To make this game enjoyable, I had to scrounge up some fan-made rules that turned it into a fully cooperative game.
Christ, even Bethesda's board games need mods to fix them.

Something I thought of while watching this - with the quality and variety of components included, you could probably throw out the rules and just use it as components for a homemade Fallout RPG campaign.

This game would be ideal to salvage....to help me cry a little less inside. Right away your review was bright and optimistic...and I felt what was about to come :(.... I felt this game was going to have a special place in my heart and on my shelf. Instead I’ve extracted that part of my heart, and is now stored away on my shelf collecting the dust that this game should have for several decades. BUT Wait! Do u think that it is broken enough that it can be mistaken as something resembling a sandbox game!?! That would give me hope for a community to come together to create something that deserves those “special” letters that we all covet. And with prices surely bound to drop harder than (insert witty comment here), maybe I’ll eventually pick up a few copies, and design something special from this wasteland of a game!

I got given this as a gift and ironically the most fun I've had with it was as a single player game! The story deck is a really interesting and cool mechanic when you're the only person investigating it, and the luck factor isn't a huge deal when you aren't trying to race other players for VPs. It's like they did a decent job of porting the idea of the (Bethesda) CRPGs to a board game and then buggered it up by trying to add more players.

The production values on the game are so top-notch, it's a real shame to see that kind of attention to detail end up in a bad game design.

    • @markusschmidt9260
      @markusschmidt9260 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Simply put, the "production value" of this game is zero, because the game play is as bad and uninteresting as described by SU&SD, and a good game is a prerequisition for any "production value" of a board game. How about the "production value" of a speed boat covered in marble and gold, which does not float?
I would argue Food Chain Magnate is the better game then Rising Sun or KD:M. But both games have a higher PV. But this, because they still are good games, I like to play. Only under these circumstance, component quality is to be considered into production value. But if you ask me, if FCM or Zombicide has the higher production value, I'd most certainly would go with FCM. These guys put so much thoughts and effort into creating an unique and interesting gaming experience, that it is high to value for itself. I think, you are calling out production value and component quality as synonyms, which they are not. Publishers need to integrate good gameplay into their production prozess, otherwise their doing is void.
I occasionally read some people writing: "This game seems to be bad, but I'm backing it on KS just for the amazing minis. I can never understand, why they won't buy some GI Joe action figures instead, if that's all, what they are interesting in. They are actually cheaper and don't need to "float".

  • @DJF1984

Yeah the expectations for this game unfortunately are "crack it open and see what happens" Because, yes, it is extremely random... and unfortunately too long to boot. Gorgeous for sure. Needs some Home Brewing to make it better, but why should I have to redesign the game? Hopefully the expansion will come and fix this, however that is probably a tall order considering how much it would have to revamp to "fix".

One major perplexing game mechanic not mentioned in the review is the victory condition. I was playing, people were invested in the quests but then...I won...because the faction I sided with ...won for me I guess? The quest deck is awesome but the game rules don't even allow you to explore it.
It really feels like different parts of the game was designed by different people and loosely bought together at the end.

Same happend to our group as well. Kindof. We all played for five hours, and nobody really knew who was winning or losing. We gave up in the end, and were a bit perplexed by the experience. However, I do think that it is exciting to discover the quests and stuff, but it is impossible to relate the quests to the winning condition, which feels very odd...

Played it at Essen last year, and I can only agree with you: I have no idea why this is a competetive game, considering how much the RNG is sometimes stacked against an individual player. I think I dropped from the demo after 40 minutes, because I got crit by a Deathclaw that took 15 out of my 16hp - which might as well just have killed me, considering how hard it is to regain even a single point of health in this game. But after 40 minutes I had already seen how this gameplay concept didn't work out, or at least wasn't for me.

I've seen a lot of up and down opinions on the board game, but overall, locally, the times I have brought this out to play or my friend has, as we both own this game, it has been overall enjoyed (and we both always have a blast playing it, as major Fallout fans.). There are choices you can make, it is not quite as one dimensional as you make it sound. There are often 2-3 questions available to go out, and those can branch out in a number of different directions. You can glimpse what other players are going for and make choices based on that. The dice are fine and I like the system that implements it. The game feels like a Fallout game to me and the spirit of it and the choices you make all work in that context.
While I agree the competitive nature of the game is wonky, it's not enough to keep me from enjoying the game. I find the game plays best at 2-3 players.
For me, I love Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas. Fallout 3 is just not very good and the main storyline sucks. 4 is good as a very different permutation of Fallout. I still appreciate it, though, in a different way. As a Fallout fan, I have enjoyed every playthrough of the board game. I'm also not someone who will bring the same game over and over again, as I constantly rotate them out, so when I do play this board game, it remains fresh to me.

My friend then killed a robot to complete one of his quests but that also completed my quest thus he got my power armor and i was pissed i spent the entire game rolling bad, so i knew i would not win the game but i at least wanted to have a BA suit of power armor and a super sledge, but due to crappy game mechanics i lost every thing i worked for up untill that point, This game has potentiall but it defenetly needs some work and love to make it enjoyable.

Your comparison to Talisman made me think "Hey, maybe they should've made Fallout like Tales of Arabian Nights." I mean, makes sense, right? You wander around, stuff happens to you. Sounds like Fallout to me, especially Bethesda Fallout (and Elder Scrolls) where the main quest is usually secondary to the stuff that happens along the way.
But then I think of the people who dislike Tales of Arabian Nights and their main complaints being "Well, it's not a REAL game, it's just a Choose Your Own Adventure book, you can't WIN at it." But this Fallout game is chock full of mechanics, is competitive AND tells a story, so this should be tailor made for them, right? Apparently not.
I guess you can't please everyone...

I think the problem they had -if they were intentionally modeling Fallout on TotAN - is the same one that Agents of Smersh had: TotAN works because the randomness is sublime: it IS the game. When you try to impose order on it with other mechanics the randomness slams into the numbers and the whole thing falls to pieces. Or maybe they weren't thinking about TotAN at all and just thought: won't all this chaos be silly and fun?

This video makes me feel so vindicated.
I am an event organizer for a boardgame MeetUp group; we didn’t even finish this one, because it was so convoluted. We all decided to walk away from it.
I decided to try it again with the guy who actually owns the game, who wanted me to learn the rules for him and teach him (he’s not a serious gamer). Playing it to the end of the scenario with him was one of the most frustrating experiences I have had in recent months. Playing this game literally made me feel like I was just too dumb to understand it.

I got this game for my buddy when it was on sale a few months ago. We played for about 3 hours before I got tired and realized we were supposed to be playing to win. Then I realized I'd already won which was fine with me as it was 4AM. It was really weird to me that a game that felt like a co-op game suddenly ended with me having won without having done any more than my friend. The implementation of the victory points is absolutely horrible.
I think it's got potential though, if you just play it like Fallout. Play the game to have fun, ignore the points and the end game conditions and go exploring. The quests are really well implemented imo, as long as you ignore everything that happens after you finish them.
I'll also admit to having no idea how the monster spawns were supposed to work. I read that part of the book several times and it just sounded like whenever a monster is killed you spawn a new one except maybe not sometimes?

Thanks for clarifying in my mind what has been bothering me about this. I've played three complete games, one solo, two with three players. Every time we just crashed about 3/4 of the way through. Every time there was one person who was dominating the game while everyone else struggled to compete. Every time we felt like we were just wandering around with no real purpose or direction instead of acting with a plan or strategy.
Every time there was a winner, yet not once did we really care.

Rewatching this and suddenly dawns on me: this was a thematic testing for that awful Fallout 76. I mean, I agree with Matt that Fallout under Bethesda hasn't been particularly good, but I played the games and enjoyed them more or less despite that. But I think I finally hit the breaking point. Fallout 3 was a neat (though narratively lacking, and with some lackluster interaction choices) diversion. New Vegas was a pretty great alternative (which I quite disliked at first because it had been so incredibly buggy before extensive patches) and the series should not have stayed in Bethesda's hands, because they keep screwing up their own original IP of the Elder Scrolls by doing to it exactly what they've done to Fallout: strip it of its soul and just make a buggy first-person action romp with ever-decreasing dialog/story interaction.
And the best question here is: why is it competitive? Playing with friends as a group of interesting characters working together, perhaps each with their own personal quest, would have been the smarter and more interesting approach. But that's the sort of thing you'd expect a game designer to think of, and this was made by business people who dabble in making games simply as a means to make money.

Agree completely unfortunately - I've played this once and won. That's despite the fact that because I was so focussed on the admin involved in running the quest system, completely forgot about the agenda cards when resolving the first mission I completed, boosting the opposite faction. I then got stupidly lucky, gained 3 agenda cards for the opposite faction and ended up winning mainly thanks to those cards. The game was so fiddly to keep running, Matt's criticism about the stories being lost in favour of "points" is 100% valid and the hidden VP mechanic meant actually acting against an opponent was impossible. Such a shame, but it just needed to be "less" overall.

The thing that bugs me the most about modern fallout as a brand is how nukes and nuclear weapons have become a central memetic attraction and feature.
You'd think that if ANYONE would have a deep and profound understanding of the horror and folly of a nuclear warhead it's people living in the remnants of a literal nuclear holocaust. That they would go right back to using them is something I just cannot countenance.

If anyone is looking for a Fallout board game that is actually an RPG you can play with your friends I know of two options (Although, keep in mind they play like Dungeons and Dragons rather than the traditional board game): There is Fallout PnP, which is a free fan-made system that has a wikia page that can found with a simple google search with percentage skills like in classic Fallout with options to play as Humans, Ghouls, Super Mutants, and even intelligent talking Deathclaws from Fallout 2.
The second options is: Exodus Post Apocalyptic RPG, which was supposed to be an officially licensed Fallout tabletop RPG but the creators got the license from Interplay AFTER they already sold the rights to Fallout to Bethesda. Then Bethesda caught wind of this and gave the authors a cease and desist, as to avoid confusing customers with this RPG and Fallout 3 when it was soon to be released, but instead of abandoning the project the authors just changed the names of a lot of things to be different enough from Fallout that they couldn't get into legal trouble. This system still has player options for Humans, Ghouls, and Super Mutants. Even with all the Fallout related names and content removed or changed, it still feels like classic Fallout and I do recommended it if you can find any copies, although it might be a bit challenging because the company that made the system did go bankrupt.

Thank you for the review, I feel like I needed someone to express what I was feeling before I could admit I wasn't terribly happy with this game. I love the Fallout universe and had high expectations out of this, but I never felt like I was unrealistic with my expectations. When we play it, it certainly does feel like we're going through the motions, without providing a tremendous amount of influence on the outcome. I am hoping they fix some of the gameplay issues with the expansion, but it sounds like the expansion is just more monsters/areas/scenarios... Which is unfortunate.

Honestly, it sounds like this would be way more fun as a co-op game. I mean, it sounds like you're fighting the game itself already, so why not make it official? Would be a hell of a sight more thematic, too: you're all friends from the vault exploring the wastes together - you're each other's companions taking back the wild wastes together!
Also, I agree: having played them all, I still consider Fallout 1 and 2 the best of the series, with New Vegas being a very close 3rd (especially modded).

I got this one as a gift and, while I am certainly happy to have it in my collection, I can't help but agree with Matt. The game looks really pretty and those branching quest trees are very intriguing (if rather misused) but the game as a whole left me feeling rather cold. I think this is particularly exacerbated by the way the completely half-baked end conditions steal any excitement from the rest of the game. As soon as you feel like you are kind of cooking along and neat stuff is happening the game screeches to a halt and people just add up some points.

One thing I noticed which is weird is that the world is clearly Fallout 3 set in the capital wasteland but the characters are all from 4 which makes this feel kinda rushed. Like they didn't have enough time to implement the commonwealth from 4 so they just went ahead and used the setting from 3 but then in every way made it look like 4.

@@TheMartinChronicles The expansion 'New California' is more of the same (albeit a nice chunk of new things) with 1 co-op mission (which feels a bit gimmicky). However, most of the items are mixed up with the base game so that's a relief. The 'Atomic Bonds' expansion is the big boi though! It makes every mission into a real co-op game with some new mechanics which are not too difficult to learn. For example instead of gaining (random, sometimes) influence, the agenda cards are tossed to the side and introduces new activation cards and creates co-op objectives - AND FAST TRAVELING (GODSEND). I liked the base game with a 6/10 - and this video is a bit too harsh in my opinion (although the randomness is spot-on though!!) My SO hated the game because of it. But now with the expansions (especially Atomic Bonds) I personally up the score to a 7,5/10. Even my SO enjoys it much more now. Yes the expansion Atomic Bonds is a must - but the New California is just extra fluff without Atomic Bonds. So go all in if you want a better game or try to look at some playtroughs with it. Hope this helps ;)

Long comment but stay with me:
I have followed development of the Fallout board game since it was first officially announced. Once I finally bought it, I was so overwhelmed by the amount of cards, chips, and manuals in the box that I didn't touch it for months. I tried again a while after, but only got as far as painting the miniatures before putting everything away again. Today was my third and final time sitting down, and trying to learn how to play the board game the way it was intended.
After rewatching Geek & Sundry's video multiple times I finally thought to myself "why can't I just get the hang of this game"? Luckily I stumbled across your guys' channel and decided screw it. The game can be the foundation for the Fallout game I want, but I'm not gonna sit here and force myself to try and play it as it was intended.
Thanks for making an in-depth and honest review of the game. The board game sounds very much like the rest of the franchise: clunky, bloated, but fun if you make your own rules and don't take it too seriously.
