Hi Luke, great review. As someone who hasn't tried Detective yet (but been tempted), this does sound like a perfect package to jump into. I think it#s great to introduce some streamlining and non-linked stories as a way to get new players to join. Also glad you gave One Pip Wonder a shout out. I didn't know the channel and it seems like a fun one. You should consider adding a link to the channel in the video description. Technical side question: were you experimenting with exposure and colour grading during the video? Because parts of it looked washed out and pretty flat colour wise.
I use the same LUT effect throughout - however because the sunlight outside was being tempermental, some shots were so brightly lit I had to tone them down.

Do you think someone who did not like Chronicles of Crime very much would like this one? I play with my wife and two kids and we did not like CoC because the constant scanning got tiresome after a while. Also, I feel CoC is best with fewer people because someone always feels left out of the action. For us CoC was frustrating because it felt that it came down to scanning everything and checking it with everything else. We sometimes forgot to hit "goodbye" and ended up wasting time scanning the same things more than once, etc. In sum, we did not like the main mechanic of the game. Also, when we were stuck with no more ideas, we were frustrated there were no hints or any way to get a little help on what to do next (which many, if not all of the escape games have). How would Detective Season One compare given those concerns? (I see that you mentioned that the concern about being 4 players would be similar.) We are looking for a good detective game for us. I thought Chronicles would be it, but after a couple of cases, my wife and kids already said they don't want to play it again, at least for a while. Now I am considering Detective Season 1, 221b Baker Street or Deadline. Any thoughts?
Detective Season One might be pushing it with 4 players, HOWEVER the original Detective would possibly suit due to it being more complex - you've got plenty to consider. However my concern is how well your two kids will cope. Certainly it's less frustrating as you don't have to do any scanning, you just have the "browser", but that's no way comparable to C of C (i.e. you type in what's needed and what's said on the cards, not scanning). I've not tried those other two. Another alternative if you want to make it a big of an event also is perhaps the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective ones.
Both very different but personally I didn't latch on to City of Angels. It was a lot to process and only works when you play in the mode where one guy runs the game. Detective is much easier to get stuck into but yet still has the challenge.
i didnt even know there was an embargo on this its been at my flgs for weeks just sitting on the shelf. i think sometimes the staff dont know what they have lol
@@TheBrokenMeeple i dont really mind it was this kind of mistake that enabled me to get shadowed paths lol i think they just put whatever they get from delivery on shop floor regardless of release date lol this is also the reason ive been unable to get red skull for marvel champions
You say it is a "standalone game", but the Portal website says, "A Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game is required to play " in all bold. Which is it?

it seems like the same problems with unlock! but i dont really consider it a problem i just pass the game on to a mate when im finished

Well I got the board and id's and tokens in this box and they are part of the game so I think in this occasion Portal got it wrong.
