In the second part of my lecture series on the French Revolution, I discuss the meeting of the Estates General in 1789. If you missed part one, check it out:
    • The French Revolution ...
After the Assembly of Notables failed to come to an agreement about a solution to solve the French monarchy's financial crisis, Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates General in 1789. The Estates General was an advisory body for the king that had not met in nearly two hundred years. The delegates elected from the Third Estate (primarily from the bourgeoisie, or French professional class) were unsatisfied with the method of counting votes, in which each of the three estates voted as a group. The Third Estate delegates suggested "doubling the third" and voting by head to create a single assembly more representative of the French people. Louis agreed to allow the Third Estate twice as many delegates, but he did not allow voting by head, which essentially kept the status quo.
I also discuss Abbe Sieyes' famous pamphlet, "What is the Third Estate?" Sieyes explains how the Third Estate is almost exclusively responsible for driving the French economy. In the beginning of his pamphlet, he asks,
"What is the Third Estate? EVERYTHING.
What has it been until now in the political order? NOTHING.
What does it wish to become? SOMETHING."
After an awkward beginning of the Estates General (the "Hat Fiasco" set the tone), the Third Estate delegates left to form the National Assembly. The next segment of this lecture will discuss the National Assembly, its struggles, and its legislation.
This lecture is intended primarily for AP European History students, but is suitable for high school and college courses in Western Civilization and World History, as well.

Thank you so much Tom for this great series of videos on the French Revolution. So far, I've watched seven of them and I'm now watching this video for the second time whilst taking notes. I'm an adult learner doing evening classes on this subject, just to further my knowledge of French cultural heritage, not for any exams (you school kids probably think I'm crazy!). Your videos have really brought the subject to life. By the way, I can speak French to quite a high standard (C1) and, believe me, it really doesn't matter - in the context of history lectures - how bad your French pronunciation is! 😃Best wishes.

Holy shit, I've read a few pages of the communist manifesto, pretty spooky stuff. Yet since reading that, I've spent the rest of my time struggling to say bourgeoisie, (even though everyone else is saying it right), and when you said "everyone will look at you funny", they have I swear they have!
Nevertheless, It might've been my Australian accent finding it hard to speak such an obscure french word. Most of the French words in English ain't so long. Yet with this new knowledge I am born again, today, a new person. Thank you Tom Richey, I learnt something that will help me in day to day life.

Below is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Anything comparable would simply not have been possible for most people 20 years ago, and probably not even 10 years ago. Kudos to the content providers!

Hmmm so your telling me that people get mad when one option gets more votes than the other but the other option still wins because the votes it got have more power... *cough Electoral cough College cough*

XxMega tronxX comparing the EC to the French Revolution? We live in a republic not a democracy. Take out California and trump wins by over 1 million votes. There's a reason the electoral college is in place, and it's because it works and has withstood the test of time. If it was the other way around, and Hillary won EC but not the popular vote all liberals would be praising the system, but the difference is conservatives wouldn't be whining. Don't be a partisan hack

Why is this man speaking is a Southern drawl? Whatever happened to standard and intelligible English? On a completely different note: Why does one have to hold a cup in one's hand while speaking about the Estates General? Seriously....
