Great lesson as I prepare to prune my newly planted Beauty plum tree! It sure wants to grow vertically; I will try tying down some of the branches to see if I can get it to spread out. (No deer where I am in SoCal-just bunnies, ground squirrels, rats, mice and birds to contend with! 😉 I have a multi grafted pear to prune too, and I think I will prune it to an open center too, despite that not being standard for apples and pears. I saw a video that suggested to always do that with multi-grafted trees, so that no one variety will outcompete all the rest as a “central leader.”

I'm starting to prune myself these days, have about 80 - 90 plums (40 of which are small yet) and about 15 apples. Thinking to put some pears, too. Can i ask where are you from cause it's strange to see you just in your t-shirt pruning. In Croatia is quite cold so we are stil in our winter jackets most of the time. I'm in Alabama. Yes, we are in the 80's around here.We purchased our varieties at Auburn University, a nearby college. Their agriculture program is awesome. They create varieties that can handle our weather. Good luck to you too!
