@@JohnXDrumLessons Awesome, will do. I drummed for a long time, father too, he was drum and bugle corp type..I no longer have a kit. Live in apartment. I've always loved Bossa Nova/Samba but the double foot drum action has always been a real challenge, if the tempo is slow enough it's not too bad. But faster tempos? Whoo-eee hard.
John is an amazing tutor . I have learning disabilities which makeit difficult to progress but John has a very calming effect on me that with time and patience I could be a better drummer.
Hi John - this is a great refresher for me. Your examples are very clear and truly shows how much fun it is to play the Mozambique drum beat. Thanks for sharing this cool groove! Thomas C.
Thank you John! All your videos are so practical and clear. They have helped me so much as a player and gigging drummer. Please keep up your excellent work and great teaching!
Fantastic pattern John! Tried it long time ago but thanks to your new posts nowadays i rediscovered it! Thanks for reminding me all these great rythms!
I will order your book I like the way you break it down. Its about the feel & the groove & you got it. I broke out my Vintage 60's Rogers 20"12" 14" blue sparkle with matching snare. Thanks for the inspiration.
As. Always John is fantastic at breaking parts down and playing at low tempos. I only just picked up the sticks after 40 years so I’m finding it a bit difficultly particularly with memory. I’m a very slow learner but I find johns teaching skills just the ticket. He also gives me the confidence that you don’t have to rush things and thst drumming takes time and practice. It’s as good as having a one to one tutor! Thanks for your patience John. Cheers Chris
Chris, Thank you for your beautiful comment. The key for me was always to take it slow, one step at a time. I am happy that this approach is working for you. All the best, John X
Took me about 90 minutes but was so satisfied when I got this rhythm down. Always more work to be done, though! Thanks JohnX! Best Mozambique vid on TH-cam
Edwin Solares I’m glad you found my lesson. This is one of my favorite grooves and I’ve been playing it for years. Enjoy the journey my friend. God bless, John X
JohnX Drum Lessons what material of yours do you suggest to learn Jazz/Afro Cuban grooves? I've watched most of your videos and leaned how to play quite a bit of it. Thanks!
Andrew, I don't have any other jazz/Afro-Cuban videos at the moment. I do however, have a couple in mind for future videos. Thank you for watching. John X
Yes it does. The ride pattern is slightly different and the rim clicks land on the ands of 2 instead of the 2. It's nice to have access to both patterns.
I remember my i once studied this groove with my teacher, but i usually play anything from Rock, Pop, Metal to Funk. So i basically never used it. So one day i went back to play the groove and it seriously was the hardest thing ever. Latin is defenitely one of the harder styles to feel for me. Maybe not the most technical, but it's hard to feel if you are used to popular music.
I'm glad you are getting back to Latin styles and I hope my video was helpful. Latin grooves can be very challenging at first. However, for every one you master, it makes it easier to learn the next. God bless, John X
Break the pattern down into small steps. Play to and and of 2. Groove on that small piece until it becomes second nature. Then play to the 3. Once again, groove on that small piece until it becomes second nature. Go to the and of 3, then the 4, then the and of 4. Do this for both measures, and before you know it, you'll be playing the full pattern.
Tony, you are very welcome. I hope you enjoy playing this groove. It is one of my all-time favorites. Check out my Steve Gadd Funk Mozambique lesson: th-cam.com/video/dsxT9ut9Hyw/w-d-xo.html I think you will enjoy playing this version of the Mozambique. All the best, JohnX
The Mozambique is another Afro Cuban pattern. The first person I heard play it was Steve Gadd. Check out my "Funk Mozambique" video to see another approach to playing the pattern.
I can't think of any recordings that utilize this pacific groove. However, I use it for the Latin sections of songs like 'On Green Dolphin Street' and 'Nica's Dream'. God bless, John X
Tony, That song is the Mozambique play-along track from my "Style Studies for the Creative Drummer". www.johnxdrums.com/Pages/books.html All the best, John X
In this style of music the right pattern does not change. however, the sound source does. The right hand could play on a cymbal, the bell of the cymbal, a cowbell or the rim of the drum.
John you seem to be a no nonsense kind of drummer/teacher. I've been in and out of drums for over 40 years but now more interested in the Latin styles. They seem to be more expressive with a unique grove. Also getting interested in micing and recording. Do you have any advice as far as mics go?
Hello John! The play alongs in your book are actually music, right? Sorry for the question but i just bought some play alongs from a jazz professor here on youtube. His play alongs were just recorded metronome click sound with his voice making "ha" after every 32 bars to learn jazz form.
