I cried watching this... I had so many memories in this train, in fact it was the first sydney train I ever boarded. This is an icon and will always be remembered. R.I.P S sets
This S-set trains were my favourite train in Sydney. I went on these since I was a child. Now they are gone 😭 now I’m 43 years old and I still miss them
@@funnygrin3848 yeah there is a 4 car s set at flemington yard. Theres also a 2 car cityrail one that has stayed there and hasn't been refurbished since 2005, letting us see the Cityrail livery as well as 2 cars of the train. So in total there are 6 cars saved equivalent to making an R set.
Here's a bit of history, the trailer car adjacent to machine breaking up the car, was involved in the Cronulla hit up when one empty 8 car set was being shunted into the siding where there was another 8car set stored, the impact was so hard one car telescoped into the one in the video, I thought it would be written off due to the damage, but it was rebuilt at Gonnian Newcastle, if you look at the roof section you can see where the join is between the two different STAINLESS STEEL sections, about one third of the car was rebuilt, sorry cannot remember the car number, but it was a problem at Mortdale MC after its rebuild, it suffered water leaks due to the mismatch between the old and new roof sections, the sealant used in the repair failed.
14 carriages, 3x 4 car operational sets, for emergencies and heritage preservation. 2 cars for static display (C3805, first silver set car, is one of them) the rest all got scrapped, due to asbestos issues.
There's T4949, the unique Comeng-built carriage with the Goninan fluting next to the Goninan carriage that's getting destroyed there. Unfortunately T4949 is scrapped despite being a uniquely built carriage due to the Como train derailment I think.
@@HarishDharmapalan oh. I remember there was a carriage that was rebuilt due to the Como Bridge derailment which has the unique reversible seating and some different looking exterior detailing. What car was that and has it been preserved or scrapped?
@@jdouble-l19978 T4949 was found to not be overly historically important to be put into preservation. Yes it's unique due to accident damage, but it wasn't the only one.
@@LettuceTrains Also, given limited storage space to keep the heritage fleet, we just can not afford to 'preserve' absolutely every car that is for some reason 'different'. This also risks making future rail fans thinking the fleet was all made up of odd mismatched cars. Unless a one-off had some significant historical story attached to it or it was a major step change in new technology, they should be let go. I believe Sydney Trains has nominated a set of cars that reflect each major subtype of the class and be an accurate representation of the fleet to be transferred to heritage for preservation.
@@MatthewGeier I think so far the list is C3805, T4150 (these were retired back in 2012-2013 when the A sets came into service), possibly C3861 (maybe?), C3912 and C3986 (at least one of these or both), C3765, C3001, D4002, T4101, T4921-T4962 range car, T4968 or T4983. It seems strange they are just destroyed like that, all the bits would be all mixed together with broken glass etc, why weren't they just pulled apart and the bits recycled that way, the reverse way they were put together.
The grass hill shown at the beginning of the video with the apartments and the old DickSmith warehouse in the background is actually an old WW2 bunker. Built to store armaments that the railway factory was producing.
Cant remember if i already put a comment but sadly missed s sets, some preserved of course but many memories, took me on the first eastern suburb railway services when i was 5 years old in 1979, i wonder if the original windows were still around to refit a preserved set.
