    It really is frustrating that the gameplay isn't better. The concept is probably one of the best ideas for a Gundam game. I really hope someone tries this concept again in the future. Although with the direction licensed anime games have been going that feels less likely...

    I loved this game. The damage to mobile suits was an awesome detail that really puts you in the action. Needing a reload during combat really adds to the pressure in a good way. That said, early missions before upgrade to existing suit stats, better pilots, more gear, newer suits can be quite hard. Replay when you've got the upgrades is very satisfying.

    • @PragmatikReviews
      @PragmatikReviews  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, I hope I eluded to that the more you play the better this game gets. Especially when you get those higher value suits. Then you can just shred!

  • @thomasmeglasson228
    @thomasmeglasson228 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I one finished a mission with no head or arms. I kicked the last enemies to death. I've seen other reviews brush off the dismemberment feature, but it really adds a lot to the game, both in making sure you've got your shield up so you aren't losing functionality of your mobile suit, and sniping enemies arms off before you go in so you don't get met with a barrage of beam fire as soon as combat starts.

    • @PragmatikReviews
      @PragmatikReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think that's a big feature of Gundam in general. Units lose arms all the time, and it's not something you see end a fight, pilots will still use what they can. But it also shows that these super machines are still just very much machines. I don't think I've seen an example better than this game.

    The PS3 gag at the intro wrecked me, haha! As a big Gundam fan, I've almost purchased this game like 5 times, but each time I'm always talked out of it by people telling me how bad it is. I know you said it's not all bad, but even just watching the captured footage for the review it looks pretty damn rough, haha. Still though, I really like the time management mechanic and using different suits and pilots. Seems like a pretty cool way of simulating how the actual war would have functioned. Great job as always man!

    The gameplay loop of this game reminds me a lot of Mechwarrior: having to manage your mechs and pilots as well as their morale, while keeping in mind that you only have so many days to prepare for a mission or take the risk and dump the mission completely even though you may need the money and supplies for repairing and upgrading your mechs (as well as keeping your pilots happy. In Mechwarrior, you have to pay your pilots a monthly salary or they'll end up quitting the job and leaving your crew).

      @PragmatikReviews i can totally relate. At first it was frustrating, especially the Zeon campaign. I will admit it did feel more lore accurate to the anime counterparts. A Zaku I and II aren't very durable, but you can really make them a threat with their boost speeds. I will say i found mixing lock-on, manual aiming, and honing your thruster skills rather efficient once you adjusted to the boost controls.

      Using the base GM in the later parts (like the assault on the naval base mission) with just a beam spray gun and come out of it with a S Rank will always feel great

    I really enjoyed it quite a bit, and played it quite often. One other reason to recommend starting on Easy level though is that you can choose advance to a higher difficulty the next play through. The game does have a NEW GAME+ feature, after all.
    In fact, with the NEW GAME+ I was able to clear all difficulty levels when playing Federation. When playing as Zeon though, I could only clear Easy, and Normal difficulty levels.

  • @kemosonicfan123lbp

    Idk how you call the lock on feature useless, it's practically invaluable for me 99% of the time, I regularly get A/S ranks in every mission on normal mode even with poor mechs just by utilizing the fact that I'm locking on and the enemy usually isn't.
    You can dodge on command while locked on the enemy, circling them, and not missing so many of your shots makes it less of a problem for you to need to resupply. The only times I've even gotten damaged in this game is when I'm forced into melee by low ammo or not paying attention.
    Finally, certain heavy weapons can be instantly fired in midair, IF you're locked onto the target, they're unsatisfying/slow when fired normally, but abusing that mechanic makes them broken.

    • @PragmatikReviews

      That is something I wish I redacted when I reviewed this. I did feel it improved it the combat, but when I was using it I think I was just getting hit left and right that I put too much of the blame on it. But hey that's what I like to see, I like when people show me that there is more to a feature than I originally realized. Totally didn't know about the mid-air fire!

    I never played this game but from what I have seen from videos like this and others is that the basic concepts were solid, in fact, a Gundam game that leans more toward the realism side would be great. As a Gundam fan, I would love to see a Gundam game that relies on tactics and movement instead of just outright firepower. (Though firepower does help)
    Having read some of the comments I would agree that making the game run better period is a great start, as well as massaging the time management/base areas, however, I have a few more to add.
    1: Instead of starting like 80% into the OYW, you start from the start of the OYW. And you only have Mass-produced garbage but as the war goes on the EFSF gets their act going, and you get access to better suits (maybe be a test pilot like Federation v. Zeon?) Maybe throw in some White Base cameos as well?
    2: The ability to reload weapons that use magazines. Mobile suits carry more than just one magazine for certain weapons. But for gameplay purposes, you'd have to balance it with weight. More ammo carried, more weight less mobility.
    3: The ability to capture the enemy suits to use for yourself. Repairs will take longer but it is another suit for you to use in a pinch, you could break the suit down to help with repairs of other captured suits.

    • @PragmatikReviews
      @PragmatikReviews  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @combatking20 Definitely some neat ideas. Now one thing this game does that feels awesome is give you some higher suits like ground gundams and stuff and once that happens you feel that shift in power. This is something I honestly wish they would give another try to.

    There are a bunch of ideas that could make this concept great.
    Step One: Use the GBO2 or Gundam Breaker 4 engine.
    Step Two: Refine the base and time management aspects.
    Step Three: Have a selection of timelines and factions that you can play through. Clearing a scenario will let you do a new game plus and allow the player to use that faction's units in other timelines.
    I think with the advent of games like Hades, there is fertile ground for a similar Gundam game.

    • @PragmatikReviews
      @PragmatikReviews  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @silvermknight I definitely like some of these ideas! The GBO2 engine would be a good choice. Base management could definitely be worked on. I don't know about timeline, but definitely different moments in UC history like using the white dingos or some of the ground fights from 08th or Zeta.

    • @silvermknight
      @silvermknight 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @PragmatikReviews I envision the base management and timeline stuff to be something more like XCOM where you just set your production/repairs and just push the time advance button. In the meantime, missions can show up, and you are tasked with taking them on.

    This was by far my most liked Gundam game followed by few Gundam games on PSP that I played. This was the first Gundam game that I found which actually represented the original anime, where losing limbs was part of the story, yes the game had issues but it was better than all other games that focused more on gameplay than being true to old Gundam anime.
    Like you I got annoyed when a lucky enemy shot would blow my head or arm off with a lucky shot, but at the same time it was the first Gundam game where I really felt like I was in a giant Mech that was heavy and hard to use while at the same time being very powerful. I remember I completed the game twice and I think second run was on hard, and there were missions that I finished with auto cannon just because I had no limbs left, and that really gave the feeling from some of the anime episodes.

    I bought this game used on a whim several years ago. I'd not heard great things about it but i figured, what harm could there be in trying it out for myself? Well, the moment I inserted the disc into my PS3, the drive suddenly made a loud grinding noise and the entire console shut itself down, after which it simply refused to turn back on again. From that day forward, Gundam Crossfire has remained in my memory as the game that killed my first PS3. I didn't get a PS3 until the slim model and the price went down and I was so happy to get this game, Dynasty Warriors Gundam and Motorstorm. I loved the other 2 and I played them, along with the sequels of those games. I was so disappointed with this game and I didn't even learn the controls and turned it off. I finally gave it another chance one day after a few years and I really like this game. Your right about the frame rate but that's the only thing I don't like about this game now. It's pretty much the closest thing we have to a Gundam simulation game. I love the fact it's in English. Reading text, when playing is very hard and it's almost impossible to read every word. That's 1 thing I hate about newer games. People complaining about the English voices, the vocabulary, and/or the repeated words said killed the English dub in some games now. I think some of the lines said in this game get annoying but I would rather have it then to have to read everything. Sadly I don't buy most Gundam Games now, because of that reason. I was so happy to see Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn come out, until I played it. I can read most of the stuff said, but then I miss 1 line and I fail the mission and I have to replay it to find out what I missed. That's 1 thing that's a deal breaker for me. A non action game is ok for subtitles but not a game where I am trying not to die or fighting a enemy. I hope English voices come back to games, even if they end up being annoying like this game. It's better than a language I don't speak. I feel bad for gamers who never get games in they're language now.

    • @PragmatikReviews
      @PragmatikReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very solid point you bring up, and something I bet is a huge problem in SD Gundam: Battle Alliance. A lot of people say that there is so much to focus on that it's hard to read what the characters are talking about. I don't usually mind English voices, and the best implementation of them is when they log the dialogue and even have an option to play back the voice. I'd love to see future games do that. Thanks for watching!

You say it doesn't help but if you've been playing trying to kill things without lock and learning how to use lock properly then I can see why you don't like the game, you have to use your vulcans to get the suyit to go in to guard and be still then use main weapon or wait till they finish a boost or get behind them when moving so you hit them.

      @@PragmatikReviews quest 64 looks charming not gonna lie, there is a great video about quest how it probably was supposed to be a much grander and more fleshed out vision! on a side note about crossfire: If we talk single player gundam games there really isn‘t one that has fore fleshed out simulation aspects like destructible body parts, weighty movement, camo for terrain types, customization, world clock and two campaigns. There are many gundam games that have a tiny bit of simulation aspects or lots of customization, but most are strictly fun action games and I miss another attempt to make something as true to life as crossfire tried to make gundam … cheers!

    My dream game would be a gundam game in the "Ace Combat" style of design. Though I'd prefer the story to be somewhat less insane and memeable. This game is the closest thing to that in the US, and I'm so frustrated it had to be a rushed PS3 launch title.
