem batteries are terrible in most vehicles. I moved my old Optima yellow top from my Subaru into the Honda and it’s still going strong. There was
One video where I spent a whole night trying to kill it by leaving the car on, didn’t happen. A portable jump starter is a good thing to have, I carry two and keep them stowed away from electronically open doors like my tail gate. Car dies and I can’t get back there

    @TomWalterTX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Good information. The battery is 24F (super common) good for four years. I have a TOPDON ($50) battery tester and start checking after they are two years old. I just got a 2021 DCLB (Double Cab Long Bed) Off-Road. I like having the 6' bed, comes in handy. The 2021 "car play" is still the sucky etune. No Google maps, nor Waze, Scout GPS is the only option (it sucks). 2022 will be a new design, hopefully with true Android Car Play. For me Off-Road as I wanted the locker (95% of my off-road is easily done in 2WD, 4.9% in 4WD; so 0.1% I can use a locker.) I'll add rock sliders, mainly as insurance to prevent a crushed rocker and a door not functioning The biggest downside is our 950-pound payload gets reduced.
My FJ60 was deadstock, still running at 400,000 miles (maintenance, don't overlook brake fluid and power steering every five years. The fuel tank was replaced under Toyota Warranty but clutch (250,000 miles), water pump, and alternator/starter brushes, and wear items.
The only other tip, there are a ton of knock-off "OEM" parts being sold on Amazon and eBay. As much I hate the dealership, I do buy items from them to ensure they are OEM and not "made in china, but marked "all original Japan". Huge problem. Too old to make videos anymore, so keep up the good work and keep 'em coming.

Just back in @ 146,000 for oil change and water pump leaking again. Replaced with another NAPA pump. I use the truck to tow my camper out of town which accounts for most of the miles. Just picked up a 2021 TRD Pro Tacoma, and I love this thing! I can only hope to have a trouble-free experience for the lifetime of ownership. I mean its a Toyota after all, right? 🤣

I too picked up a 2021 Pro. 1100 miles to date. I bet you I get this to 500k miles in 25 years. I’m real anal about changing all of my fluids before OEM recommendations. Just changed the engine oil at 1k. At 5k I’m going to change the oil and filter again, to flush out anything during the break in period, along with my differentials, transfer case AND transmission oils. I know I’m CRAZY!

More Love than hate. TPMS unit is battery operated & wears out. Good to know truck will still operate without working TPMS. If you change a TPMS unit, it has to be programmed to the truck computer.(A Pain). When I 1st got my 18 MT Taco, I went to Amazon & ordered a Jeep grab handle. Remove the plastic cover on the dr-side pillar, there are 2 metal mounts for a gr-handle. Recently you can order a factory dr-side gr-handle kit for your Taco.

Yea, that's another reason I didn't want to deal with the TPMS, they said it has to be done at the dealership. I've seen a few mods for the grab handle, ill look into too. Thanks for the reference.

Get the TRD off road 4x4 because of the rear locker. That’s the only thing I regret but I’m thinking of adding the rear locker to my sport 4x4. You can swap out the hood for a sport one later lol. And crazy my battery also died at around 50k, kind of got me by surprise lol but other than that everything else has been great 👍🏻 nice video FYI I’m sure your aware but u actually hit 100k miles before the odometer showed it because of the bigger tires 🤭😂

The locker looks more and more useful nowadays haha. Yea, the battery seems like an issue for a lot of Taco owner. I didn't know the bigger tires made that much of a difference on the mileage. Wow, maybe iam at 125k?

No not that much. It’s like for every 10k you actually went 10,700 lol

My manual 3rd gen V6 is a hurky jerky clanky gas pig of a truck that handles corners like a brick on wheels. But I like it

Yea, most felt it was under power compare to the 2nd gen.

2018 TRD OR Double cab midnight black on black 77,000
Still has original battery, no issues at all aside from being a gas hog for a V6 🤣
Engine oil (every 5k), diffs+Tcase oil (every 30k), trans flush (60k), spark plugs (70k they looked perfectly fine tbh), pads, rotors, tires, one fog lamp (changed everything to LEDs afterwards) and wiper fluid.
That's it. That's all I've ever needed to do. The wiper blades, rear shoes, brake fluid, coolant and power steering fluid are all that's still from the factory.
    Nuts

That's pretty awesome! I do my oil every 5k as well...it helps for sure.

My 2021 battery went on my truck the 1st year. The dealer replaced the battery with another Toyota battery (free of charge) that has a 7 or 8 year warranty! I didn't know that existed. I will use that warranty if need be lol.
