You're not wrong but that show was amazing anyway, apples and oranges to me, nice to have a faithful screen adaptation but it's worse when they try to do it the same and fail
Best Batman omnibus on the market for me. The 'realistic' take feels in line with Batman Year One
Gotham Central is without a doubt in my top 5 favorite DC stories, and my top 3 Batman stories. I think its funny that this in my top 3 Batman favs even though its not even really about Batman.
It's great because it takes the spotlight off batman and makes him a background character. gives him a new and mysterious perspective and the stories surrounding the police makes it feel more grounded. Its feels like such a fresh take on the story of batman and Gotham city.
I got this omni a while back because of a recommendation from Near Mint Condition. I wanted to read it in preparation for this review, but life got in the way. What interests me the most about this book is how it is written. Rucka writes one shift, Brubaker the other, and it comes together in what I am told is an excellent crime / street level story. I with Marvel and DC would do this kind of thing more often.

I loved batman's role in this. Very mysterious and intimidating.
Love this book. Love the dynamic between the Dayshift and the Nightshift and all the development of these street-level characters and seeing Bat-related things from their perspective. Would make for an incredible TV mini-series.
Great choice for a review. This is one of my favorite books in my entire collection for sure.
Such a fresh take on the Batman universe. And I love how Rucka wrote all the day shift stories and Brubaker the night shift. Gave both squads of the GCPD a slightly different feel.

Knew you would really enjoy this. I read it a few years ago in the four trades, flew through them. I was wondering how good a GCPD book could be without named people, but it really won me over. And to this day I have not read a story with a ending that got me so heated in the best kind of way. Made me jump to 52 asap to follow Montoya's story

This was one of my favorite reads ever! Only part I didn’t like was the tie-in where all of Gotham got all mystical/magical...didn’t fit in at all. Keep up the good work Gem!

One of favorite Bat Books! Must read IMO
Always love your reviews. I tried getting into this by reading volume 1 of the trade paperbacks. Not my cup of tea but I'm glad other people get something out of it. That's why they have 31 flavors at the ice cream store.
I'm thinking GCPD might make a good movie or TV series, though.

@@GemMintCollectibles agreed, the whole bruce as a kid thing really turned me off the show. Also the show is a bit campy which I hate.
Sweet hearing a rave review about Gotham Central. Entertaining video. I just picked up this book last month since I got it cheap through an online discount sale. Not quite on the whale list yet but getting there. It was one of the last ones on my list but it's looking like it might be one I enjoy the most.

Great review. I love this book. It was one of the first omnibuses I ever got and it kick-started my interest in omnibuses in general. If you want another book with a similar style, I just got done reading the Powers Omnibus by Brian Michael Bendis and would definitely recommend it. It has that same type of crime/noir aesthetic but it is much more colorful and over-the-top - in a good way though. It has some fun stories, great characters, some great humor, and Bendis does a wonderful job of exploring this world where people with superpowers are the celebrities. It is a lot of fun.
Powers is awesome!
@Thomas Garrison the art in Powers is by Oeming, I think...
The early Bendis' noir stuff is Jinx, Torso and Goldfish. Not read any of them myself though!
I’ve never heard of this, Ed Brubaker definitely knows how to write a story though.

Appreciate the spoiler warnings. I'd say it's worth saying whether you recommend it or not early on too, so someone who doesn't want spoilers can know if it's worth picking up, in your opinion. Even something as simple as "Really enjoyed this book. Some issues with binding but it's worth the read. If you don't want any spoilers you might want to dip out now", before going in depth.

Solid read bro......I was hold up from knee surgery over the Christmas Holidays and knocked this out in a few days because I enjoyed it so much. I would say it was more akin to Homicide: Life on The Street than any Law and Order series, but whatever......excellent book.

I have this complete run. My brother gave it to me when it came out. I really liked how grounded the stories were. This title needs to exist now as an ongoing.

This kinda reminds me of the t.v. Show Gotham in a way. Because they really don’t have a Batman yet because Bruce Wayne is still a kid so basically you are with the GCPD throughout the t.v show. But honestly I loved the tv show so might have to look into reading this bad boy👍 awesome review 🤙

The Law and Order comparison is good, but it's actually much more in line with Homicide: Life on the Streets . . . if you haven't ever seen that show and you liked this book, definitely search it out and watch it. That show had a huge influence on the writing of this book, especially the Brubaker parts.

My LCS has TPBs of this. Gotham Central also inspired Gotham TV series before the tie-in comic. May look into the TPBs n Omni. Rucka really made the GCPD stand out. Reminds me of LOTDK: Prey, when Bats first met Dr. Hugo Strange who frames him. GCPD, Bullock chase Bats while Gordon helps him clear his name.

If you google just "52 omnibus" you'll see the one.
